In Rev 11v8, we read the following:

“And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.”

The phrase “the great city” in Greek is “tes poleos tes megales,” it is an emphatic phrase which calls attention to the adjective “great,” rather than the noun “city,” and so “the city, the great one.” The same construction occurs in the reference to “the tribulation, the great one,” (The Great Tribulation), “tes thlipseos tes megales” in Rev 7v14.

The phrase “the city, the great one” is also used in the following places in the The Revelation of Jesus Christ:

Rev 14v8: “And another angel followed, saying,"Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication."

Rev 16v19: “Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath.”

Rev 17v18: “And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth."

(with Rev 17v4,5: “The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”)

Rev 18v10: “standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.”

Rev 18v16: “and saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!”

Rev 18v18: “and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, 'What is like this great city?”

Rev 18v19: “They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate.”

Rev 18v21: “Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying," Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and shall not be found anymore.”

(It is also used in Rev 21v10 of The Holy Jerusalem, the Heavenly City.)

In Rev 11v8, the name “Sodom” is given to Jerusalem to show the rioting in the sins of the flesh, and the going after “strange flesh.” Dan 2v43, Gen 6v2, Jude v6, Rev 12v9, Ezek 16v45-56. The name of “Egypt” is given to Jerusalem to show that her king sets himself forth as God, and rejects all the mighty manifestations of God's power through God's servants. (e.g., the two witnesses, Rev 11v3-6). Just as in the time of Moses and Pharaoh there will be a violent conflict between the powers of good and evil. 2Tim 3v8, Matt 23v31, John 8v44.

The name of “Babylon” is given to Jerusalem to show its spiritual condition under Antichrist, it's worship of false Gods, its hatred of God, its sinful luxuries, and the extent of Antichrist's power and kingdom. Dan 2v39, Rev 17v4, 18v2,3,9-19.

Jerusalem is also described as a "harlot," for she has gone after many lovers, and like a harlot has led many into sin, when she should have been leading people to God. Isaiah 1v21.

It also says in Rev 11v8, that “the city, the great one” is the place “where also our (or “their”) Lord was crucified.”

The Lord Jesus was crucified in JERUSALEM!

So, there is only ONE conclusion that any HONEST person can come to and that is:

“The city, the great one,” which is called “Sodom,” “Egypt,” “Babylon,” and “the harlot…”

IS JERUSALEM!

That the city is not Rome under the RC church, or New York etc. etc.

It is in reality Jerusalem of the 1st century AD:

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee".

There's no need to confuse Jerusalem with Babylon. They are BOTH great cities as shown in Revelation but they are NOT identical. Please note the distinction here:

PARTIAL DESTRUCTION
And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven. (Rev 11:13)

TOTAL DESTRUCTION
Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. (Rev 18:8)

Well one city is called the great city which is spiritually Sodom and Egypt.. This will be in the future ( or already is ) Jerusalem..

And the other city is called the Great City Babylon

This leads to the possability that they are two different great end times cities.. The first one ""Sodom and Egypt"" "" is Jerusalem for sure.. But that does not mean it is the same as Babylon....

Babylon is not Jerusalem, because God is going to restore the kingdom on earth back to the Jews, and they shall know the LORD their God from that time forward, and He will never hide His face from them again.

Also by way of a 7 years peace treaty the Jews will split Jerusalem with the Palestinians.

When the 7 years period happens God is favoring the Jews, the nation of Israel, and they are protected from physical attack as a nation for the 7 years period.

And the world will attack Jerusalem, the Jews, after the 7 years period, in which Jesus will save the Jews, and the kingdom restored to the Jews.

Which the Bible says Israel is blinded in part, until salvation is no longer available to the Gentiles, and so all Israel shall be saved.

So it appears as if Jerusalem is not Babylon because God is favoring the Jews in the future, not against them, and will turn them to the truth.

Also Babylon represents all the false religions of the world.

Lived deliciously, and in pleasure, and did trade with the world.

Also the nations stand afar off for the fear her torment when she is put down by God, but if God is favoring the Jews during the 7 years period, and they are protected from physical attack during that time, and is going to restore the kingdom on earth, then how can Jerusalem be Babylon when they are not going to fall, and God is favoring the Jews.

Also in Babylon was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. which surely cannot be Jerusalem.

And God is going to send 2 witnesses to turn the nation of Israel to the truth that Jesus is their Messiah.

Babylon has great influence in the world, and the biggest player on the world scene, and did trade with the whole world, and prospered economically above all nations, and lived deliciously, and in pleasure, enjoying worldliness, and fleshy pleasures galore, and represents all the false religions of the world.

How does that apply to tiny Jerusalem, and what do we see them doing according to the course of the world in influence on the world like Babylon would do.

IS JERUSALEM!
Hello JB,

The problem with your claim is that the term "the great city" is not exclusive to a particular city. This is why it is important to consider all scripture regarding any given Biblical topic. That said, consider the following:

In Rev.17:18, the woman who rides the beast is said to be "that great city that rules over the kings of the earth."

At the time that John was receiving this information from the angel, Rome was that great city that was ruling over the kings of the earth. Consequently, Jerusalem does not now, nor has ever ruled over the kings of the earth.

Then in Rev.17:9, we are given another clue regarding the woman who is representing a city: "This calls for a mind that has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits."

So, the woman who is identified as a city, is said to be sitting on seven hills/mountains, which is speaking of her religious headquarters. As much as people attempt to proclaim it, Jerusalem does not sit on seven hills. Rome on the other hand, was built on and is famous for her seven hills.

But the most obvious reason that Jerusalem is not the great city of Revelation 17 & 18, is that the great city Mystery, Babylon, is destroyed during the last part of the tribulation period, so much so that no one will ever be able to inhabit her again, as revealed in Rev.18:21-23. That said, in Rev.20:7-9, Satan will released from the Abyss and will gather Gog and Magog who will march across the earth and surround the "camp of God's people, the city that He loves" which could only be referring to Jerusalem and which would demonstrate that Jerusalem will be inhabited during the millennial period right up to the very end. The conclusion is that, since that woman who rides the beast, which is that great city that rules over the kings of the earth, is destroyed prior to the millennial kingdom and Jerusalem is inhabited throughout the entire millennial kingdom, then they cannot be the same city.

As previously stated, the term "The great city" is not exclusive to one city, just as the word "trumpet" is not exclusive to a particular trumpet event within scripture.

The conclusion is that, the great city of Rev.11:7 which is obviously Jerusalem, is not the same great city referred to in Revelation chapters 17 & 18 and that because of the reasons previously stated.

Furthermore, according to scripture, during the millennial kingdom Jesus will be ruling from Jerusalem from the throne of king David. If Jerusalem was that great city, Babylon the great, which is destroyed just prior to the Lord's return to the earth so that no one will ever be able to inhabit her again, then the prophecy of Jesus ruling from Jerusalem could not take place.

This is not a matter of the construct of the words "“the city, the great one,” but of taking into consideration all of the related scriptures on this subject.
