To make a long story short, I ended up homeless and penniless and without a car after poor planning, and losing my car on the way to rescue a crime victim.
Due to health issues, I was not able to walk more than a few blocks, and wandered around town during the day looking for a phone and a place to sleep, occasionally passing out due to duress and exhaustion.
I'm not sure why I didn't walk out into the street and just flag down a car, but finally at night I asked for a ride from passersby. It was truly heroic of the people to pick up a stranger like that! But due to unknown health issues, I collapsed on the steps of a church with a faint heartbeat and awoke feeling a bit dazed. But, I survived and slowly recovered and friendly church members helped me out with lunch.
But I was still without a safe place to stay, until family members and past friends helped me get my car back. One old friend helped me out with a coat, another with some cash, and a friendly stranger gave me a hoody and other community members were helpful, including retired military personnel who bought me a dinner plate.
What can be learned from this is to be more like Jesus-- have many trustworthy friends on your phone in an emergency, some good backups, and survival plans. And a close relationship with the Lord and a church who you can rely on, and friendly people who just show up to save your life.
Heaven is always just a heartbeat away. When you almost leave this life, you learn to value what's sacred, including your own life.
