Twisted Family History

This is a bit of twisted family history and tells a story about what can happen when we delve into our family roots and end up uncovering things that we would rather we hadn’t.

The Taylor’s were very proud of their family history.

Their ancestors had traveled to America with the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower.

They had included Congressmen, successful entrepreneurs, famous sports people and television stars.

They decided to research and write a family history, something that they could hand down to their children and grandchildren.

Having found a specialist genealogist and writer to help them, they were amazed at the family information that she managed to unearth.

However, a problem arose – how to handle Great Uncle Jefferson Taylor who was executed in the electric chair.

The writer said she could handle the story tactfully.

When the family history book was completed, the section about Jefferson read as follows:

Great Uncle Jefferson Taylor occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution, he was attached to his position by the strongest of ties, and his death came as a great shock.

A Story of the Soldier and a Spider
Posted on June 2, 2014

Photo Credit: Petra via CC Flickr
During World War II, a US Marine was separated from his unit on a Pacific island. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and the crossfire, he had lost touch with his comrades.
Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed. As he waited, he prayed, “Lord, if it is your will, please protect me. Whatever your will though, I love you and trust you. Amen.”
After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close. He thought, “Well, I guess the Lord isn’t going to help me out of this one.”
Just then he saw a spider begin to build a web over the front of his cave. As he watched, listening to the enemy searching for him all the while, the spider layered strand after strand of web across the opening of the cave.
“Hah” he thought, “what I need is a brick wall and what the Lord has sent me is a spider web. God does have a sense of humor.”
As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hideout and could see them searching one cave after another. As they came to him, he got ready to make his last stand. To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they moved on.
Suddenly, he realized that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered it for quite a while.
“Lord, forgive me,” prayed the young man, “I had forgotten that in you a spider’s web is stronger than a brick wall.”
We all face times of great trouble. When we do, it is so easy to forget the victories that God would work in our lives, sometimes in the most surprising ways.
As the great leader, Nehemiah, reminded the people of Israel when they faced the task of rebuilding Jerusalem, “In God we will have success!” [Nehemiah 2:20]
Remember: Whatever is happening in your life, with God, a mere spider’s web can become a brick wall of protection. Trust and believe that He is with you always. Just ask for his help and you will see His great power and love for you.

The Florist And The Barber

One day, a florist goes to a barber for a haircut.

After the cut, he asked about his bill and the barber replies, “I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.”

The florist was really pleased and left the shop.

When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a thank you card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later that day, a cop comes in for a haircut. When he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, “I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.”

The cop is happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a thank you card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, “I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.”

The professor is very happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a thank you card and a dozen different books, such as ‘How to Improve Your Business’ and ‘Becoming More Successful.

Then, a Congressman comes in for a haircut. When he goes to pay his bill the barber again replies, “I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.”

The Congressman is very happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the members of our Congress.

https://www.thelaughline.com/the-florist-and-the-barber/

Great one! Reminds me of the one about the Congressman who got mad in the public bathroom. Someone had taped a note to the hot air hand dryer: "Press button for a message from your Congressman"

So firstly, I’d like to say thanks @GaryA for the thought behind this thread. It doesn’t look like it’s taken off like I think you must have hoped, but I came across it this morning and one of the stories really spoke to me, so thank you.

Just now I was reminded of a story of my own, and in appreciation, I thought I’d contribute it. It's not something you'll find on the internet until I post it, but hopefully it will meet someone like I was met this morning (several time zones ahead of most of you, so good mornin’ to y’all :))

Once upon a time I was taking care of some admin and it required my identification. The closest thing at hand was my driver’s license, so I pulled it out, did what I needed to do and placed it back in my wallet – or so I thought. I continued on my errands, which took me to two different grocery stores and merrily headed home.

Several hours later I was going through my bag; when I looked through my wallet, to my surprise, my driver’s license was no longer there! I calmly searched through my bag, and no… it wasn’t there either. Tempted to panic, I decided instead to keep my composure and search my car before spinning into a panic. (I don’t know what it’s like losing official documents over there in the States, but let me tell you, it’s a process you never want to have to go through here in Africa!)

Still nothing. Trying to maintain a level head before giving into that hopeless panic one feels in a situation like that, I knew the only thing to do was to re-trace my steps and inquire at all the shops I visited that morning. Lucky for me, it was a small country town, so chances of something like that being picked up and handed in are pretty high. I proceeded from one store to another and still nothing… Still, I had not given up hope. I knew the Lord would help me find it, and had been praying He would the entire time. This is what kept me from giving in to the panic.

So, the next day, the search continued. I repeated the re-trace of steps in the hope that maybe someone would have found it and handed it in. Still nothing.

I’m sure many of you will be able identify with how, when you lose something important, there’s a compulsive reaction of checking the place where it SHOULD be over and over again even though you know it’s not there! I must have opened and closed my wallet a hundred times a day after I realized my license was missing.

Three weeks went by of hunting high and low – and opening and closing my wallet probably a thousand times by now – and frequenting those same grocery stores when I finally had to admit defeat. I decided I would take the 120km trip to the Government Offices and get it replaced the following week.

That particular day when I made the decision, I was standing in the queue in that very same Grocery Store that I was pretty convinced I had lost my driver’s license. It was hot and I was at the back of a long queue. (what can I say? No aircon!) To kill some time, I remembered that my Pastor sent a video clip to each of us in the congregation and I hadn’t watch it yet. That Sunday he had preached on how God sometimes uses angels to meet our needs in unexpected ways. The clip was of a surveillance camera somewhere in the world of a guy on a motorbike who was about to be hit by a truck. Miraculously, he was found on the other side of the truck totally unscathed. When they slowed down the surveillance camera, they saw this “mysterious being” suddenly appear and transport the gentleman to the other side of the truck in an instant. In the footage, you see the angel casually walking way with his hands aglow from the action that had just taken place. Really inspiring clip.

