Hey everyone.

I have a question.

I went to a place recently and purchased a beverage and upon checking my receipt, I found they had given me a 10% discount which made me feel conflicted.

How would you respond in the situation? Would you chalk it up as favor? Or would you talk to them about it?

My gut reaction was that I should let them know I’m not comfortable receiving the discount, because I feel I shouldn’t have been given it (it says 10% online discount).

It could be costing the company money if discounts are being given when they shouldn’t. I couldn’t say what the motive is behind me getting the discount either, though it is a place I do go to on an occasion.

Then again, it could be encouraged for them to give out a discount here and there to encourage loyalty. I just don’t know.

To add, this place does have a loyalty program where after you spend x amount of money, you get a coupon for x amount off

many on-line sites offer and give discounts for first-time-customers' they simply want you to
'feel good' and 'COME-BACK' - one should have ZERO twinge of conscience over this manipulation!

If you have trouble receiving a 10% discount you would probably have even more confliction when a store offers a 'buy one get one' on selected products. OK, you bought a beverage that was on sale for 10% off. That's really nothing to lose sleep over. What's your take on coupons? Personally, I rarely use them but if I had a smart phone with a coupon app I would probably be more inclined to do so. Not worth my time to clip or print a coupon for 10 cents off a can of tomato soup.

UPDATE

So I did go back and let them know I believed I received a discount in error, and I attempted to pay the difference but was informed that their loyalty program wasn’t working correctly, so they decided to give out 10% discounts to anyone who uses their loyalty program.

The reason it bothered me was because I wasn’t aware of it and I didn’t think I met any qualifications logically to have it given to me. I went through the drive-thru and hadn’t ordered anything online.

Coupons are fine. They’re approved by the company and sent out/given out to bring in business. My dilemma was more of a “is this a company decision, or a personal decision?”

I get uncertain about little things like this from time to time. I just wanna make sure I’m doing what’s right. There definitely could be a perspective I’m missing. Thank you for your input so far.
