HOW OLD IS THE EARTH?
According to this site I looked up, the earth is about 6000 years old. But I'd like to figure out myself too - how to determine it's age by looking at genealogies in the Bible, and at any other information in the Bible there may be that can be used to determine the age of the earth too.

According to what I have learned in my studies, the Hebrew, Lunar Calendar and date is the known amount of time since Adam
I say known because it has been reckoned by only information afforded by our Holy Scriptures from Adam.
You may already know tis but just in the event you do not correlate it with the information to follow, now you may.
There is one law, not to add to nor take away from the Word of the Lord.
Obeying this law, the Hebrew scholars compiling the data afforded by the Word from Adam and including all of the genealogies supplied the Calendar is put into effect. However because some of the genealogies are deliberately loft out, so the scholars left obit the data they would have supplied because they were not supplied and they would not guess at the times left out they simply left out those genealogies in order to comply with the law, that is not to add to nor take away.
Today we are in the year 5780, nearing the new year. With the knowledge already that back in the day people lived up to over 900 years, and with at least one or more genealogy omitted from our knowledge we are by the calendar only 220 years from the seventh thousand years to begin.
It would be a lot closer with the genealogies complete but of that day and of that hour only the Father knows. So now, praise our blessed Maker, He is returning very soon....................

Well, I personally see no mention of the earth being 4.5 billion years. I prefer to go by what i do see of the number of years mentioned in the Bible, though, for earth's history. Though in heaven, indeed, time is eternal - endless! And equally eternal for those who will be in hell! How fortunate those are who die in the Lord, as they will live eternally with God in heaven!

Yes, so i see you also see earth's age as being in the 6000s - and also feel it may be approaching the 7000th year. I hadn't seen that idea yet of possibly approaching the 7000th year. One part of history I've noticed not mentioned in years much in the Bible, is the period of the kings until the birth of Jesus. So that makes it hard to determine for me. Yes, I do believe the Lord's return is soon! And how important it is for individuals to make sure they are ready for that great event! And I'm so glad I'm ready for it! As no doubt - you are, too!

If you go by scripture we find that as God began creating His earth "the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered surface of the water depth............. So God's creation did not start from an empty space. Genesis 1:2.

As for mankind-s view of the age of the earth, believers excluded, there are many manners of measuring rock strata, the history of orogenic events, the distance to the center of the universe to its extreme, which can only be estimate, and the time taken for planets stars and other bodies to trave from that theoretical center, and so much more, yet there is one very nagging truth.

Civilization(s) are historical and can only be determined as existing through what man has deemed history.

History began when man first was given to write it down. Knowing this we see that there is hardly any connection between what scientists believe is prehistory and history itself. In other words, previous to written knowledge of mankind there is nothing substantial to support the world being older than what has been recorded.

Yes, I'm aware of that. But even so, there is no indication in the Bible of how long that formless mass (or whatever it used to be) existed before God created the world and the universe.

The 4.5 billion-year age is speculation. It is only loosely rooted in scientific observation about rock layers, but that conclusions are corrupted by the a priori belief in uniform processes that require long ages to account for the observed data. James Hutton and Charles Lyell, who first wrote about rock layers and were the effective founders of modern geology, were also anti-theists.

There have been many actual scientific experiments demonstrating that the existing layers could have come into existence in very short time frames, well within the timelines of biblical genealogies. I recommend the videos available from AnswersInGenesis on this and related subjects.

Incidentally, fossils are no help to the old-earth crowd, because fossil dates are based on rock layers in which they are found. There is evidence both that fossils can form very quickly (within decades) and that even dinosaur fossils may not be older than a few thousand years.

What is important is that men accept the gospel. If there is proof that the earth is older than the 6,000 plus years and the man is sure the bible tells them something that isn't true, there is great damage done to man. It isn't a question then, of how old the earth is, but a question of whether scripture (and God) can be trusted.

I think that it is vitally important, then, that men accept that both science and scripture can be correct. There are people who label God stupid for saying the scientist are wrong, when actually God's knowledge is as vast as creation. It id false gossip against our Holy God.

God only knows. What does it matter? Regardless of the age of the earth, we must follow Jesus Christ to be saved!

I mean, I don't even know what I ate yesterday, let alone when the earth was exactly born.

Godspeed.

That has already been done. See the Chronology of the Old Testament by Martin Anstey. He uses "the Year of Man" (Anno Hominis or AH) to calculate the age of the earth, beginning with Adam. So yes, approximately 6,000 years is about right. This also lines uo with Carbon dating: "The half-life of carbon is 5,730 years, which means that it will take this amount of time for it to reduce from 100g of carbon to 50g – exactly half its original amount."

The half-life of carbon-14 just happens to be close to 6,000 years. I see no other connection, and certainly no connection with carbon dating.

The earth is as old as dirt.
Wellll...? Technically.. dirt is formed by ....Over hundreds of years, rocks break down into tiny grains, and these small grains, mixed with plant and animal matter — decayed roots, leaves, dead bugs and worms, and other organic matter thrown in, along with water and air — is what we call dirt or soil. ... so therefore, it would depend on which dirt you were talking about as some dirt might be younger than other dirt. :p