By this time I was nearly at the front when I felt this warm presence touch me on my thigh! I caught such a fright that I immediately turned around to see who would be obnoxious enough to put their hand where it did not belong! Strange - no one was there, not even close. But the presence was tangible. A little shaken, I checked my bag and then mindlessly and compulsively pulled out my wallet to check for the thousand and first time for a license that wasn’t there.

GUESS WHAT?! When I opened my wallet, right there where I always kept it, my gold disk had miraculously appeared!! Think what you will, but that day an angel brushed past me and placed my driver’s license back into my wallet.

.............

I don’t use that particular wallet anymore, but I came across it a little earlier and recalled this incident. It changed my life that day to know just how much God cares about even the seemingly insignificant details of our lives – that He would save me the full day of sweaty queues (and lots of stress) by lovingly sending an angel to restore my license to me as a testimony of His goodness.

Maybe you’re in a place like me, feeling hopeless and despondent, wondering if God even knows your name, let alone your location. Let me encourage you as I was encouraged today and say He knows even the hairs on your head, and He will take care of every detail of your life. Just wait and trust and He will meet you. In the right time.

If I were to give this story a title today, I would call it EBENEZER as a reminder to each one of us, and say THUS FAR the Lord has helped us.

I have a similar story too.
I had finished work and stopped at the petrol station before I made my half an hour journey home. I put the petrol in, grabbed my purse and looked for my card. No card. I rummaged through my purse hoping frantically that I had some cash. No cash. I thought "Oh no, what am I going to do" and went into panic o_Oo_Oo_O
I walked into the store and pretended to look around at the drinks and chocolates trying to come up with something to say to the cashier. I think I said in my head "Lord help" or something like that.
Suddenly I heard "look in your purse" so I did. Nothing. Then I noticed a card of an old account that I had completely forgotten about. It had hardly any amount of money in it and I had not transacted on it in years. In fact I couldn't even recall the pin number. I was just about to say "Lord I don't know the pin number" when I heard three numbers. I wondered if that was the pin number. It didn't sound familiar. I did another lap of the shop and decided I would give that card and pin a go and see what happens.
I approached the cashier, swiped my card, typed the pin number and IT WORKED!!!!!! I was so excited  and the cashier thought I was a fruitcake . I drove home laughing all the way thanking God that he even knows our pin numbers

Thats really awesome, Ruby!! It's so encouraging to be reminded of "the little things" that aren't so little... the same God that causes the sun to rise opens the tiny flower that comes with it... He is so intricately involved in our lives... like it says in Acts - He gives us LIFE and BREATH and ALL THINGS... yet we get so blinded and bogged down that we lose sight of our Father's daily provision.
If He cares enough to take care of the little things, I can come to peace knowing He will take care of the bigger picture too 🙂

Thanks for sharing!!

I am just amazed that he talks to me. I am always questioning whether it is him or not because I guess I feel unworthy but I am reminded that because of Jesus our relationship with God is restored. We too can go back to the time of Adam and Eve when God walked and talked with them.

Thought provoking stories. To all you kids out there that have been taught to hate your skin color and America - here's a story for you:

There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?"

A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?"

You could have heard a pin drop.

We overcomplicate things. keep it simple, it is refreshing. Too many people have so much head knowledge and have no relationship.

Canadian lumber camp placed an advertisement for a lumberjack.

A skinny little guy showed up at the camp the next day, carrying an axe.

The head lumberjack took one look at the skinny little guy, who appeared to have practically no muscles and told him to get lost.

“Give me a chance to show you what I can do”, the skinny guy said.

“Okay”, the head lumberjack said, “Do you see that giant redwood over there? Take your axe and cut it down”.

The guy headed for the tree, while the head lumberjack went in their cabin to make himself a coffee to pass the time.

Well, five minutes later, the skinny guy is knocking on the lumberjack’s cabin door.

“I cut the tree down”, the skinny guy said.

The head lumberjack couldn’t believe his eyes when he say the huge tree just lying on thr ground.

He says to the skinny guy, “Where did you learn to chop down trees like that?”

“In the Sahara Forest”, the skinny man said.

“The Sahara Forest? Don’t you mean the Sahara Desert”, the head lumberjack asked.

“Well sure”, the skinny guy replied, “That’s what they call it now!”

A small town women lived alone and every day would tend to her magnificent garden which beauty could not be contested, however life had not been kind to her and she was feeling especially down today as her tears fed her flowers.
Every day she would come to her garden and her salty tears would fall into the earth she was a believing Christian but was now angry with God for letting life treat her as it has.
She had been to church that sunday morning and the sermon was about how precious and cherished and beautiful they were to him this dug into her heart like knife because she was bitter from all of the pain from life. She went to her garden after church in her tears once more and cried out in anger if I am so precious and beautiful to you why have let me suffer so much?

The wind stirred and a voice spoke to her saying look at your garden and all it's splendor the soil is rich and soft for planting but it took a lot of hard work to get it that way did it not? Look at your flowers and how vibrant they are but it took a lot of tender care to make it this way did it not? Now look at your life it is like the soil rich and ripe for planting but it took a lot of work for me to make it this way for you and took many days of hardship to soften your heart for planting. But you are my radiant flower which I have taken tender care of and allowed all this hardship so that your soil will be rich with nutrients and good for your growth

In the same way you prune and tend to your garden I have pruned and tended to you my most radiant flower in which I hold my pride. The women was again in tears but for a different reason this time she was at peace and felt his hand in the wind stoke the side of her face as she smiled with eyes as tender as a flower
