This earthquake today M5.7 was similar to the much larger one (M7.1) that occurred on January 24, 2016, which also occurred at an intermediate depth (129 km) that was "part of the extended source-region" of the M 9.3 Alaska earthquake of March 27, 1964 which occurred on the day that many Christians observe as "Good Friday." ( https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us10004gqp/executive).

According to these websites which are very technical and not easy to understand, these quakes are related to the Pacific "plate" (the earth's surface under the ocean floor) which shifts slowly Northwestward, under the earths surface (called "subduction," i think), and "begins it's descent into the mantle near the Alaska-Aleutian trench", (the Aleutian trench is the deep sea floor area just south of Middleton Island I believe). The sea reaches a depth of 26,000 feet there.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of that. Isn't it nice to know we are in God's care. He's the beginning and the end.

Prayers for all on the peninsula and Anchorage too.

A bit of Alaska history:

Earthquakes near volcanic areas are especially troubling. The largest volcano in the lover 48 is in one of our greatest tourist attractions, Yellow Stone National Park.

thanks for the reassurance--seem to need it every five minutes, unless it's a good day! It was a small quake, but significant, since anything near a volcano always is--

Thanks for this! Enjoyed it very much and watched the whole video-- VERY dramatic portrayal of this area and the forces of nature here are now even more frightening after watching this. The lady looks familiar, and I had just turned age 6, and remember the sound of the freight train-- the ROAR of the quake and the house basement we were in for almost 5 minutes. We couldn't even stand up. Her story is much more dramatic though--and our families may have even known each other since we also went skiing sometimes. But I'm not sure if they are going to preserve the 4th Avenue theater. And I remember the story "The Sword and the Stone," but can't remember if i saw the movie, but do remember the book. I recall running into another lady who was in the earthquake at the VA hospital, where I went to get info about my father, and she had also.

It looks like they are calling the quake a 9.3 now? The video was an amazing dramatic way to show the powerful Pacific plate, how it goes under the earths crust at a 45 degree angle in the Aleutian Trench. And also the other dramatic stories around here, like the 747 that had all four engines quit in the ash cloud. I'm really glad it had a happy ending after hearing the alarm of the pilot on the radio recording-- those engines didn't have to re-start, but, they got two going--enough to land safely. I'd like to watch the documentary of the 747 too if you have it? there are so many dramatic good aviation stories here too, in-spite of the tragedies--like life; gotta focus on the good too.
And the University of Alaska-Fairbanks interviews were very exciting and interesting about the volcanoes and glaciers. Those people are amazing-- Only glaciologists could stand in a melting ice tunnel and calmly describe how it was melting! And a volcano expert describe a major eruption as "exhilarating to see!" from the air, then just landing safely before the airport closes.
I remember also the story of the Alaska native man describing how he and his father survived the Lituya Bay wave in their fishing boat. And the two guys who hiked into the glacier with the $4,000 camera drone, and the guy told the one who crashed it, it was only fair that he go into the cave to get it.

And, I was just thinking about this today or last night, remembering Thanksgiving how North America in general is subject to such powerful forces of nature, like Florida and the hurricanes, and California, and all the west coast. But, how that Canada and America are blessed with having the resources to build safe housing and infra-structure.
Japan, another area of horrifying earthquakes and tsunami's, also have modern buildings. The reactor was built very well, they just never anticipated a wave of that size in the huge 9.0+? quake in recent years

On a serious note, though, I agree with the warning that a major volcano event could be imminent, but I'm not sure how the two quakes near Illiamna volcano would effect that, whether they released energy or created it? And I think from what I've read that nearby Mt. Redoubt is the one with the mega-tsunami danger. I think I will check into that. Anchorage should seriously be on the alert this winter due to these increasing dangers of faults building up. There are 5 volcanoes across the bay or the Cook Inlet here. I would definitely say from here, from a Christian view, considering the urgency of late, that some kind of major, massive event could be, or I would even say, "I believe this is imminent."

I believe in the warning of the Psalms:
The Lord reigns,
let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let the earth shake. (Psalm 99:1; NIV)

and also the scientists concur due to a periodic slowing of the earth's rotation, especially in 2018--
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/nov/18/2018-set-to-be-year-of-big-earthquakes

And there is a good teaching on Psalm 98 and the return of Christ at this website:
https://bible.org/seriespage/christmas-2015-joy-world-psalm-98
"The coming of Jesus Christ as Savior, King, and Judge is a cause of great joy for all the earth."
(Stephen J. Cole, Th.M.)

