I was preaching in London's Hyde park and the place was packed with Sisters of Mercy nuns in their distinctive white habits. A little Chinese girl saw my bible and thinking I was one of that crowd came running over all breathless and blurted "oh I wish I could wear a white robe and have a pure heart." I cried inwardly to the Lord to give me wisdom to speak to this young lady, she was about 17 years old and very pretty.
I said "well you can wear a white robe but it'd still be you, you would have a white robe on" her face fell and she looked very sad, she admitted it was true. "But" I continued "you can have a pure heart today before you leave this park"
She didn't look very sure about that so I showed her my bible "look Peter said ... "Himself bare our sins in His own body on the tree that we being dead unto sin might live unto righteousness"
She grabbed my poor bible and glared fiercely down at the scripture I had pointed to as if demanding it to explain itself, "it says He bore your sins ... you'd have a pure heart wouldn't you?"
Suddenly her face took on an agonised expression as she struggled in her mind to understand this thing.
I pointed dramatically to a nearby tree and cried "LOOK! there He is, hanging by nails, He's bearing your sins" there was a sharp intake of breath and her hand went to her mouth as the truth dawned upon her.
I said " do you believe if we prayed together here in the park God will hear our prayer?" she did believe and she bowed low from the waist to pray reverently. She thanked God that Jesus would come to save her, that He would take all her sins away on the cross. She asked Him that He would come into her heart and impart new life to her and be her Lord.
Suddenly I looked on in wonder as her whole being was lifted up and her face lit up in a radiant smile of joy as she was born again. Then she ran off into the crowd. I thought "Lord that's odd, I know she was saved but she ran off" I had so many things to say to her.
I carried on preaching. About 15 minutes later I saw her again she was herding 4 great big tall youths towards me looking very bemused. "please" she begged "tell them, explain to them what you explained to me"
It happened that their tour guide was urgently gathering up her party to board the bus but as she was being pulled away I managed to get into her hands some literature and addresses and told her that she must be the one to explain to them what had happened to her. Praise the Lord. She reminded me of the woman of Samaria who ran off to her village to tell everyone about Jesus.
