Need a knife? lol

Seriously though, I am not sure if you just mean abstinence in a single sense, marriage sense, or temptation sense. Context would be needed. If you're speaking of single (and ready to mingle, haha) I would say that God tells us to approach the throne of grace in time of need (as the temptation presents itself). Enter the throne room, pray, and ask for the grace and mercy to resist. God will give you the escape. In this respect, you have to want sanctification and liberty, to actually desire deliverance.

umm - don't have intercourse (with another living being)...
Have faith, work hard, and cold showers... lol
I find that keeping the brain busy elsewhere, excretion from activity and sleep deprivation are helpful...
and lots of prayers for his strength for will-power...
and if your alone - makes it easier of course...

How to abstain from sex according in the Bible?
Don't do it.

How to abstain from stealing. Don't do it.

How to abstain from being greedy. Don't do it.

The truth is it all depends on how much you love the Lord, for we are to love the Lord more than doing sin.

And there is no struggling with sin, only not submitting to the Spirit, for a Spirit led life has crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts, so their desire is to do good, and do not care about evil.

Which the Bible says that some have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof, and are lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.

So they like to sin, so they do not allow the Spirit to lead them, although they will say they have the Spirit, but many are relaxed in how they are supposed to conduct themselves, and think they are alright.

But we should never act holier than thou, and sex appears to be one of the biggest sins that tempts many people that are not married, or married and cheat.

It appears that the love of money is the biggest sin that tempts people, for people would rather have a lot of money than sex.

Which the Bible says the love of money is the root of all evil, not the love of sex is the root of all evil.

If people were on the same level money wise, and material wise, and prestige wise, a lot of people that are together today in relationships would not be together, for it is money, and material things, and prestige, that is the biggest determining factor in why people are together.

Because the world, and the flesh, is based on self exaltation, which sex does not exalt them like money, and material things, and prestige.

It used to be a lot easier. Nowadays with the way people are dressing and with the media, TV, ads, everything being so FULL OF IT, its a lot more difficult.
But it can be done.

Crucifying the flesh with its passions and desires. Practical application would be: staying busy, doing some physical labor, and honoring God.
The thing is that if you love God enough, you will not do something that would jeopardize your relationship with God or something that would grieve the Spirit within you. You wouldn't want to do that, its not worth it.

I would also like to speak from experience here: Fulfilling the lusts of the flesh is a NEVER ENDING rat race. You will NEVER be satisfied, let me guarantee you that. (hence why it gets WORSE and WORSE, as it is with all sins, they get progressively worse, until they DESTROY you).

Pardon me for going on a 'Too long didnt read' mode here. But you name me the sin and i'll tell you how it gets progressively worse. Every addict in the world knows how this works. You start off puffing a cigarette a bit growing up, then you get into alcohol, its all fun and parties, you try a bit of this a bit of that, just to party you know, and faster than you can say "im not an addict" you are out there on the streets doing God knows what to fuel your addiction. And it went from a simple cigarette to serious stuff.
Same thing with what the OP is describing, if you 'give in', the easier it is to give in the next time, and then you want something different, something 'more' to get the same rush. Next thing you know, you are either in TROUBLE or in a register somewhere or you got AIDS.

Remember, ALL sin is negative. I know im preaching to the choir here, but I decided to write this just in case someone who isnt registered reads this. I want to WARN THEM to NOT mess their life up with sin, whether its narcotics or promiscuous activity, DONT LET THE DEVIL RUIN YOUR LIFE.
Sin will NOT make you happy, take a look at those weirdos in hollywood, always committing suicide one after another, substance abuse issues, all kinds of messed up lives those 'succesful' people have. You know why they are so miserable? Because SIN.

Matthew 5:29-30
29 If your right eye causes you to [a]sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to [b]sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

This is one way Jesus says to solve that problem.....

How to not find yourself in temptation is the key. I have a maxim that works, " Don't go stupid place, with stupid people, to do stupid stuff". In your case how to live that out would be, don't go to the night club with all your single buddies and drink and dance to the late hours. You ain't gonna abstane long that way. Some sweet thang will come flaggin and waggin and you gonna fall betwixt the sheets.
So enough of what not to do. Now for what to do. Go to prayer meetings, Bible studies, and as many Christian events as reasonable. Go to work in the day and work yourself tired. Go to the gym and work out, pray yourself to sleep. Wake up early watch the sun rise with your favorite Bible program on the radio, and a cup off coffee in your hand. Seek the majesty of our lord in all that you see. Hands busy about good work don't do dumb stuff and minds focused on God don't get focused on what we might be missing.
I fail when I am too tired, too lonely, and too hungry.

Your eyes and ears are the outer battlements. Decide what not to watch and hear. "Whatever is good, whatever is pure... think on these things" (Philippians 4:8).

How to abstain from sex according in the Bible?
1 Corinthians 7
1 Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

Take touching out of the relationship. If you can't do that, get married.

I suspect that there might just be lots of context being lost in translation here...

How? If you don't touch, fornication is not an issue. If you don't start drinking, you won't get drunk.
Well, the OP was a bit vague, so it is unclear of numerous plausible scenarios that could be the basis for this specific inquiry.
If he intends to attend the seminary to become a Catholic priest, for example, a black and white solution, as you suggest, is perfectly applicable.
If he is married, widowed or his spouse is away for some reason, again the black and white approach is applicable. A husband has no reason to touch another woman, save for a couple possible exceptios, such as greetings.
If he is otherwise single and not dating, in most cultures dancing is perfectly innocent form of touching.
If he is single and dating hopeful for a relationship... Touching of hands, dancing and hugs are perfectly normal means to demonstrate your emotional connection...
If he is in a relationship and hopes to win her heart and convince her that he is worth marrying, touching is highly encouraged, and his restraint is the issue...

Do not have sex before marriage. After marriage only abstain for a time if you both agree for purposes of prayer and fasting
And of course for menstruation, healing after child birth, medical reasons, etc.

Or just remain unmarried and celibate for life.
