How does Jesus' death atone for our sins?

He could not have taken us seriously enough to allow His creation to cut and bleed the the flesh of Himself, but He did.
He loves us so much that He invested Himself COMPLETELY for our eternal well-being, and all for His Glory!!!
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 Corinthians 5:20-21 NASB

Look to the law
The ONLY means of redemption for anyone under the law was the death of an animal.
Granted there were many different types of sacrifices, each ended in the day of atonement. Which that one sacrifice one one day, cleared the slate for all people under the law.
This is what John the Baptist meant when he said here comes the lamb of god, who TAKES AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD.
Its also what the author of hebrews meant when he acknowledged without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.

You have to firstly understand what sin is, and how abhorrent it is to God. Sin is essentially a rejection of God and His moral and spiritual standards. It is an offence against His absolute holiness and righteousness. And there is a price to be paid for this, since this is God's universe, and He demands justice before He can offer mercy, grace, and forgiveness.
God knew in advance that when He created men and angels with a free will, they would choose to sin rather than obey God. Therefore God created Hell (the Lake of Fire) for the devil and his angels, and they all will be sent there for eternity.
But God did not have that destination in mind for mankind. Indeed, His goal for men was to make them in His image originally, and then transform sinners into the image of His Son (who is perfect in every way) through His plan of salvation.
No man (no sinner) could pay the price for his own sins, because (1) without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins and (2) even if a sinful man offered his life for his sins, that would not save him from eternal Hell. Because there would be no cleansing or purging of his sins and His guilt, for sins already committed.
Therefore the eternal Son of God willingly and voluntarily chose (before creation) to take the form of a Man, humble Himself, become obedient unto death, and shed His blood for our redemption. "Christ Jesus came into this world to save sinners" and "God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."
As to Christ being our "atonement" the correct term is our "propitiation". Atonement applied to the shed blood of animals (which covered sins for a season). Christ became our Propitiation (fully satisfactory sacrifice) by taking away our sins. He took them upon Himself and paid the full penalty for our sins on the cross. Through (a) His intense sufferings, (b) the pouring out of His blood and His life, and (c) His death on the cross, which meant taking the curse of sin and death upon Himself. His ONE SACRIFICE FOR SINS was sufficient for all humanity. And that is because of the fact that He is God (as well as sinless Man).

To keep it short we all deserve death for our sins and Jesus Christ died in our place because he wants us to live with Him forever. He wants that because He loves us and wants the best for us. Now we must respond appropriately by following Him and letting Him transform us into new people, the kind of people He wants us to be.

This was always a very hard question for me and I did a large amount of searching for this answer. Here is a condensed version of what I discovered.
Revelation 5:
Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
9 And they sang a new song, saying,
“Worthy are you to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”
Jesus sin free life and sacrifice accomplished 2 very great things.
1- Jesus sacrifice allowed humans who believed he was the Son of GOD to repent and cleanse themselves of the sin brought into this world by Satan and once cleansed they could be blessed with the Holy Spirit of GOD so they can be reconcilled to GOD.
2 Jesus sacrifice allowed him and only him to open the seals and begin the end of Satans dominion of this earth.
So before Christ's sacrifice from Adam and Eve to date every human being has fallen into Satan's temptation to sin and became separated from GOD.
Genesis 6:3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”
Christ's sacrifice however; allowed for a cleansing of sins so that GOD's Holy Spirit could return to mankind, reuniting mankind and GOD
John 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
In essence Jesus proving that he could live a sin free life (something that Satan could not do) allowed GOD to give Jesus authority.
Matthew 28: 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

This means someone has paid your sin debt that you cannot pay. At-one moment Jesus paid it all to reconcile men to God.

God has declared that without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sins. The blood of Jesus is the only blood sufficient to atone for all our sins. We either receive it or we remain in our sins and are forever condemned. We receive it by believing what God has written in His word and by grace we are given the benefits of Jesus death burial and resurrection.
This message is repeated throughout the bible and explained many ways. The message has not changed nor will it ever fail.
