Hello!
I'm new here (so hello everyone!)
I'm wondering your views on modesty. I am a teenage girl (enough said ). Seriously though, I am fairly new to religion, and don't want to make any huge mistakes, but I am also aware of how it is actually quite difficult to be a devoted Christian in this day and age.

Soooo...
That being said, how far should modesty go? Is it bad to wear shorts, or certain dresses? And where do tight leggings go in all this?

Hope this makes sense and any advice is always appreciated! :)

Hello Niamh04 :) I think shorts are fine as long as they are not overly short.

Same with dresses, with the added caveat of them not being too low cut.

I like wearing leggings with a long top that goes down past my hips.

A tunic or dress/skirt over leggings, or pants (I don't wear jeans) is nice, too :)

Hey Magenta!
That is super helpful- thanks so much for clarifying! I wasn't sure where people stood on this one, so wanted to check just to be safe!

Also didn't want to be unnecessarily channeling Maria from the Sound of Music vibes , so thank you for clarifying :)

This may not be your style... but, you can dress modestly and still be stylish and cute :D

Also, an assortment of scarves are wonderful accessories :D

Not necessarily like the scarf in the 2nd photo ;)

PS~ I am too old for cute any more :giggle:

But I still like to look nice (or at least presentable) while in public (y)

Do you shop second hand at all?

Even if you are a bit squeamish about wearing clothes somebody else has worn,
second hand stores do sometimes have brand new clothes at greatly reduced prices.

Here we have quite a few places that carry "recycled" clothing, and when I was wanting
something new for me, I would usually go to either Value Village or the Salvation Army.

Because new clothes are often quite expensive, even when they are on sale.

Going to a place Like Value Village means you can often get three, four,
or more recycled items of clothing for the price of one brand new piece.

If you are not averse to that, keep an eye out for stains and signs
of excessive wear such as pilling, or frayed cuffs and hems, etc. ;)

They even carry shoes and boots :D And lots of scarves (y)

To tell you the truth, most of my clothes are second hand- so much better for the environment (and my bank account )

I do need to keep an eye out, can't wait until they open again here! Funny how much I've learnt here about religion and all, but also second hand shopping ;)

Can't wait to accessorise with plenty of scarves!

Scarves are great because you can wear them loose or tie them in some fancy bow,
or even wear them around your head or waist... plus, they add a bit of flair as well as
more pattern and color, which can be quite complementary if you go for more solid
tops, blouses, jackets, sweaters or hoodies, which I tend to do :) They are very versatile :D

(I usually just wear mine hanging down from around my neck ;))

This has been my style for years...long tunics/dresses/shirts over leggings. For the summer I wear tights which come up to the knee. I think the floral design is too cutesy as one is getting older, but the bottom design I think one can wear until much older.

As we prepare our daughter for her teens, I want her to ask herself when choosing clothes. What am I trying to portray? What kind of attention am I seeking? And will this choice bring me or my relationships closer to God? We have nothing wrong with her dressing cute but many clothes today are designed with the cultural mindset of sexual appeal. You can read through almost any teen magazine and see where the culture is guiding our teens. I want my daughter to dress in such a way that promotes a balance of image and personality. An image that represents her as a child of God who is being sanctified in holiness.

In the Bible, God speaks poorly of the false gods of fertility and of the prostitutes. Which tells us at least one thing to consider on the dress code. If the female is dressing in such a way that attracts sex then they are missing God's will.

This also doesn't mean we need the extreme like Muslim women who are all covered up in public.

Modesty can go further than clothes. It can be speech or behavior.

Modesty in speech can be a calm but stern voice who has control over her tongue.

Modesty in behavior can be simply following the Word of God in how to love others, how to serve, how to grow, learn, the practice of being humble, seeking joy, purity of both mind, body, and soul.

This is such an inspiring answer!

I totally get you with the clothes designed just for sex appeal, I used to just think that was the normal way of dressing, but then after my encounter with God, I began to question this, and just don't feel comfortable now wearing that style after learning more about Christianity.

I absolutely love that modesty can be spoken too, I used to be so impulsive, and so really need to work on that!

That is such helpful advice, so thank you so much for your reply!

My little girl loves princesses which do hold themselves to a state of modesty. As children of God this essentially has grafted us into the bloodline of royalty. Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords. This adoption was bought with His blood and of new birth we can call God our Abba or Father.

An earthly example is the idea of how a princess is to uphold herself in representation to the crown she can receive. The crown of life will be everlasting.

I almost always shop second hand, and I also found it hard to dress modestly. Eventually I decided to stick to skirts and dresses which come up to my knees. That might sound super old-fashioned, but you can wear things that are sooo cute and trendy, and still are modest and honour God. Why don’t you give it a try? Have fun shopping!

Honestly, this has been something on my mind as well.
My parents never allowed me to wear dresses/skirts that were short...like above the knee in public. If I were to wear one...I had to wear it with a legging. It was annoying for me...coz I preferred to wear dresses that were short and didn't understand why they were so strict about it. But, eventually I understood why certain clothes aren't suitable as a Christian.

Though, I see a lot of Christian girls who wear stuff like crop tops and shorts. And there's nothing wrong with that. As long as you're respecting yourself😊 I love wearing shorts and crop tops but sometimes it depends when you're going out and whom you're gonna be with. I'm still not allowed to show off too much skin😅 even if I 18...and it's annoying...coz I feel myself when I wear certain clothes and other clothes that are bit too old fashioned I feel restricted.

Anywayyyy, this isn't about me.
In conclusion, generally, wear appropriately of course. And something that makes you feel comfortable and respected. Dress like a daughter of a King, if I can say that.

I was just out of my teenage years I remember in high school my friend of mine said to me don’t dress modestly wear a crop top to school but I don’t my advice is that let your daughter defend her faith and show the girls that modestly is cool I mean in a nice possible way but If you need any help or advice from a former teen.

I hear from my nephews, who are teens, and the kids their age are a lot wilder than when I went to school, which doesn't seem that long ago as I graduated in 2010. But yes, I suppose I am getting old now. I just hit 30 and need an excellent mid-life crisis, possibly buy a boat lol. The point is, I never imagined how fast the culture changed just within 11 years. These teens now seem to have no boundaries. I volunteer with our church youth group, so I am hoping that will help me connect with my daughter once she hits that age. She is six now.

Boy did I have a crush on Taylor Swift in High School. But she broke my heart when she started supporting abortion, lgbt, and and wanted to vote for Hillar Clinton. Oh well, I met the perfect women in high school and now married, so unfortunate that she let her career take her so far from God's Word.
