In Rev 11v8, we read the following:
“And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.”
The phrase “the great city” in Greek is “tes poleos tes megales,” it is an emphatic phrase which calls attention to the adjective “great,” rather than the noun “city,” and so “the city, the great one.” The same construction occurs in the reference to “the tribulation, the great one,” (The Great Tribulation), “tes thlipseos tes megales” in Rev 7v14.
The phrase “the city, the great one” is also used in the following places in the The Revelation of Jesus Christ:
Rev 14v8: “And another angel followed, saying,"Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication."
Rev 16v19: “Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath.”
Rev 17v18: “And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth."
(with Rev 17v4,5: “The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”)
Rev 18v10: “standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.”
Rev 18v16: “and saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!”
Rev 18v18: “and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, 'What is like this great city?”
Rev 18v19: “They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate.”
Rev 18v21: “Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying," Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and shall not be found anymore.”
(It is also used in Rev 21v10 of The Holy Jerusalem, the Heavenly City.)
In Rev 11v8, the name “Sodom” is given to Jerusalem to show the rioting in the sins of the flesh, and the going after “strange flesh.” Dan 2v43, Gen 6v2, Jude v6, Rev 12v9, Ezek 16v45-56. The name of “Egypt” is given to Jerusalem to show that her king sets himself forth as God, and rejects all the mighty manifestations of God's power through God's servants. (e.g., the two witnesses, Rev 11v3-6). Just as in the time of Moses and Pharaoh there will be a violent conflict between the powers of good and evil. 2Tim 3v8, Matt 23v31, John 8v44.
The name of “Babylon” is given to Jerusalem to show its spiritual condition under Antichrist, it's worship of false Gods, its hatred of God, its sinful luxuries, and the extent of Antichrist's power and kingdom. Dan 2v39, Rev 17v4, 18v2,3,9-19.
Jerusalem is also described as a "harlot," for she has gone after many lovers, and like a harlot has led many into sin, when she should have been leading people to God. Isaiah 1v21.
It also says in Rev 11v8, that “the city, the great one” is the place “where also our (or “their”) Lord was crucified.”
The Lord Jesus was crucified in JERUSALEM!
So, there is only ONE conclusion that any HONEST person can come to and that is:
“The city, the great one,” which is called “Sodom,” “Egypt,” “Babylon,” and “the harlot…”
IS JERUSALEM!
