It is the mechanism of the mask to trap smaller particles because of the masks specifications, additionally a face shield with the surgical mask helps reduce transmission.

Early on (Fed/March), they didn't know the majority of transmission of Covid-19 were by asymptomatic carriers. They wanted to use the existing masks for medical professionals dealing directly with patients who tested positive. When they finally learned how Covid-19 was being spread (asymptomatic carriers), he recommended wearing masks. By that time, there were plenty in stock (though N95's are still restricted). I remember this specifically because I could not buy anywhere in late March. I ended up buying some on ebay from someone who was making them.

I had the ability to drop a few hundred dollars for 100x quantity N95's from someone who bought them at the start of the pandemic and was trying to make a profit. I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of price gauging and making an insane profit and I would have felt guilty using one when many medical professionals at the time had a shortage. Those on the front lines deserved them over people who have the luxury to work from home.

People seem to want to deny all the variables and reasons for actions over and over and distill everything down to a Communist take over.

Science now that's funny.
It was a science teacher who video confrenced at a school district board meeting urging the district to switch to virtual learning because she doesn't feel safe in the classroom, where she has multiple students in her room each day, who have been doing who knows what, and families who have been who knows where.
That same SCIENCE teacher was standing in line on the day after Thanksgiving at a doorbuster event hamming it up for the selfies, squealing with her friends and having a "gay ol' time" in the middle of a crowd of complete strangers...........
but please don't make me come to work in the classroom everyday with the same group of people. I want to stay in my warm pj's, in my cozy bed an extra 45 minutes, and not have to commute to and from the building. I want to roam around my home doing whatever suits my fancy during the periods of the day when I have no classes. After all, the science behind these overinflated made up numbers tells me that it's safer to be locked in my home away from everyone......