Also, just discovered today that there have been a lot of earthquakes along the Pacific Rim today also.

https://nypost.com/2018/08/22/ring-of-fire-hit-with-70-earthquakes-in-just-48-hours/
"The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad;
Let the distant shores rejoice." (Psalm 97:1; NIV; biblegateway.com)

"The seas have lifted up, Lord,
the seas have lifted up their voice;
the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea—
the Lord on high is mighty." (Psalm 93:3; NIV; biblegateway.com)

You're welcome. :)
I'm thinking the tectonic plate shift could have a layered effect across the peninsula maybe. Opening the subterranean vault so as to compound any outpouring of the volcano itself. Or, perhaps there are other volcanoes in the region that would be affected due to that tectonic plate shift. There are more than 40 active volcanoes in Alaska.

I forgot to mention Yellowstone-- never been there, but would love to go, and also, I've never seen the Grand Canyon.
Could you explain more the "layered effect," and opening the subterranean vault, and what does "compound the outpouring of the volcano mean? And, yes, there are five volcano's across the Cook Inlet, Mt. Redoubt is to the north of Illiamna, and Augustine is to the south, and Mt. Spurr is north of Augustine. Can't remember which are active off hand--maybe all of them? I can't recall off-hand, but I think I read that Redoubt is the dangerous one as far as Tsunami's, but, when I lived in Kenai near the ocean, you could see Mt. Redoubt, right across the Bay, and it always made me think of doing the opposite-- don't RE-Doubt... Re-faith!! but, not in an eruption--
It's pretty scary here right now, in my opinion, with a quake due near Anchorage in a shallow fault, and the plate shifting here again, it's way over my head to understand plate tectonics. When it shifts, it puts pressure somewhere else, which seemed to happen with the 5.7 here. The next quake after that listed in the "significant earthquakes," or near 6.0 was east of New Zealand-- a 5.9, some 2,000 miles east, so it looked like when the plate shifted north, it also caused things at the southern edge, directly to the South. and the faults on the west edge with Australia, New Zealand and Japan and Indonesia are interactive? with the plate shifting west?

All we can do really, is to always be ready for any events, especially in winter here. So, I'm going to try and practice what I preach and stock up a bit on vital necessities.
I'm not sure either what's happening with all the increased activity in the Pacific Rim, and what happened with that? But, if the Pacific plate shifts to the North and West, wouldn't that increase the pressure on the eastern edge? And what does the moon-gravity connection do? or the tidal shifts? It's all very captivating, frightening and unusual with the slowing effect of the earth's rotation--
The math works, really for a major event of biblical epic proportions.
It's just good sense, if you live near the ocean to take basic safety precautions.
And as always, the Lord calls us to be ready spiritually.
Instead of living by fear, live by faith, which is getting easier day by day, in my own life, and to face realities like natural and spiritual upheavals, storms, and life's battles and wars.
Foxholes tend to wake you up pretty fast.
The inner battle is the important one to win first;
And rest in that victory that only a power greater than ourselves can win it, and help us to do the same.
Knowing which is the right battle is key to winning it.
As people, we are prone to stay on the gerbil wheel.
Those are designed for lemmings.
Not sons and daughters of the Lord--warriors of the spiritual realm!

I'm thinking of Psalm 119, as I fight my own issues--
"HELP ME, LORD!!"
And PETER ON THE WAVES!!
"LORD, SAVE ME!!"
Would we learn those lessons in some boring, lukewarm, stable world??
THANK GOD WE LIVE IN A WORLD LIKE THIS!!
Nothing could be more perfectly imperfect!
The weaker we may experience, the greater God's power!
The more unstable the world, the more we appreciate being rescued!!
JESUS SAID!! :
"MY STRENGTH/POWER IS PERFECTED IN HUMAN WEAKNESS."
HIS GRACE IS ENOUGH! if we are humble enough to receive it and believe it!
I may think I'm great until I realize the throne for man is in the locker room.
I may think I'm great and powerful shifting a car--
or shifting a keyboard.
THE LORD CAN SHIFT TECTONIC PLATES.
THE LORD CAN SHIFT THE HEAVENS.
AND,
"THE LORD IS COMING TO JUDGE THE EARTH!" (Psalm 96&98)
Does that matter to us!?
Do we matter to God? And what we do in this life!?
Ask the Lord Himself on the cross.
Ask those people in Heaven or Hell.
If we want to fly like an eagle;
We can't do that feeling sorry for ourselves in bed;
And trying to raise ourselves out of it on our own power.
That didn't work for me for over 50 years.
What did John the Baptist say, a true and worthy prophet?
He was not worthy to carry the LOrd's sandals as a slave.
What did Jesus say? and John the Baptist?
TURN FROM OURSELVES AND THE WORLD, AND TURN TO GOD;
FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS NEAR!

