FYI: Just for fun..........

(excerpts)

Josephus says the Pharisees maintained a simple lifestyle (Ant18.1.3 [12]), were affectionate and harmonious in their dealings with others (War 2.8.14 [166]), especially respectful to their elders (Ant18.13 [12]), and quite influential throughout the land of Israel (Ant13.10.5 [288]; 17.2.4 [41-45]; 18.1.3 [15])although at the time of Herod they numbered only about six thousand

The New Testament depicts the Pharisees as opponents of Jesus or the early Christians. On the other hand, they warn Jesus that his life is in danger from Herod ( Luke 13:31 ), invite him for meals ( Luke 7:36-50 ; 14:1 ), are attracted to or believe in Jesus ( John 3:1 ; 7:45-53 ; 9:13-38 ), and protect early Christians ( Acts 5:34 ; 23:6-9 ). Paul asserts he was a Pharisee before his conversion ( Php 3:5 ).

The clearest New Testament statement of Pharisaic distinctives is Acts 23:8: "The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels, nor spirits, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all." This would give the impression that doctrine was the basic concern of the group

(my thoughts are that pharisees believe they can earn their salvation through the works they do which is in direct contrast to what Christ and Paul taught.)

What amazes me is.....the Pharisees had all the writings of the Law and the Prophets which testified of Yeshua/Jesus - the Messiah.....yet, they missed Him. They missed the day of their visitation.

Pride is blindness. Humility is sight.

I don't want to be blind.........:cool: I want to see.........:geek::love:(y)

wut? So, tell me, why is the "number ONE way" number 10 on their list?

:)
Actually, I didn't read the entire list in detail and higher mathematics was never my strong suit Here is my take on numbers based on a lifetime of experience, observation, and calculation:

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do.
Two can be as bad as one,
It's the loneliest number since the number one.

Seems in our world today there are more victim groups than not.
Maybe the modern Pharisee should be a "protected class" too!!!
Talking bad about them by pointing out their flaws would probably be considered a hate crime.

How to spot a modern Pharisee
You may be a modern Pharisee if you....
1. Tout how spiritual you are in public.
2. Criticize others who are not in your clique.
3. Be a part of a clique.
4. Point out other peoples flaws. (You really should get that log out of your own eye first)
5. Gossip and talk down about others because it makes you feel superior.
6. Call other people unflattering names for the same reason.
7. Push your opinion or conviction but ignore commands like 'love one another'.
8. Ignore people when they are truly in need, especially if it doesn't fit your agenda.
9. Talk a good game but really never put it into practice.
And the number one way to spot a pharisee or to determine if you are a Pharisee is...
10. Wanting everyone to think your above reproach when you are filled with the same lust and errors as the ones you condemn.
#3 is #1 imo

Not all Pharisees were bad in Jesus day, 3 noteworthy, Paul, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. Perhaps is was the same in that day as it is now, we shouldn't be so quick to paint with a broad brush. Even the one sitting next to you in the pew does not have the exact beliefs as you do. (you, generally speaking not you the OP)

When Jesus said they had the best seats I wonder if hes meaning they were right up front near the pulpit or the ones that had cushions. Maybe the rabble had to sit on the floor?

In modern day, would it be the person thats got the corner office in the church, apart from the secretaries swively chair?

I would have to disagree with you about Paul. Paul was of course Saul and as Saul the Pharisee he wreaked havoc on the church, so yeah he was a bad Pharisee.
Again this is not about ancient Pharisees. This is about the modern version.
