Coal towns fear becoming ghost towns with plan to shut plants down

All coal-fired power plants in Canada must shut down by 2030, as part of Canada’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions. But the coal mining towns that rely on the business for jobs fear they’ll become ghost towns and want the federal government to help. Heather Yourex-West reports.

I hope the govmt cares enough to find financial solution to the dilemma. It's a good thing to do action re emissions but if they don't figure out a way to compensate the people then it puts a bad name on what they are doing, imo.

Some of the coal is used in steel making so they won't be shutting coal production totally - this is from the gov website:

Coal is used for electricity generation, the manufacturing of steel and cement, and various industrial and residential applications. Canada produced 61 Mt of coal in 2017, of which 56% is metallurgical coal used for steel manufacturing and 44% thermal coal used for electricity.

In Canada, 9% of electricity is generated with coal. Electricity generation consumed 34.4 Mt in 2016, a 5% decrease from 36.2 Mt in 2015.

With the phasing out of coal-fired electricity by the Government of Canada, energy produced by coal will be eliminated by 2030. That said, coal will continue to be used for metallurgical processes.

The federal government can help by not shutting the coal-fired power plants. It will take years to actually build functioning power plants to replace the ones that are to be shut down. This is not going to happen by 2030. Towns that rely on the present power plant structure should be in fear of government interference.
