Would these be similar, to look at scripture with inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning. which would be correct.
I have heard of these too. How do you interpret those methods?

I would say that the "appeal to time, history, and culture" is an essential part needed to give meaning to the text. So my view is that the legitimacy of hermeneutics is not the problem. The problem is when hermeneutics becomes disconnected from the Holy Spirit.

Another problem (which I think you may be hinting at) is when the application of the text to our daily lives is not talked about. Doing only exegetical hermeneutics to find correct doctrine becomes stale and useless if the faith is not lived out. Any unbeliever can give mental assent to a list of doctrines just as well as a seasoned, mature saint of God can.

However, a person must understand the meaning of the verse before the proper application can be found. Otherwise your application may be coming out of wrong doctrinal premises.
Amen, Trying to figure out what the author was saying is one thing

Trying to apply it in our lives is another.. We can not do one wihtout the other. Sadly to many churches leave out the second part.

It can ever be deductive reasoning because deductive reasoning always begins with an already present theory or set of beliefs in the mind of the reader who then begins to search scripture for proof texts to defend those beliefs. Always start with scripture and allow the text to influence the mind. This is dangerous because we typically do not want our already established beliefs to be threatened by scripture.

Well they are not the only way there’s abductive reasoning and a few others. I think this vid is a good interpretation
Abductive reasoning would depend on where your stating point was in your search for an answer. Is it scripture, or is it logic and human rationalization.

Well if someone doesn’t want their established belief to be threatened by scripture then they probably aren’t being open to change. not saying what they believe is not correct but what they believe could be incorrect as well. I don’t think people start reading the Bible and know all facts right out the gate.

Now I have to go look up the definition of hermaneutics...
HERMENEUTICS = BIBLE INTERPRETATION

Not sure what "generalization" means, unless it means that the Bible is generally true. Or should we say invariably true?

For example the whole universe was created in six days. how do people come to that conclusion?

In that case most posters would fit into that category. There are some who have been so strongly indoctrinated that it is equivalent to brainwashing.

Which of these methods do you feel is the most reliable approach for reading scripture? Anyone???
Reading? or Studying? Two very different tasks! :)

I assume you mean studying. Both have their place, though a hermeneutical approach will lead to deeper understanding with broader applicability.

That is so simple, even a child could come to that conclusion.

For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. (Exodus 2:11 -- From the Ten Commandments).

Literal interpretation.

But many do not agree. So they take it as a symbol (each day not being a morning and evening)

So which one is right?

See post 13 for definition of terms.
So what you are saying -- which is true -- is that everything is not explicitly stated, and that many things are implied. Also, that the whole tenor of Scripture leads to some general conclusions.

The problem today with many is that they want everything stated explicitly. And they are bound to be disappointed.
