How do you reconcile these two verse using one verse as a commandment in order to reconcile?.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-10

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? James 2 :20

It's not salvation WITH works, but salvation THAT works. The FRUIT of salvation is the doing of good, coupled with the resistance of evil. For example if I had planted a tomato plant but it produced nothing, then my investment was without worth. So is the one who receives salvation but his lifestyle remains the same as before.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

A man is drowning in rushing torrent. Another man, standing on shore, throws him a life-ring attached to a rope to that man's waist. The drowning man makes a calculation. He can do nothing and perish. Or he can BELIEVE that the ring, rope and man on shore will be strong enough to save him. He decides to BELIEVE in the savior on shore and grabs the ring. After some moments the drowning man is safe on shore for the savior was the winner of "world's strongest man" competition, and easily pulled the drowning man to shore. That is Ephesians 2.

But the narrative could have gone the other way and the man drowned. He is pulled to shore a mile downstream and a trained medic gives resuscitation for ten minutes and then cries; "THE MAN LIVES!" People gather round and a lady bystander sees no sign of life. So she takes her make-up mirror and holds it under the stricken man's nose. No moisture forms on the mirror indicating no breathing. The lady cries; "HE IS DEAD!". The woman might be wrong, but the INDICATIONS are on her side. All INDICATIONS are that the man is dead. That is James. Matthew 7:16-20 says that by their fruits we will know them!

But it goes deeper than that. Whatever good works one does, there is a price. Just the "doing" takes effort, and the Lord's example of the Good Samaritan shows that it will cost. How will you meet the bills if you help somebody who eats your resources? It might just be your vacation that you have to cancel. But it might be an upcoming medical treatment that you will have to cancel. THIS ... is where FAITH really comes in. It is not in the good works itself that faith has its work, but in the CONSEQUENCES. Do you trust God to meet your needs when you have spent your resources on another?

And this leads to the last point, which is; Make sure that you have been ordered by the Holy Spirit to do whatever you propose to do. God is not responsible for the disobedient. The contrary is evident in Matthew 7:21. "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOES the will of my Father which is in heaven." Never mind a doctor's bill, or the loss of an automobile. Consider that to do any work without a command from the Holy Spirit, even casting out a demon, puts you in danger of being exiled from the Kingdom when the Lord comes.

Faith is for your COMMUNION with God - your fellowship. Works are the logical issue of this relationship.

The difference is being in the flesh, and being in the Spirit.

We are saved by faith, and not by works, when we first confess Christ for that is all we can do for we have not received the Spirit yet.

When we receive the Spirit then we have to have works for faith to be applied in our life.

Out of faith, hope, and charity, love in action, works, charity is the greatest.

Love is greater than faith, and faith works by love.

Paul said he could have all faith so that he could remove mountains, but if he did not have charity he is nothing.

And said if any person preaches that God blesses the saints with their wants, money and material things, from such withdraw yourselves, having food and clothing be content.

For the love of money is the root of all evil for it neglects the poor and needy, and love is the fulfilling of the law, which if people go by their wants they have erred from the faith.

James said without charity their faith is dead, so we are justified by works, and not faith alone.

John said without charity the love of God does not dwell in them, so do not love in word, or in tongue, but in deed, works, and truth.

Love is greater than faith, and love has to be done in works for it to be valid.

The Bible says some have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof, from such turn away, and are ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth, for they hold unto sin and believe they are still saved for they say they have faith.

But that is not love so then they do not have faith.

For Paul said love does not think an evil thought, and does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth, which if a person hates sin, and does not want sin, by the Spirit they can abstain from sin, for a Spirit led person will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, for they have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts, and show the ways of the Spirit and not the flesh.

If we do sin we get rid of it and keep going in the Spirit with the proper attitude that we are not right with God if we hold unto sin.

For the Lord knows them that are His having this seal that those that name the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

And awake to righteousness, and sin not, but some do not have the knowledge of God.

Many hypocrites living by their wants, and holding unto sin, and think they are saved because they say they have faith.

But Paul, James, and John says that is not faith.

For faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

So faith is having the proper perspective of God and His kingdom that He hates sin, and does not want us to do sin, and His kingdom is love which is greater than faith.

Paul and James say the same thing when a person receives the Spirit.

I would offer. It is impossible to separate faith from works. Its all one and the same thing

I would think faith "the plan" cannot be separate from the works "the doing". . We are saved by works but not that of our own self In that way faith is a work it cannot be separate from the plan .

The loving commandment is not a suggestion. We are not to blaspheme the name of Christ James 2:1, it is the key. that protects us from blasphemy verse 7.

James 2 King James Version (KJV) My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

Even the Son of man Jesus had to obey the commandment of the father. No man can serve two teaching Masters .the things seen the temporal and the unseen eternal.

We cannot have the faith of Christ that works in us in respect to any person to include one self . The golden rule ; we all stand on the same fallow ground. The mutual work faith of Christ in us . Its not the faith of Paul , James or of Abraham, Rahab the harlot ..But the unseen power that works from within

Philippians 2:12-14 King James Version (KJV) Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings:

Paul is speaking to the effective force in salvation. That is, salvation doesn't happen because we have done good things. Salvation is offered from the goodness of God not being divied up based on who merits it more.

On the other hand, James is speaking to what faith produces. Saving faith never manifests without subsequent works. The works are the completion of the faith that is held, in a sense the tangible form of them.

It is much deeper than mere appearances, as James is speaking to the very same justification Paul is. Yet they are speaking of different aspects of that justification, one being the impetus and the other being the effect.

To convert from an Unbeliever to a Believer requires ZERO works.

To show yourself a genuine convert with living faith requires evidence by WORKS.

Reminds me of a preacher who kept asking people what does James say in that verse, and his respondents kept telling him what they thought he was saying.

Until that preacher was so frustrated that he kept repeating "You are not answering what I am asking, I am asking what did James say?"

Until one of them just gave up and repeated word for word that verse, and that preacher finally said "Thank you".

Galatians 2:20-21 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
