Digging in with Jeremiah...

The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, to whom the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

Let's see what we can pull out of this book of Jeremiah thus far...

Jeremiah was the son of Hilkiah. He was a Priest in Anathoth, a place in the land of Benjamin. We also see that God dealt with Him during the time that Josiah was the King reigning. From previous studies we know that His Dad Amon, was the son of the wicked King of Judah, Manasseh. We learn through the book of Kings that Manasseh actually implemented child sacrifice to a false Gods, he carried out so much carnage. Even though he finally repented and was forgiven, the heinous and murderous actions he started caused consequential outcomes of destruction that set the course of what Jeremiah tormented and lamented on.

I'd welcome your study talking points on these first two verses and or more. What can you add, or am I needing correction with my understanding?

Jeremiah (the book of) is an excellent book of prophetic utterances....His name means YAHWEH will Exalt......another good study is Lamentations which was written by Jeremiah and accurately describes the destruction of Jerusalem.......

I did not know that about His name, and now I am looking more forward to lamentations.

Lamentations is very tragic.........Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet because of the misery and destruction he witnessed in Jerusalem and the pain and misery his people suffered righteously.....it was so graphic that the people resorted to cannibalism and even argued over whose son to eat first.........very tragic consequences....

Whoa, that had to be so brutal. My heart goes out to Jeremiah. It seems no other priest or prophet was so transparent with how it all affected him, still we can only imagine.

Christians should note that Jeremiah is a type of Christ (1) in his name (Heb Yirmiyahu = Yahweh will exalt), (2) in his designation by God, and (3) in his ministry. This is all evident in chapter 1.

I have often thought about Jeremiah when reading this part of the Gospels

Lament over Jerusalem
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. 38 Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! 39 For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

0h i love the book of Jeremiah...powerful book...and Jeremiah who told the Lord (im just a boy) yet God called Jeremiah to speak and do the His heart ... and the wonderful mercy and long-suffering God had in warning the people to repent...yet they did not then out of the rubble and ashes as new covenant came forth...wow praise God...He is amazing...we love you Abba our God....love in Christ Sherril...

First things first - which version of Jeremiah?

The Old Testament books are not preserved in a good condition and Jeremiah is one of books that have several totally different versions.

Some say these versions are synoptic and all inspired, some do not even know that there are more than one...
