The Greek word theopneustic is a composite word, thought by some to have been coined by Paul which literally means 'God-breathed' and conveys to us the understanding that Scripture is inspired and breathed out by God as an extension of Himself through His Spirit and further indicates to us the origin of the Scriptures as being not the words of man but the words of God: Divine words which are continually at work in all believers. ,
The Apostle Paul warns about abusing God-inspired scriptural Truths when writing his second letter to Timothy chapter 2 v14 with the words: 'Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarrelling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.
One of the ways that Bible content can be abused is by trying to prove a point when disagreeing with others. In the majority of these situations, the disagreement is about word and verse definition or faulty redactions and translations and then is often achieved some spurious outcome by claiming opinions to represent meaning, as opposed to seeking out and understanding the 'Truths' which are there for those who are prepared to see and understand.
In John 5:39 Jesus gave His warning not only to the Jews but to all when He said:: 'You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!' Let us not send out words to do battle against words to the detriment of God-breathed scripture but diligently search out Christ in both our reading and our understanding.
It can appear very foolish to those of the secular world when Christians become involved in petty and sometimes not so petty quarrels over trivial issues that all too often boil down to no more than semantics and which diminishes the life saving, God breathed, biblical Truths and this happens to both clerics and lay people.
There are many warnings in scripture about trivialising the Word of God and about those who do so. In Proverbs 18:2 we are told that 'Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight only in airing their own opinions.' thereby providing some enlightenment as to a possible motive.
The following are just a few of the many warnings given and there are many more.
2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
2 Timothy 2:14
Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
2 Timothy 2:23-25
Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth,
2 Timothy 2:14
Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers.
1 Timothy 6:4
He is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions,
Romans 14:1
As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.
1 Peter 3:15
But in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.
