This thread is just to list common words that are mispronounced, as edification for anyone else. Please practice saying these words properly!

Ok two that bug me is

library. It is not pronounced 'liberry'
And ask. It is not 'aks'

It’s like in that movie, ‘My Cousin Vinny’, where Joe Pesci, playing Mr Gambini, is saying ‘aks’ for ‘ask’ throughout the entire movie. I thought it was some strange east coast way of speaking lol.

What about ant for aunt. Its not ant...ants are those insects that crawl around.

Well, I'm not sure if it's like this where you live?

But here in the US, there are A LOT of regional differences.

Yes, I am one of those horribly uncultured people who calls my aunt, "Ant --------."

But where I was raised, that's just how people pronounce it.

We also mispronounce "Coke" and "soda."

We call it "pop". :) (Because it's a shortened version of "soda pop", which was an old-fashioned term for such drinks.)

Lol but people will get confused when you speak who are not from your area. You will be speaking supposedly the same language...english, but others just wont understand anything you say.

Its like australians always mispronounce six as sex. First time its funny but then its just gets annoying.

I had some French people learn english and instead of saying 'coke' they pronounced it 'cock' not that made for some embarassing misunderstandings.

My aunty (not my anty) could never say yeast. She just couldnt wrap her tongue around it. She would try but it always came out yeat.

My mum could never say 'slipper' when she said it it sounded like 'snapper' or worse, 'slapper' which is not a word you really want to use. Lol

Another I got confused about was instead of saying compost, americans would say compost like they were posting a letter. But possibly the americans are saying it right and everyone else is saying it wrong?!

Another was 'mental' americans would say 'menal' and wouldnt pronounce the 't' so you would have to guess they were saying 'mental hospital' and or talking about 'mental health' and not meaning something completely different. Maybe they were meaning 'men ill' and that only males were sick or something.

who's Italian? settle this plz.

The australians are right on this one, strangely enough. And its origins are spanish, not italian. According to my dictionaries.

I am such a nerd.

This is miscellaneous, the BDF is that aways....

My english second language teacher was Irish, which was hilarious, as we always asked him to say 'thirty third'
