When we examine the spiritual gifts (gifts of the Holy Spirit) to believers for the edification of the Church we find that there are two broad categories: (1) the temporary gifts and (2) the permanent gifts.

The gifts of apostles and prophets were limited to the Apostolic Age. The sign gifts are called “signs, wonders, and miracles” and were also limited to the apostles and their companions. The gift of tongues was also a sign gift (for Jews), and we are told that prophecies, tongues, and knowledge (supernatural) would cease (1 Cor 13:8-10).

In searching the New Testament, we will find spiritual gifts discussed in (a) Mark 16, (b) 1 Corinthians 12-14, (c) Romans 12, and (d) Ephesians 4. And all of these should be taken into account before the sign gifts are separated out. Those who insist that the sign gifts listed in the New Testament are still in effect seem to (1) forget all about the other gifts and (2) imagine that Cessationists believe that all spiritual gifts ceased. The truth is that the majority of spiritual gifts have remained, but are never discussed or emphasized. As a result, Christians are not consciously exercising all their gifts.

The gifts which have never ceased are as follows:
1. Casting out of demons
2. Words of wisdom
3. Words of knowledge
4. Faith
5. Discerning of spirits
6. Helps
7. Governments
8. Ministry
9. Exhortation
10. Liberality
11. Mercy
10. Evangelists
11. Pastors
12. Teachers

What should be noted is that EVERY GENUINE CHRISTIAN MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE OF THESE GIFTS: But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Cor 12:7)

As we can see, if all these gifts were being exercised, every church would flourish spiritually. But if no one brings these gifts into focus, then all that people can think about is tongues and healing.

John Gill provides insight into the meaning of some of these gifts in his commentary:

The word of wisdom: by which is meant "the manifold wisdom of God"; the wonderful scheme of salvation through the incarnation, sufferings, and death of Christ, in which God has "abounded in all wisdom and prudence"; together with all other deep, mysterious, and sublime doctrines of the Gospel, the knowledge of which were peculiarly given to the apostles in the first place, who have the first office or ministry in the church, by "the spirit of wisdom"; and which they had a faculty, a gift of declaring, opening, and explaining unto others [and which continues in some Christians].

To another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit: meaning either knowledge of future events; or an universal knowledge of the Scriptures of truth, and the doctrines contained in them, of the whole mind and will of God therein, which is a distinct thing from saving grace.

To another faith by the same Spirit: Not the grace of faith, which is common to all believers, though given by the same Spirit: but rather the doctrine of faith, and ability to preach it, and boldness and intrepidity of spirit to assert and defend it in the face of all opposition. [also extraordinary faith which is present in some believers]

To another discerning of spirits: by which gift such that were possessed of it could, in some measure, discern the hearts of men, their thoughts, purposes, and designs, their secret dissimulation and hypocrisy... by which also they could distinguish the Spirit of God from the lying spirits in men [including evil spirits speaking through men]

Or ministry, let us wait on our ministry: The word sometimes signifies the whole ecclesiastical ministry, even the office of apostleship, as well as the ordinary ministration of the Gospel; seeA cts 1:17; but here "deaconship", or the office of ministering to the poor saints, as in Acts 6:1, being a distinct office from prophesying: or preaching the word, and should be used, exercised, and attended to with diligence, care, and constancy; for such who are appointed to this office, are chosen not only to a place of honour, but of service and business, in which they should behave with prudence, sobriety, and humility.

Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: This is the other branch of prophesying or preaching, and which is more practical, and lies in giving a word of exhortation to the saints, as their particular cases call for; for as prophets were teachers, Acts 13:1; so also exhorters, Acts 15:32; and one considerable branch of the ministry, and which is more principally the pastor's work, as well as to teach, is to exhort all sorts of persons, young and old, rich and poor, high and low, bond and free, under his care, with all longsuffering and doctrine. The words will bear to be read [may also be read thus], "he that comforteth, on consolation"; and so the Syriac version renders them, "and another who is a comforter, in his consolation".

While Paul lists the spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12, he focuses on tongues and their abuse (and proper use) in chapter 14. Chapter 13 is all about the greatest spiritual gift which is agape love (called “charity” in the King James Bible). What does Paul teach in the 14th chapter of 1 Corinthians?

1. The gift of prophecy is pre-eminent for edification.
2. The gift of tongues is the least of the gifts (since 5 words of prophecy are greater than 10,000 words in tongues).
3. Tongues were a sign to unbelieving Jews, as prophesied by Isaiah.
4. There must be an interpreter (or interpretation) for tongues to be spoken in the church.
5. Only two or three may speak in tongues within a church meeting.
6. Women may not speak in tongues within a church meeting.

