How would you advise a beginner to use these books?

Earlier this year, one of the elders in my church suggested reading five Psalms a day. There are 150 Psalms, which means you would get through them in a month of thirty days. Starting on the first of any month, you would then read Psalm one, Psalm 31, Psalm 61, Psalm 91, and Psalm 121. Day two would be Psalm 2, Psalm 32, Psalm 62, Psalm 92, and Psalm 122. It was suggested to read Psalm 119 on the 31st day of the month because it is the longest chapter of the whole Bible weighing in at 176 verses :D Bob and I read through them together more than once that way :) Here are a couple of the panels I made at that time :geek:

How about Proverbs then? Does an encycopediac knowledge of them contribute to daily peace and contentment?

When the Going gets tough this can motivate us to seek God. This is good.

Read so that you may know what to repent for.
Read so that you may know how to pray to God.
Read so that you may know to fear God.
Read so that you may know to trust God, and not yourself.
Read so that you may know that trusting God is to trust his Word.
Read so that you may seek God, through His word.

Proverbs and Psalms and Job are God's Inspired Word. Sirach is not.

Even though Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) is not inspired, it is well worth reading and applying.

Im always reading Proverbs.

Proverbs has 31 chapters so you could read a chapter a day. Starting from the first of the month.
Otherwise my other method is to pray and ask God for wisdom and He usually gives me a Proverb reference to look up. Not always, but most of the time its from Proverbs.

Psalms is when Im going through something really tough and need a prayer...most of the psalms are actually prayers...! Psalm 23 and 91 are standout ones.

Jobs books is very interesting if you can make it through all the complaints! I love that Job gets an audience with God at the end and He tells him whats what. He really puts things in perspective, the worst that could happen to Job happens but guess what Job is still alive and survived, so what does that mean?!

My Bible doesnt have Sirach sorry!

Use them daily. And not just for new believers. Wrinkled, tired, old believers should also use them daily. There is an eternity of wisdom in the Word of God. A wisdom man can never come close to matching...…….
