Discipline is important. Not sure about the old fashioned.
For example spare the rod, spoil the child"was used for beating kids with switches (aka sticks). It's referring to a Shepherd leading their sheep!
You don't want to be an authoritative parent and you don't want to be a permissive parent either. Both of these parenting techniques could be considered abusive and definitely don't work. Strict parents create rebellious kids and" friend" parents create ungrateful and impulsive kids. Firm, but fair is the best approach and actually raises the happiest kids.
The "type" of discipline actually does not matter as much as how it's being implemented (within reason of course). Although fair consequences tend to be more logical. You break it, you fix it attitude.
