According to the Scriptures means "exactly as it is written in the Bible."

It's a statement that basically conveys the belief that the Biblical testimony concerning the action in question is a true and complete record of actual events.

You can contrast it what Paul was saying to what was preached in early Acts by Peter and the 11 to understand the difference. Examples were
  1. Acts 2:36, where Peter says, "... Jesus, whom ye crucified ...."
  2. Peter also says in Acts 3:14-15, "But ye denied the Holy One ... and killed the Prince of life ...."
  3. Then in Acts 5:30 he says, "... Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree."
  4. Finally Stephen, who also preached Peter's gospel, told the Jews in Acts 7:52, "Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers ...."
The 12 basically used the death of Jesus as a murder accusation to all the Jews, thus they are to repent of that murder.

Only until Paul's revealing of the mystery, that the idea of Christ died for our sins, the divine exchange, was fully understood. The ascended Christ revealed that to him.

It means simply: That God swallowed up all of the wrath of God once and for all, for those who alone will trust in Christ for salvation and not themselves.

For i am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, for in it [the gospel] righteousness is given, being imputed by faith alone.

Hi LL, it means that Christ's walk on earth and his fate, was recorded in the Old Testament (scriptures). Thus, implying that Christ fulfilled the prophetical attestation of himself, which was given to the prophets of old, to inscribe them in the scriptures of what we now call the Old Testament.
Paul is stating that the proof of Christ's Messiaship can be proven through scripture, if any are to question his divine auspices. And, that the anticipation of his arrival and purpose was fulfilled accordingly, leaving very little room to doubt his divine calling and Lordship.

What does the whole thing mean though?
I will try to answer your question in the spirit I believe it is being asked in. So what does it all mean...Jesus dying for our sins?

Firstly, do you think you're perfect? Have you done bad things in your life? I believe that everyone knows that they have failed to live a perfect life, that we've all fallen short at one time or another. And equally I think everyone knows that they will make mistakes again in the future. Here's my confession...I know I have fallen short, that I've done things that are contrary to the will of God. I also know that in the future I will fall short of perfection.

If you don't know what sins are, you can start by reading the 10 commandments. Even someone who's never read them though, I believe they still know that these things are wrong....lying, cheating, stealing, lust, murder etc.

Christians believe that all of humanity has falled short of God's perfection. So the question becomes....How can we reconcile ourselves to a perfect God when we are not perfect? How can God allow us into his Holy Presence when we are so far away from Him?
In the Old Testament, under the old covenant human beings had to go through all manner of rituals and sacrifices to atone for the sins committed...lambs, goats, doves, their blood would be spilled to make atonement for what had been done wrong.

With Jesus we have a new covenant. Because Jesus went willingly to the cross our sins are forgiven....its a gift, one that not one of us is worthy of. But God so loves us that he sent His only begotten Son to die for us so that should not taste death, but we're not forced to accept this gift....its a choice.

It might seem simple, but if you read 1 Corrinthans Paul teaches us that the Gospel (the good news) was designed to be foolishness to those of us who are proud. "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."

Its nothing that we do, its a free gift....but humilty is something that runs counter to the culture most of us live in.