No, speaking in tongues wasnt just a sign for (Jews) the scripture below was written to the church in (Corinth, Greece) gentiles, your claim is false

I received the gift 43 years ago, and it's the very same today

It appears your bound by the false teachings in the Baptist denomination, that all sign gifts died with the apostles, (False)

1 Corinthians 14:22KJV
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

The sign gifts are called “signs, wonders, and miracles” and were also limited to the apostles and their companions.
There is no scriptural evidence to support this. On the contrary, Mark states, "These signs shall follow them that believe..." which is all Christians.

The gift of tongues was also a sign gift (for Jews)
That application is not exclusive. Nowhere does Paul suggest that tongues are only for a sign for the Jews. Chapter 14 clearly gives space for other applications.

and we are told that prophecies, tongues, and knowledge (supernatural) would cease (1 Cor 13:8-10).
Would cease, not have ceased. That distinction is important, and glossing over it is either biased or irresponsible.

Those who insist that the sign gifts listed in the New Testament are still in effect seem to (1) forget all about the other gifts
In my experience, it's the cessationists who make all the noise about gifts ceasing, and make all the fuss about tongues. Your statement is unvarnished and unwarranted blame-casting.

What should be noted is that EVERY GENUINE CHRISTIAN MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE OF THESE GIFTS: But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Cor 12:7)
Scripture doesn't say anywhere that "every genuine Christian must have least one of the gifts". "Must" means something quite different than "is given".

As we can see, if all these gifts were being exercised, every church would flourish spiritually.
That's an argument from silence.

But if no one brings these gifts into focus, then all that people can think about is tongues and healing.
Again, that's not the fault of the continuationists.

John Gill provides insight into the meaning of some of these gifts in his commentary:
From these descriptions, I can only conclude that Gill was either a broad cessationist or had no actual experience with many of the gifts. His descriptions fall in line with calling modern preaching "prophesying"... which it isn't.

The word of wisdom is not merely preaching the gospel, which any learned Christian can do. Rather, it is a message of insight into a particular situation: a "word" of direction, correction, or perspective that is given by the Holy Spirit. A common application is where believers are genuinely seeking the Lord but are, in the natural, at an impasse. The word of wisdom brings the clarity to move forward. The decision given in Acts 15 regarding gentile believers' responsibility to the Law was possibly a 'word of wisdom'. Another example is the message Paul received in the vision of the man from Macedonia in Acts 16.

To another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit: meaning either knowledge of future events; or an universal knowledge of the Scriptures of truth, and the doctrines contained in them, of the whole mind and will of God therein, which is a distinct thing from saving grace.
Knowledge of future events is a different gift: prophecy. General knowledge of the Scriptures is imparted by teaching and study and is available to every believer. In contrast, the word of knowledge is a Spirit-given piece of information that is not known in the natural. It can be the secret of someone's heart, the whereabouts of an object, or a bit of data that is available to only some but hidden from others. Elisha received words of knowledge about the king of Aram's plans in 2 Kings 6:8-12.

Knowledge and understanding about the doctrine of faith is not the gift of faith. Nor is ability, boldness, nor "intrepidity of spirit to assert and defend it". Rather, this unusual faith is a specific application of general faith (Hebrews 11:1) in a particular situation; it is a certainty that God will act according to His declaration (whatever it is) in the face of doubt, confusion, or indifference. Paul was given this faith along with the angel's message in Acts 27, where he was told (and later relayed) that all with him on the ship would survive the storm.

To another discerning of spirits: by which gift such that were possessed of it could, in some measure, discern the hearts of men, their thoughts, purposes, and designs, their secret dissimulation and hypocrisy... by which also they could distinguish the Spirit of God from the lying spirits in men [including evil spirits speaking through men]
The hearts of men are not spirits, nor are their thoughts, purposes, designs, motivations, or hypocrisies; these may be discerned in the natural through experience, knowledge, and careful observation. Many police officers exercise this skill to some degree. The second part of Gill's commentary is correct; those with discernment of spirits can tell when an unclean spirit is operating in a situation or person. Paul exercised this gift when dealing with the possessed slave girl in Thyatira in Acts 16.

2. The gift of tongues is the least of the gifts
Paul does not say that tongues is the least; rather, he says that prophecy is greater.

(since 5 words of prophecy are greater than 10,000 words in tongues).
Scripture doesn't say that! In 1 Corinthians 14:19, Paul states that he would rather speak five words with his mind, that he may instruct others, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.

By the way, this also refutes the "tongues as mere foreign languages" idea, because one who is speaking a learned foreign language is speaking with his or her mind.

3. Tongues were a sign to unbelieving Jews, as prophesied by Isaiah.
Addressed above.

6. Women may not speak in tongues within a church meeting.
That is clearly eisegesis. While I will grant that the context is the gift of tongues, the verse does not include the words, "in tongues" in verse 34.

Further, if women are merely restricted from speaking in tongues, then there is no restriction on them speaking in church in the local language, or in another language with interpretation.

