I have just survived a problem I did not realize could occur.

I was going online to Internet as usual when my PC kept giving me the alert that I had no connection.

This had me going for two ays. I called my provider, dsl that is, andthey knew nothing of the soluction because all my router lights came on as they should and the wifi was functioning normally.

When I ran the troubleshooter for my connection I was informed that I did not have a valid ip address, and that was really weird since I have been using this machine for seven years with no problem

A light went on in my pea brain. I recalled I had disabled my Afast av in order to install some things, and even though I did not think Ihad clicked on anyting ele, I must have. It is blow in the image of the left click menue that comes up on my takbar Avast icon.........I clicked on the indicated option and on the third day, I had my Avast back in working order.

Now I did disable Avast and the Internet became available, but I wanted my paid Avast service back, and with some pain, I fund what I had done, duhhh.

Why pay for it, when Avast has a free version? Plus it slows your 'puter down to a crawl..

Because I first had the free version I opted for the pay version....... The Browser that comes with it is worth more than anything you would pay...

The browsers default setting is to send usage and crash reports to Avast. And since it's a default you have to go digging to discover it. A negative for a security based browser.
Also I had to rid myself of Avast recently as it was causing serious problems for the last large scale W10 update. Many people had to do a fresh install of Windows, losing anything not backed up. Or, as in my case, I lost all software installs. So things that took me weeks to configure were suddenly gone. All thanks to Avast.

I am not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but Avast has been very good to me and for me.
My platform is W10, and I am current on my version There have been no problems for me in the past three years running with it. Avast is one of the top three av programs, and considering the thickness of my mental prowess, i love having it.

And my experiences have been different, which i shared.
And calling Avast one of the top three is rather subjective. Different sites have different standards for judging tops. For example PC Magazine looked at 10 paid antivirus software programs. Five of those ten got 'Editors pick', Avast was not one of them. So I could easily counter with Avast is not even in the top 5.
But, really, it's where you look. This is why, when i choose software, i check multiple sites for reviews, and not just one. TopTenReviews put it at 5th of 11. And AVG, owned by Avast, was number 11.
On Top10BestAntirivus it didn't even make the list, yet AVG did at number 9.

So this proves a claim of 'top three' isn't really a valid claim since there is no single authority on the subject. And none of the sites i checked even had it in their top five.
Which is why providing people with a balanced view (such as your support of Avast and my negative review of it) is important on such topics. If it's working for you, fine. But the issues i faced i found Many, Many others also faced. So that can't be ignored because it's your preference.

True, but this can be said about most other av programs. I have used Norton, AVG, Macafee(sp), and a couple of others since Ihave been using computers, 1995 with windows and Mac.......

Actually, I used computers as far back as 1969 if you include University studies....

I also use Defender, the bundled av when I turn off the AVAST program.

I suppose it is something like shoes, different sizes for different people.

So reading this i am not sure what your did or what the problem was???

I ""assume"" that you turned on offline Mode in Avast and forgot to turn it back to online mode and that selecting offline mode causes Avast to prevent your computer connecting to the internet??

Now is my assumption correct or did something else happen?

I use a version of Avast and i have never had any problems with it.. I have never suffered any virus or hacking attacks while using Avast so it seems to me to be doing it's job so i am satisfied..

Being vision impaired I simply did not see it due to the need to use various magnifying glasses, the on screen magnifiers and other helps such as alt - or alt+ frequently.

The bare truth is, I did not know it had tht feature. It is certan when I ws turning off the protection for and install previous to the flap I must have haphazardly clicked on that option........now I do know what to do. God bless you always.

You probably caught me on that alt - and alt +, they should read control- and control +. I thought about that after leaving..........Touch typing has its disadvantages, especiall when old age dyslexic memory pops up.-

I think mine did. I use Comodo Dragon. It has the CD Online Security. And it has a DNS mask too. But that mask series of numbers is the same for every Comodo Dragon browser anyone has and who opts for that DNS mask.
I dunno if the CDOS is all its cracked up to be quite frankly. I'm glad I found this thread.
I agree Avast slows computers. But what else is out there that lets it keep on a fast track & blocks malware and key logging sneaky's?

You can simply Google "antivirus comparisons". Or add the word free if you're looking for free versions. Check multiple sites and get an average of which ones are top. Most will have variations in the best.
