Exodus 20:12


Honoring our parents is one of the ten commandments, dictated by God. Exodus 20:12

Jesus in Luke 14:26 tells us to hate our parents if we want to be with him.

How many of we Christians hate our parents, siblings, or children? I love God however I also love my family and feel uncomfortable being told its either or.
First time reading this requirement and actually paying attention to what I'm reading.

Anyone care to share that they hate their parents, siblings, or children?
Anyone care to comment anything,
Personally I'm not sure what to think at this point, just ..reading and thinking about what I'm reading.

Reading Luke 14:26, Jesus also mentions "and his own life also". Do you really believe Jesus was telling us we need to hate ourselves ... our close family members? I do not believe this is the case.

Here is what HELPS Word-studies tells us about the word "hate" in Luke 14:26 (bold mine):

3404 miséō – properly, to detest (on a comparative basis); hence, denounce; to love someone or something less than someone (something) else, i.e. to renounce one choice in favor of another.​

Lk 14:26: "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate (3404/miséō, 'love less' than the Lord) his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple" (NASU).​


The point is that we must love Jesus whole heartedly. We love Him more than father, more than mother, more than spouse, more than children, more than brothers and sisters, more than self.

most atheists use this text to discredit the words of Jesus. Always take it out of context.

The good thing is Luke 14:26 is not all Jesus said before to after. In addition Matthew chapter 10:34-39 is parallel to Luke 14.

If read both in context Jesus is saying the love one has for God will be as hate to those in their own family or even seen as hate. Jesus goes on to say to be a disciple of Christ has cost. You must deny yourself and endure the suffering that comes with accepting Jesus as the Messiah. It was not popular to be a Christian in this day of Peter and Paul.

It's good to look at the surrounding text for a clear understanding of verses which seems contradictory, such as,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Lk.2:14

With,

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. Mt.10:34

Of course our Lord wants us to love our parents and children and enemies, but not at the expense of leaving him.

We know that all scripture comes from one God with one eternal doctrine. We know that no scripture disagrees with another scripture. We also know the attributes of the eternal God that inspires all scripture so no scripture can be from a different God. These things must be acknowledged as we read scripture.

Reading these scriptures that on the surface disagrees with the other are test scriptures to test our ability to read scripture correctly. When we correctly read these verses, we find it is about what our priorities are to be, not about hating our parents.

Key word is your own life. So that list of family, it's not about hating them as we are commanded to love people, but hate worldly-ness. Hate their lives and our lives, the sinful mess of our lives that will end in our mortal bodies death.
