A woman came to me yesterday. She was dishearted. She had lost her job, and she hadn't been working long enough to get unemployment money. Her husband, she said, was no good, and not nice at all. She needs to take an exam to get qualified as a skilled nurse assistant, but she knows she will probably fail her paper on Wednesday.
I can't give her a job. I can't give her advice to leave her husband. I can't help her through her exam. I can't even offer to baby sit her two children.
What can I do?
I asked if she wanted to go to church with me next Sunday. She smiled, and said yes, but her husband said it is too expensive to drive the three miles to church. I will probably pick her up.
Church doesn't give her a passed exam, nor a job. But that was the only thing I had to offer. Or what else should I do?
