An Emo getting a bit Emo?
Say it ain't so.

You came here, of your own will, and asked people for their opinions on this topic.
I didn't go looking for you and just randomly start picking on you about your social group.

You came here, to us, by your own free will, and asked people for their opinions.

You are now getting opinions.

It is unreasonable to ask complete strangers for their opinions, and then when some of their opinions don't like up with your own, start throwing attitude like THEY did something wrong. THEY are merely doing exactly what YOU ASKED FOR.

Don't ask us for a thing, and then get upset when we give you the thing.

Emo Example?

Alright, let's just deal with the elephant in the room... this whole conversation may, in itself, be a fair example of the "stereotypical" emo mentality.
Emos are stereotypically known to be self-absorbed, overly sensitive, and unable to handle criticism.
Problems with criticism... that's starting to ring a bell.
Where did I see that recently... hmmm.

Look, I see no problem with liking a particular fashion style, or musical taste, or art, or poetry, or whatever relatively benign things emos may be into.
That's fine.
It's all fine.
But if you want to join a group so you can be surrounded by people who are overly emotional, lack self control, and spend all their time engaged in the purely self-centered activity of discussing how "mean the rest of the world is"... that seems like an unwise choice.
That seems counter productive and unbiblical.

* The bible actually tells us NOT to get overly emotional about every little thing, but rather to exercise self control.
* The bible also tells us to choose our friends wisely, and that we become like the people we hang around.

There are genuine REASONS for us to be concerned about you, and about your social group.

If your emo friends are just boring suburban kids with too much eyeliner... that's fine.
But if they're unstable (which is where the emo culture has its roots) then we have reason to be concerned.

Not all bad news

Alright, now let's look at the positive side of things.

Maybe your emo group isn't really very "emo", and they're all perfectly stable emotionally.
That's great.
Or maybe I'm just wrong about everything.
That's even better.
But on the other hand, you wouldn't be here for just no reason... if you didn't have concerns, you wouldn't be here.

That means you're concerned, and you're really giving your life some serious introspective thought.

And THAT means you've got some real depth, and you have some really great qualities.
That's fantastic.

And ya know, if people are all here discussing this stuff with you, it means a lot of people are interested in your well being, and genuinely want you to be well and do well... that can't be all bad either.

Final Thoughts:

1. I think it's fantastic that you're going on a mission trip. I mean that sincerely. You have all my support and respect for that.

2. I don't dislike you, and I don't think ill of you just because you might just possibly be doing some "dumb teenager things"... we all did dumb teenager things.

3. If the worst thing you're doing is hanging out with some overly emotional and self-absorbed teens... then that's probably a lot better than most of us did in our teen years.

4. No one here dislikes you. No one here thinks you're stupid, or thinks you're a bad person. But it's still possible you're making some mistakes which the older crowd can see more clearly than you can. It is entirely possible that people who are older and wiser, are in fact, ACTUALLY OLDER AND WISER.
:)

5. And we didn't get older and wiser by being perfect... we got older and wiser by making LOTS OF MISTAKES.
:)

6. IF you are in fact making mistakes, then we'd like to see you avoid those mistakes. That's all.

That's the bottom line.

.
It seems your ranting, condescending, scolding tone didnt hit home with the teenage girl. Imagine that.

Lol. Yes, being "emo" is wrong for everyone. This girl could've been beautiful, if she wasn't so emo-cised.

Granted the moon outfit (which isn't really an emo thing, by the way) is a bit silly, but she still is a beautiful woman.
Just because something doesn't match your personal taste doesn't make it 'wrong'. And since your only argument is that your subjective view of a woman is lessened by what you think is an emo look actually discredits your argument. I mean really? That's your best argument? Emo is bad because i don't like the way the women look? Laughable.
By the way, this looks more goth than emo. And, yes, there is a difference. So your argument uses a picture you misapplied the term emo to as well. It seems your statement is falling apart bit by bit.

From your tone, I don't think you really understand what "emo" is. Being "emo" means wearing black; putting on black (or at least dark) lipstick, makeup and nail-polish if you're a girl; getting a bizarro hairstyle that looks worse than if you just didn't bother brushing at all; dyeing your hair black; wearing black/dark eye-shadow and eye-liner to exaggurate these features; and walking around with a sad expression on your face.

It's often confused with looking goth to the uninitiated, but Goths often have symbolism relating to the devil, demons or death. Emo symbolism is admittedly much nicer than Goth. Emos have a tendency to attract one's sympathy, Goths a tendency to attract one's revulsion.

So your argument uses a picture you misapplied the term emo to as well. It seems your statement is falling apart bit by bit.
I assert that my argument stands and it is yours that fell apart even as you assembled it, as you clearly had an incorrect understanding of what being "emo" truly is. I mean, you couldn't even post a picture to demonstrate how wrong I was, if I really was as wrong as you indicated (which I seriously doubt). (Hint: A picture is worth a 1000 words!)

However, although I strongly disagree with your argument, I do appreciate you taking the time to put across your alternative theory.

It depends on what exactly we're talking about when it comes to emo. It's not a one size fits all term.

I'll just say that dressing emo is not wrong & neither is listening to "emo" music. If we're drifting into certain behaviors associated with being emo, then that's another discussion, but being emo doesn't mean that they're doing those things.

And no, emos do not have to dress in black. There's a difference between the music/style side of emo and the emotional side; being sad, depressed etc. As someone who used to be into the style, I can assure you it's not one and the same.

Also, that girl is pretty. I love her makeup.

Okay. If being emo isn't all about wearing black and looking sad, what is it about then? I've spotted quite a number of emos in my life, and I'm pretty sure its all about dressing black and looking sad. And by the way, these people are not goths. I know goths, and I like emos better.

Also, if the girl in the picture wore some normal clothes, washed the shoe-polish out of her hair and cleaned the blackness off of her fingernails, lips and eyes, I can understand you saying she's pretty - Bruce Wayne - or should I say, Batman? :) No offense intended, by the way.

Oh, I take no offense about the girl. We all view beauty differently. I actually love black lipstick & nails on girls. That stereotype definitely exists though, but it's not all emos. It isn't limited to sad or teenagers wearing Hot Topic. They're humans too who feel a multitude of emotions, even if some feel or express it more than others.

see not all emos are bad you never know whats going on in someones head ya we dress weird and arnt happy all the time but still were humens too.
But don't you think it's likely that the particular emo you showed is the exception, not the rule? She seems so happy I'm even having doubts that she is truly emo. I mean, her hair isn't even shoe-polished, and although blue, it's in a respectable style. Perhaps she was emo once, but is recovering?

I always thought of Bruce Wayne as more Gothic than Emo. All those bats, and pointy bits on his mansion. Did I misjudge you, Bruce?

Lol. Does one lose points for bad spelling, or are you having me on? If true, it now makes sense why people complain when I give them the red-circled-crosses.
The thumbs down, bad spelling, angry and a few other icons give negative points. And EVERYBODY hates getting red X's.. lol

And thank you for changing it. :) (y)