When we examine the spiritual gifts (gifts of the Holy Spirit) to believers for the edification of the Church we find that there are two broad categories: (1) the temporary gifts and (2) the permanent gifts.

Who is the 'we'? Aren't you just airing your own opinion. Again?

What should be noted is that EVERY GENUINE CHRISTIAN MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE OF THESE GIFTS: But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Cor 12:7)
Yes. Now let's go over that it should be noted not to attribute to the devil what is of the Holy Spirit. It should also be noted that you are in direct conflict with scripture AND experience. Now if a person is saved, shall we say that their salvation is limited to biblical times? Well that does not make sense you say. Now, you are getting the point.

As we can see, if all these gifts were being exercised, every church would flourish spiritually. But if no one brings these gifts into focus, then all that people can think about is tongues and healing.
That is both slander and would be funny if you were not serious. Who are the people who cannot stop thinking about tongues? May I put it to you, that would actually be you and certain others in this forum. Was there really a need for another thread of this nature? Of course not. But when you cannot stop thinking about what you see others have and all you can do is demand they stop, then I guess you continue to create these types of 'floundering' threads.

The other gifts will NEVER flourish in a church that denies the extant existence of the three as do you. It will simply not happen and of course we have thousands of churches that are the proof of that very thing. Evidence I believe some would call it.

No need to point out error. It is there just as much as this error of yours persists. I would call it even and somewhere is the truth provided by God and made sure by His Spirit.

Knowledge has ceased? (there is evidence for truth in some cases to be sure). Again, who is the we? What you seem to believe is not written in any Bible I have held in my hands and read from nor have I heard it from believers. Why do you not believe?

The gift of tongues was endowed to Gentiles. Your argument is not with us. You either chose to ignore what scripture states or God has blinded you to it because of your hardness of heart towards certain gifts.

Thomas had the luxury of physcially touching Christ. Sorry dude. You just have us to tell you that it is real.

Gift of knowledge as a spiritual gift is not the same as knowledge itself. So the gift of knowledge passing away is to do with a special purpose at the time of the apostles.. not general knowledge.

God has used me giving me the "gift of knowledge" on specifics more than one time.

It underscored the validity of the message of the Gospel when sharing with individuals.

It was the Holy Spirit and never I.

No, speaking in tongues wasnt just a sign for (Jews) the scripture below was written to the church in (Corinth, Greece) gentiles, your claim is false
How can my claim be false when Paul told the Corinthians exactly what I have said? The church at Corinth no doubt has both Jews and Gentiles, but that did not stop Paul from quoting Isaiah's prophecy -- which applied EXCLUSIVELY to unbelieving Jews: In the Law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people [ISRAEL]; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. (1 Cor 14:21,22)

The "Law" here is the Old Testament, and here is what is written in the Law (Isa 28:7-12) where God strongly condemns Israel:

But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean. Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people [ISRAEL]. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

The Lord Jesus Christ condemned the Jews for always looking for a sign, and told the unbelieving Jews that the only sign they would receive was the sign of the prophet Jonah. That condemnation did not apply to Gentiles.

Thus tongues were a sign to unbelieving Jews that the Gospel was of divine origin. And that is what we see in Acts 2. But only 3,000 out of possibly 30,000 Jews were saved on the day of Pentecost. As we see shortly thereafter, unbelieving Jews and their religious leaders began to persecute the Church immediately, and the Pharisee Saul (later on the apostle Paul) was among the leaders of that persecution.

It is interesting to note that while this thread is about all the other spiritual gifts which are for the present day, those responding (some very nastily) are trying to defend the bogus modern phenomenon of glossolalia.

Yes, and WE also know that this is speaking of a time yet future....

1 Corinthians
13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether [there be] prophecies, they shall fail; whether [there be] tongues, they shall cease; whether [there be] knowledge, it shall vanish away.
13:9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

Why does the idea of gifts bother some so much that they go to such lengths to deny it? Would you deny it if you suddenly woke up in the middle of the night and you were doing it?

When we meet Him face to face, we shall not even need faith. We shall walk by sight, but for now...

Hebrews
11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
11:2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.
11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
11:6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

...and the time that we hope for will come soon enough. Don't rush God, and don't throw His gifts in the garbage quite yet.

This Gift Is The Same Today As Given 43 Years Ago, No Practice Or Slap In The Head At A Pentecostal Church, Just On My Knees In My Room, With A Sincere Heart, Asked And Given Amen

I Have Shared My Testimony, No Further Comment From Me

Jesus Christ Is Lord!
Do you understand the context of Isaiah 28, where Paul used it in 1 Cor 14, or you basically don't care to understand?

The Gift Of Speaking In Other Tongues Is A Gift, Alive And Well Today
Agree. Unfortunately, Satan's counterfeit is also alive today. This may be the source of many doubts and confusion.

1 Corinthians
14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
14:38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

I was talking about Isa 28.

I am not forbidding tongue speaking.
