A good woman is a humble woman. A woman that is modest and quiet.

A godly wife is a wife that supports and helps her husband to be the best possible version of himself. That puts his needs before her own.

Sometimes I think a woman feels she need to serve a husband. That she is not enough on her own. Sometimes I say half jokingly I need a head. I can't think or make decisions on my own.

If I say out loud these statements I will be ridiculed. At work they would think I was sarcastic. But deep down this is what I think.

How can a modern, single woman be content without a husband to serve? How should a woman fill her role as a wife?

I don't have any answers. I just want to hear your reflections from women and men on this matter.
Wives should serve their husbands. That’s biblical. Women and men (regardless of marital status) should serve others in their community too. Galatians 5:13
After all, Jesus didn't come to be served. He came to serve.
Matthew 20:28
Mark 10:45
Serving others is part of the Christian lifestyle, and it is not dependent upon marital status.

We have been conditioned by society and the church to believe that. However, that’s not what the Bible illustrates. That's why it’s so important for us to study the Bible for ourselves.
There are unmarried women in scripture who made wise decisions.

  • Prophetess Anna lived with her husband only 7 years after marriage, then she was a widow until she was 84. As a widow, Anna made a conscious decision to worship God day and night with fasting and praying. Anna, who had no husband, made a conscious decision to give thanks to God and speak about Jesus to everyone who had been waiting for God to rescue Jerusalem. Luke 2:36-38

  • Dorcas is generally thought to be a widow because the Bible does not list a husband for her. Dorcas decided to do many good works. For example, Dorcas, who had no husband, made clothes for needy widows. Acts 9:36-42

  • The midwives, who had no husbands, feared God, refused to obey the king’s evil command and kept the Hebrew baby boys alive. Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own. Ex 1:15-21

  • Naomi, a widow, advised Ruth to go to Boaz as he slept in the threshing floor and request that he redeem her and her property. Naomi’s concern was for Ruth’s future, that Ruth would gain a husband and provider (Ruth 3).

  • Theologians believe that Martha was single because the Bible doesn't list a husband for her. Martha, who had no husband, was hospitable and decided to open her home to Jesus and his disciples. Luke 10:38

  • Theologians believe that Mary was single too. Mary, who had no husband, decided (to her sister's dissatisfaction) to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to him. Luke 10:40-42
There is also a wife listed in scripture who made much better decisions than her husband.
  • After her husband made a decision that almost got himself and the men in his house killed, Abigail made a wise and life-saving decision. 1 Samuel 25
There are some virtuous women noted in scripture. The Bible doesn't tell us much about their husbands at all.
  • We know nothing about Deborah's husband, other than his name. However, the prophetess Deborah (not her husband) led Israel at one time. She held court under the Palm of Deborah. The Israelites went to her (not her husband) to have their disputes decided. Judges 4:4

  • We don't know a whole lot about Jael’s husband either. However, Jael (not her husband) devised a plan and killed Israel's enemy - Sisera. Judges 4&5

  • We don't know if the Wise woman of Abel had a husband. The Bible doesn't tell us. Her marital status was not noteworthy. When others in her town (men included) were too afraid and/or passive to speak, the Wise woman of Abel spoke words of wisdom that saved her city from destruction. 2 Sam 20:14-22
There is 1 example in scripture when God allows the wife (not the husband) to make the very important household decision.
  • But God said, "Abraham, don't worry about your slave woman and the boy. Just do what Sarah tells you. Isaac will inherit your family name, Genesis 21:12
Toinena said, “How can a modern, single woman be content without a husband to serve?”

Learn from the virtuous women in scripture, who didn't have husbands, yet they
  • worshipped God
  • prayed
  • told others about Jesus
  • did good works
  • helped the needy
  • feared God
  • refused to obey evil commands
  • protected children
  • were hospitable
  • and spoke words of wisdom.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be married. That's a perfectly natural desire. However, the idea that women can't make WISE decisions on their own (in the absence of a man) is a lie - false teaching because that’s not what the Bible illustrates for us.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ASK God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5
