They stretched that one out waaaaaaaay too long. It would have been funny if it had been shorter.
I think that was the whole point of it lol

Yes I noticed the host of the (alleged) show chuckle every time the person telling the joke came out with a new name. I figured it was part of the act, part of the character role the joke teller was portraying. It still would have been funny if it had been shorter. I am going to steal this... er, "appropriate" this joke and modify it.

And that poor show really needs to find better acts. If they're THAT desperate to fill air time...

So I'm riding on the subway and you know how people will be reading a newspaper and leave it on the seat, then people sit on the seat without bothering to remove the newspaper, because who wants to spend his whole life cleaning up other people's messes, right? So I'm riding the subway and I happen to be sitting on a seat that has a newspaper. This guy walks up to me and says, "Excuse me, are you reading that?" He apparently wanted to read the paper. What could I say, "I'm nearsighted"? I just stood up and handed him the paper.

Next time it happened, a week and a half later, I was ready. I was sitting on a subway seat, on a newspaper, and somebody came up to me and said, "Excuse me sir, are you reading that?" I said "yes," stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

I guess Norm is an acquired taste. He and Conan have a good rapport. Conan brings him on quite often, especially if the other guest he has on is a bore. There's a number of other jokes he has that are also good but probably wouldn't be appropriate here.
