Being about my Fathers business

JEsus famously said this when he was lost for about three days in Jerusalem when he was 12 years old. His parents found him in the temple teaching.

Lets discuss, How about you, do you take after your parents busines...if they had one what was it? Or did you take a different path. Do people these days do what their dads do? Or if you are a parent do you want your sons and daughters to carry on with your business, or make their own way?

What career guidance have you had, or havent had in your life that has helped or hindered you today.

Recall that Jesus earthly dad Jospeh was a carpenter, and so he learned what his dad did. Are you teaching your children your trade and everything you know or do you just tell them to find someone else to teach them? Do you take after your parents at all?

in todays world we tend to learn from school and not from our parents, yes some are home schooled. but majority learn from others

I really didn't have any career guidance either from parents or school so I joined the military. After my service ended I just went with the flow.

Is it because parents just dont want to teach their children anymore.
I'm often puzzled about that. I didnt really receive any guidance either.

Its funny I have met few people that take after their fathers/dads its very rare that I see that in terms of what they do for a living.

I guess thats why you dont see many dynasties anymore. Im wondering if dads just dont want to pass on everything they have to their sons and daughters anymore. Maybe cos they dont have anything they see worthwhile to pass on, or their offspring dont want an inheritance or want to do something different.

But this is very different from our Father God who calls us his sons and daughters and regards us as heirs to His kingdom....

I don't necessarily think that it's the parents that don't want to pass anything on, but rather the lazy new generation. Many of the kids (I'm talking my age), have grown up with such an entitlement to everything, but very low work ethic. It doesn't mean the same thing to be a hard worker anymore. It's truly sad. There are many important professions that are going to be in dire need.

Personally, my parents (mostly dad) required me to continue to go to school because it was something he didn't do, so I chose something I love, but is different that what my parents do.

My dad really hoped that my brothers would carry on his profession (building homes), but my brothers are the prime example of the generation I mentioned above. They work as little as possible and have no desire to hold a job. It's not at all important or meaningful to them. It's sad.

What do they do instead?

I think the world has changed and many of the professions our parents are in children dont see a future in. May they just want to explore and try things, then be locked in to what their parents did.

Had this friend in High school, both her parents were doctors and she was always asked if she would be one too. I think she got tired of this question, she did go on to university as she was very smart, had a photographic memory and everything. She ended up going into genetics. I think your parents can open doors for you that nobody else can though.

Had a friend whos mother was a high school teacher. In science. So daughter studied science too, but she didnt want to work in a lab, and ended up becoming a primary school reliever.

Because my parents always worked for others and didnt own their own businesses there was nothing to hand down. I did work with my mum one summer at the factory. I once asked dad for a job at the newspaper where he worked, but nothing came of it. I think at the time i thought well my dad works there, and if I worked there too I could get a ride with him. Lol. It doesnt work like that. They made heaps of people rdeundant when computers came in. My dad found anoher job at the post. But honestly, cant really do what my parents did, I would be so bored. I could sort parcels, but not for years and years.

My dad didnt want to do what his parents did, which was own a fruit shop. He rebelled and ran away and worked for the paper.

I think if your parents had a vocation and loved what they do, they would want to pass that on to their children if interested. But if they dont, its like get an education and figure out what you want to do. Which is great, cos in the olden days not everyone could get an education so you were stuck doing what your parents did

You are correct in saying that today's kids that are entering the workforce, in general, have a poor work ethic. They think that they can show up when they feel like it, leave early, call in sick constantly, and do the bare minimum necessary to keep their job. I see it all of the time. Total disgrace. Lazy? You bet. Clueless too.

Hello! I agree that the elders are not teaching the young how to be an integral part of productive society today! I also agree that the " Melliuninals" are lazy. Technology has benefited some ppl and caused others to become non productive! Jesus was speaking about"HIS FATHER'S BUSINESS" as preparing Himself to be the ultimate final sacrifice for the sins of the world. When He began His true mission,He never worked as a carpenter again! I think these elders and these millenials are directly related to each other, the apple doesnt fall far from the tree.

Thankully when we are born again those family ties are cut we become part of Gods family and He calls us to do His will.
