Locking doors

huh well maybe americans have good reason to be paranoid bit just seems real sad to me. They lock themselves in and become prisoners. the whole drama over the wall seems weird too. When reason is that theres already people INSIDE america already who are stealing stuff and terrorising and drug dealing, so a wall isnt going to do anything. People can just fly over.

in nz, if your house has a high fence and security cameras, it usually means that house IS the dodgy drug house lol.
the retirent village that was gated, a lot of the time the residents would say they felt like prisoners. Not sure if they were joking or not. it was kind of like entering fort knox working there.

People are generally ok in nz, although difference between rich and poor is widening. Theres more crimes in rich areas then poorer areas in terms of theft, but more violence in poorer areas where theres nothing to steal. Which stands to reason.

we had a shoplifter take $200 worth of toys from the bookshop, because she hid in the corner and just loaded up her bag when the shopkeepers were busy at the till. Thing is the shop owner now wants to install a secrity gate thing and tahs that costs ten times as much as the stolen goods. and Im like why. The best thing to do is dont have a blind spot at the till and make sure theres enough staff and greet everyone as they come in.

if you dont want anyone stealing anything, you could just have the till right at the entrance and tell people if they want to touch any goods they have to ask the shopkeeper. that is if you are real paranoid. but out in the country, we have things like honesty boxes and leave put goods and if someone wants to pay they just drop money in the box for some fruit. although we also have stands where people GIVE food for free and you can just take what you need.

Silly to lock the door while inside your house? Ever heard of home invasion robberies?
There are people who can open your unlocked door, which is their invitation in their sick little minds, and enter your house with you unaware. Until of course they appear wherever you are in the house. Oh, and typically? They're armed. If they don't come armed they can take their time and find a knife in your kitchen to arm themselves with. Because you're door was unlocked and you were elsewhere, like maybe doing laundry. And then there they are with that huge butcher knife from the knife block on your counter.
What then?

I think it was in Detroit awhile ago it was reported that a burglary ring there utilized pet doors to gain access and commit a home invasion on the sleeping homeowners. Adult criminals brought their small pupil for crime of the future child along for just that reason. They could fit into most pet doors which they knew were able to be accessed around the clock.

Now there are doors that the homeowner can lock on the inside to prevent such things. And also to prevent critters access. Coons, possum, even roaming hungry foxes that can smell pet kibble inside the house.



I by no means intend to convince someone to lock their car or house. Prayerfully such people opposed to the security measure will live long happy lives never being trespassed upon due to their choices.

I'm reminded of when my husband and i went out of town to play for a wedding. we stayed one night in a motel. at some random hour of the night, we heard someone at the door trying to unlock it. thank the Lord nothing happened. we assumed it was a drunk person who had the wrong room. or maybe it wasn't a drunk person. either way, our door was locked.

Typo's are what happens when me wittle mind works a wee bit slower than me keyboarding fingers. This above should read, Because you're one whose door was unlocked and you were elsewhere, like maybe doing laundry. I fixed it in the quote too. Bad brain, bad bad.

Should I be worried? There was an earlier post in the Misc section asking where everyone is from. Now we're being asked if we lock our doors.

Ooooooh, I had not thought of that! Maybe somebody is using the forum to case a lot of joints at once.

I'm in the South so there are guns all over the neighborhood... And I am in the South, but we lock our doors. Anybody casing our joint can come on over and give it their best shot. And probably get shot.

I lock the door to the library when Im not there, so children dont mess it up, or I come back to find theres been someone been bullying someone else in there. (as has happened)

But I dont lock it when im in there. I generally DO want people to come in and read books ya know.

I am no stranger to people invading 'my' space but generally people are pretty respectful here

I teach children, if they borrow books they need to return them after they have read them its not like a shop where you buy things to keep. And if you do decide to just take something, you either bring it back or pay for it. Or swap it for something else of similar value. so there is no such thing as stealing.

They can be in to win prizes, but I have learned not to have chocolate as prizes, because that doesnt last very long in the cupboard. I have an 'open' and 'closed' sign on the door and for people that can read..its like wow, if the door is closed but the sign says open that means I can walk in. If the door is closed and the sign says closed that means I cant.
If the door is open and the sign says closed that just confuses everyone lol
