Hello everyone! I recently finished reading the New Testament and I am beginning to reread the Bible again. I am looking for someone who has the time to possibly read with me from time to time and have discussions about what is read. I am looking for a mentor or partner so to speak, to learn from one another and teach one another. Christian walk is lonely when you lose friends due to lifestyle changes but I wouldn’t change it for the world nor do I regret my decision to dedicate my life to Christ. I would like more Christian friends and influences and just someone to study the word with, since I am unable to go to church at the moment, which I miss so much! God Bless!

Problem with such requests is you haven't a clue the intent, character or theology of anyone here. Nor anything about their reputation. You haven't the first clue what they'll try to teach or what they act like. That's kind of like a business hiring for a job without any interview, checking resources or even an application, and just taking the first person willing to work that shows up.

I always suggest Charles Hadden Spurgeon if you want to read REALLY sound doctrine and writings that will help you grow your faith and knowledge of scripture. I would not trust anyone in a forum no matter how sweet they might seem....screwy theology abounds.
Everything he ever wrote including his sermons is on-line and free.....he was VERY prolific.

I started out in a Conservative Baptist church. Conservative is the type of Baptist denomination that has good solid basic teaching without the pressure of other groups to..... be more, do more, live higher......until you are convinced being a Christian is more of a burden than to be free indeed. Attend one and get into their bible studies.

I am new like you. I am not qualified to be a mentor of anyone, and would not pretend to teach you anything. I am qualified to read the Bible and talk about what I have read, and what it means to me. That being said, what it means to me may not be what it means to everyone else.

I would read what Book, Chapter, Verse you want, and talk about it with you. I guess we can learn about each other, and about what the Scripture is saying together. Trusting in the Holy Spirit should insulate us from one or the other being unworthy of fellowship. I have no reason to doubt your sincerity, and I assure you I am sincere in offering to read and talk about Scriptures with you. You can decide.

God bless

JMitchell:

This is a Scripture that has been on my mind for two days now.

If you shall ask anything in my name, I shall do it. John, 14:14

Why it has been on my mind is that quite often I catch myself ending my prayers by saying: "in Christs name I pray." But Christ is not the last name of Jesus, it is His "title," right? So, I should be saying: "in the name of Jesus I pray."

I do not think it is a terrible mistake, or that it would invalidate my sincere prayer request, but according to what Jesus said here, it is not how we should pray?

What are your thoughts?

I love the way you so desire to do what is right, to know all the truth there is to know.
As a child of the Lord for over 40 years I just want you to know that what you know now is like one drop in a torrential rainstorm.
And you will grow in faith and knowledge: For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little" Isaiah 28:10.

There are no mistakes that God cannot correct if you have a teachable spirit

If you want direction for prayer try this.
ACTS 1 adoration 2 confession 3 thanksgiving 4 supplication
Remembering that God knows your desires, and we pray in HIS will for us, not our will for ourselves and others.
When you address the Father in prayer....try whatever is comfortable for you...
if you want a formal way to end prayer, try "in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ"
or as I do many times during the day.........bye for now, love you!

The trouble if you saturate your self with Spurgeon you will come away with the error of Calvinsm. Far better to learn what the bible says .

Keep reading the scriptures . Time and time again the mistake is made when we start to listen and trust a theological system to have come back to the Scriptures. My advice would be to avoid the ' isms ' . The two main errors to avoid are Calvinism and Arminism.

Exactly, I wouldn’t know the intent of the person, but that is the point of getting to know one another and praying on it and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide and lead me and show me what’s right. I am not completely new to the faith. I can discern false doctrine because I’ve read the Word for myself and I believe everything that the Word says. There is no one who can tell me different because I know my God doesn’t lie. The relationship I have with him proves his Word is true. I am open to getting to know someone who is willing though. I can’t assume anyone is good or assume that anyone is bad. I wouldn’t know until it is revealed and God will not lead me into a trap. He doesn’t deceive. I know the devil does but that’s what discernment is for. I took a chance and put it out there to see who would want to read the Word with me and simply have discussions.

Thank you all! I just want to stick to the Word honestly. I have 3 pastors that I watch all the time that has helped me in abundance and I rather stick to what I’m already doing because it works and helps. I just simply wanted to get to know someone FIRST, read the Word from time to time, and simply have discussions. That is all. God Bless you all!

Hello JMitchell, A mentor I’m not. An email biblical pen pal I’m eager. I’m also fairly new here and I’m 84 years old and a widower having lost my wife a year ago and thereby drawing closer to God. I’d enjoy some fellowship with someone learning/relearning the scriptures. I’ll try a PM to you and maybe we can hook up email.

Honestly, I end all of my prayers in this form: “In Jesus name..... In Jesus Holy, Mighty name..... Amen” That has never failed me once. I know my prayers are heard and answered based on the things that happen in my life. Do what makes you feel comfortable and the Holy Spirit will show you the right way.

Great. I do not have the app and I am not subscribed. It will be risky posting my email publicly. Should a new thread be started and we can start from there?

At 84 I don't worry much about posting my email and I just did with a PM I sent you on this site. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Stay very close to the Lord. Take everything you hear to Him in prayer. Check everything with the Bible. Men WILL offer many false interpretations of it, but the Holy Spirit will help you discern truth from error. Nothing is more edifying than getting alone with God and letting His Spirit speak to you through His Word. Concerning others, the Bible says this...

Matthew
7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither [can] a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Galatians
5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

I am only suggesting a type of bible study that I found most beneficial as you study with others.

If one person(or more) reads any particular passage or chapter, DON'T set a single person as the interpreter or teacher.

Just ask everyone in the group what stood out to them. And allow all responses with grace.

God will have different portions stand out to each individual as they have need. And your Bible study will be the richer for allowing all the insights to be expressed.

If dissaggreements arise, remind all that God is the holder of all true understanding and he's not a respect of persons. EVERYONE has the right and responsibility to take the thing to God in PRAYER (not argument) and let Him reveal the truth of the matter. Anyone unwilling to do that is likely going to be deceived at some point anyway.

I wish you well in your seeking.

Love in Jesus,
Kelby

Hello JMitchell.
i would be happy to speak of our dear Lord with you, but I see the gospel differently from most Christians I've spoken with.