Jesus began His ministry with this same message of John the Baptist.
It is especially true today.
TODAY IS THE DAY OF SALVATION.
RIGHT NOW.
THIS HOUR.
THIS MINUTE.
THIS HEARTBEAT.
NOT TOMORROW.
OUR LIVES ARE A FRAGILE AS A CANDLE.
EVERYONE IS ALWAYS ONE HEARTBEAT AWAY FROM ETERNITY, EVEN THOUGH WE NEVER THINK ABOUT IT.

I haven't yet visited the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone myself. Video's just don't do them justice. But one day.

Here are a series of videos that elaborate on my lay explanation of plate tectonic shifts opening the subterranean lava vaults and with particular interest in underground volcanoes. Fascinating stuff >>>>LINK
Man imagines we have dominion over all things that walk, crawls, swims, or flies. But God insures we are humbled by nature herself from time to time.

Thank-you again for the helpful information. I don't have time right now to check into all of it, but this short video looks pretty credible, that shows that the Juan De Fuca Pacific plate is the one to watch, rather than the San Andreas fault. Another video showed that the San Andreas movie was not accurate based on good science. There are a lot of theories.
At least the Bible is not a theory.
You are right. If nature doesn't humble us, life will...

Im suirprised no one has mentioned the one that just hit this morning, a 7.0

https://www.foxnews.com/us/alaska-e...ay-but-infrastructure-damage-is-another-story
That 7.0 occurred here 6 days after this, in a shallow fault some 5-8 miles north of Anchorage:

"It's pretty scary here right now, in my opinion, with a quake due near Anchorage in a shallow fault, and the plate shifting here again, it's way over my head to understand plate tectonics. When it shifts, it puts pressure somewhere else, which seemed to happen with the 5.7 here. The 7.0 unnerved me quite a bit, since I'm always hyper-vigilant when it comes to quakes. I drifted back to sleep, and thought I heard a friendly guardian angel suggesting that was not a good idea, and was really jolted awake by the 7.0 here, that they are saying was the most significant since the 1964 in terms of how severe the shaking was, and hearing same angel say, "like the 64" as I prepared to exit-- unprepared and not dressed in the winter cold, just like the Bible says NOT to do. it says somewhere, "be dressed for battle," or something like that. I'll try to look it up. All my preaching above, and for the second time, I was shaken awake, as another warning, the last time was 2014, as I heard the words, "left behind," and found that that movie was re-released a week or so later.

This is the verse I promised to look up as I almost had to exit my place when the quake hit unexpectedly in winter without winter clothing: Revelation 16:15 and an explanation found on this website by Tom:

"Look, I am coming like a thief. The one who is alert and remains clothed so that he may not go around naked and people see his shame is blessed." (Revelation 16:15; Holman Christian Standard Bible).

https://insightsfromtom.com/2014/09/09/revelation-1615-stay-clothed/

symbolic of being clothed in righteousness and readiness and spiritual armour-- sleeping in and giving place to a spirit of heaviness is compared to being naked spiritually.

I am also glad you are safe, HeraldtheNews. I didn't see you posting about this one, and I was worried either you were hurt, or had lost power and internet.

I've been reading a bit about Alaska. Something like 40,000 earthquakes a year? (Correct me if I have the numbers wrong!) Also, more earthquakes than the otehr 49 states combined. We get a few big ones in northern BC, but it is not populated where they happen. They are associated with the same plate techtonics you have. But, yours is a big more complex, with that volcanic archipelago.

Try and focus on Jesus. He will not abandon you when these quakes are bad. God bless!

I wonder if this 5.9 had anything to do with jarring loose the larger 7.0 further down the line? The subterranean vault thing you mentioned?
