They may have rented a house in Bethlehem after a short stay in the inn, then left for Egypt. Later on they returned to Nazareth and settled there.
True that, but they did have a house in Nazareth it seems, IMO which brings up the question of wealth, with the two turtle doves etc.

Then there’s this that doesn’t quite fit the flee to Egypt and back to Nazareth

Lk2:39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.

Unless it’s Luke writing style, it’s seems he would paraphrase

I’ve found that all four books at times paraphrase John does it here for an example.

John 12
14Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written:

this is quite more to the story in other books but in John it’s short and simple.

I guess a cave could be called a house, many call a cardboard box home.

Though I wonder how the cave part came about, what was the conclusion that lead to it being a cave interesting
Justin Martyr may have been the perpetrator of this cave idea, I don"t know. Anyways he said it may have been beneath the Inn in the side of a hilll.. But then again, maybe speculation. :dunno:

Hmm seem a little stretched to be a cave, could be looking at a photo of the city which was no doubt a lot smaller, to me the hill doesn’t seem to be cavity ridden though it could be, looks pretty solid hill side though. I’m not much on the terrain around the area and beneath it, are there a lot of caves around Bethlehem?

hmm now I know where the cave dogma comes from catholic

The stable where Mary and Joseph spent the night of Jesus’ birth was most likely much like the cave at the shepherd’s field. That cave is beneath the Church of the Nativity, which was first built around AD 327 by Constantine the Great and his mother St. Helena to honor the birth of Our Lord. This cave is accessible to pilgrims by stepping down a short set of stairs to a grotto beneath the altar of the main sanctuary of the church. A metal star surrounded by marble slabs marks the spot of the blessed event, but in other parts of the grotto, the cave walls are still visible, although covered with tapestries in most places.

i thought this was going to be about encouraging the brothers and sisters not to be fools, but to highly value wisdom above all the vain things we admire in this modern age

Not sure who you are addressing but I would say the integrity of God's Word is what really matters. Sorry I used a 'petty' example but it is the little foxes that spoil the vine. Song Sol 2:15

I asked this question in another thread becasue I just wanted to know how long Jesus spent in egypt, did they go right after his birth or what. Cos Luke doesnt mention it at all after Jesus birth but MAtthew does.

Also kind of strange that if theyd been presented at the temple and Herod was there he could have killed Jesus then by just enquiring had any babies been presented at the temple. But it would seem it was sometime after Jesus was born that the wise men reached Herod. Anyway after herod died they didnt go back to judea but settled in nazareth. But doesnt say how long that was...

Why is it important, well, everything about Jesus is important to a christian I suppose. Did he ever ecnounter these wise men again? Who knows...maybe they have a special place in heaven. I was thinking they would have been gentiles too, and possibly similar to a person like Balaam who was godfearing but not an israelite obviously.
