Out of the four Gospels in the Bible, which is your favorite?

Saw this asked on another Christian forum. So I thought I would ask it here too.


The four Gospels do share some similarities, I'm sure. After all, each Gospel is about the life and teachings of Christ. But there are still some noticeable differences between each one. For example, the shortest and longest Gospels are Mark and Luke. But there are other differences as well.


So feel free to say which Gospel you're fond of the most. You can also say why you like that one in particular....but you don't have to if you don't want to.

I like John because it shows the love Jesus has for his followers better than the other gospels.

I like them all equally, if I’m not mistaken I think Matthew is the longest with 28 chapters

I just finished a study that went through all of them chronologically. That's how you get the whole story.

The one thing I’m not a huge fan of is the paraphrasing all four gospels use paraphrasing but Luke and John seem to use them more often than the others.

there is a verse I’ve read that is a example of extreme paraphrasing, that the shortness of the Event seems to imply Jesus found a donkey yet that wasn’t the case the disciples found the donkey just as Jesus said they would. the example below is one that I think was shortened a little to much in John 12 that is similar to a news flash rather than a complete dialogue. I know more of the account can be found in the other gospels but the Jesus found a donkey isn’t quite what happened.


John 12:14 Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written:

I like the Gospel of John a lot, and really all of John writings, especially the Apocalypse. John has a very distinct style and a lot of insights into matters that are more spiritual. Though indeed all four Gospels are good for knowledge and confirmation of the Lord Jesus whom is the Christ.

This isnt a huge point but there are at least two ways the John 12:14 account is still correct.
1. In all 3 of the other accounts, Jesus told the disciples where to find the donkey, which means he'd found it first and simply told them where they could find it also.
2. Even without that, he would have "found" the donkey in the possession of his disciples when they brought it to him.

I also much appreciate the way the gospel of John expresses love.

it not much of a issue the other gospels do mention the whole account but the paraphrasing of the event seems shortened to a mere header in John 12

You make a good point I agree though Jesus finding it first hmm I would still have to think on him finding it first or actually knowing it was to be.

its a toss up between mathew and John. both mathew and john are 1st hand accounts of what they heard and saw jesus do. Marks gospel has been called 'peters' gospel. because mark was the scribe for peter and traveled with peter every where he went. it is believed that mark wrote down what peter preached every where. So he recorded his gospel from a first hand source. and the gospel of luke was written by a physician who went with paul every where. He was an investigator and wrote down the information that he got from others that he interviewed! Thus his is the least accurate gospel of the four. all four gospels had a different emphasis on jesus life. they were written for four different audiences. I wont go into all of that here. that is for a different study.

They are all tools for the job. I use John to prove the trinity. Matthew to prove Christian ethics. Mark = Deity of Christ and power over Satan and Demons. Luke defines the Abomination of Desolation when compared to Matthew. Etc..

Tom Bradford has done a very in depth study of Matthews. Tom spent eight years devoted to study of scripture, mostly in Jerusalem. His study of Matthews is on the net at the Torahclass site. He has studied ancient history documents so that he can tell of the background of this book.

As one tiny example we learn that Papias said that Matthews originally wrote in Hebrew, not Greek. What Papias wrote is lost to us, but two men (Eusibius and Irenaes) does have what they wrote about it available and both these men wrote that it was originally in Hebrew. This means that probably Matthews was a Jew.

I haven't finished the study, but this study brings out background information that makes this book fascinating.

Matthew is my favorite for all the detail; but when one of my childhood pastors pointed out that Luke, as a doctor, paid careful attention to his recordings of Jesus' healings and miracles, it won a special place in my heart.

I've always wondered what kinds of questions Luke must have asked Jesus from the perspective of a medical professional -- especially with everything going on in the world right now.

(For instance, what would Jesus say about triage situations?)
