Gen 3:16 . .To the woman He said: Your desire will be for your husband.

Apparently the Hebrew of that passage is difficult; not even the great rabbis
Rashi and Ramban were in agreement how best to interpret it. But the
passage appears to me simply the very first law prohibiting adultery.

This law was enacted before there were any Jews, and before there were
any Christians. Everybody on Earth at the time of its enactment were
Gentiles-- and would continue to be Gentiles until such a time as Jacob came
along to engender Israel's twelve tribes.

So then, I take it that Gen 3:16 is a universal law regardless of one's race,
color, gender, religion, and/or ethnic identity; and to my knowledge, this
particular law prohibiting adultery has never been repealed.

It's not a "law".

It's a statement of the consequences of sin, as is the rest of Genesis 3:14-19. If it were law, then men sin when they eat without toiling in the ground every day, or eat bread without sweaty faces, and women sin when giving childbirth with pain-reduction treatments of any kind.

At this rate the ladies of CC aren't gonna listen to ANYTHING any of us guys have to say, even if we can back up our statements/assertions with Scripture.

It may not have been a 'law' at first ...since no laws were given, but it is a definite fore-runner' of the 7th Commandment ' Thou shalt not commit adultery' .....given later in the 10 Commandments.

It is about submission:

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you. ”

Respectfully, Genesis 3:16 has nothing to do with godly submission either. It is a statement of the unpleasant consequences that result directly from sin. The woman will be ruled over by the man. That isn't a law, or God's good will, any more than men fighting thorns and thistles while toiling for food is God's good will.

Godly submission (one to another out of love for Christ) is God's good will. Ruling over one another is not. :)

On the contrary, working for food is God's will too:

Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.” Yet we hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling in other people’s business. We command such people and urge them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and work to earn their own living.

if it's anything like a law it is not "thou shalt not desire any other than your husband"

it would be "
thou shalt desire your husband"

making this a commandment against adultery is pretty ridiculous at a time when there is literally only one human male on the entire planet.

the setting and context of Genesis 3 is this:

there are only two human beings on the planet. one man and one woman.
judgement is being pronounced.

Genesis 3:16 is God's judgement of the Woman, for whom adultery is literally impossible to commit unless you're suspecting that decades later she may lay with her own children.

Originally LOVE was NOT the motive for submission....a command was given to obedience...when man did not obey God had to introduce law, which in the OT was strict and without mercy. This 'letter of the law 'was changed in the NT to 'submit in LOVE. Like it or not all of us have to submit to a 'pecking-order' for things to run smoothly...see EPHESiANS ch 5 & 6. Fitting into this ORDER is part of our 'learning-process Heb 5v8,9.

Paul was addressing laziness, which is a separate issue. Please read carefully what I wrote.

Genesis 3:16 is not about a ‘pecking order’. Nor is, ‘submit to one another out of reverence for Christ’.

I take it that God intended the restriction for not only Eve but also her
female posterity; which suggests to me that even that far back in time;
senior women were expected to teach the younger about morals even as
they're expected to do so now.

Titus 2:3-5 . . Teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live,
not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.
Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children,
to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be
subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

Since Paul refers to this verse as the commandment for godly submission, you are completely incorrect, and in fact contradicting Scripture.

That is an argument from silence, because Paul doesn't actually quote any passage. Further, your position cannot account for the rest of the Genesis passage not being commands.

Your appeal to authority and fear are irrelevant. When will you learn to simply discuss instead of throwing around imprecations and condemnation? You ain't Jesus.

honestly? in all my years in different forums I have never seen the like to compare with this forum

misogynists seem to frequent this forum

that is no reflection on the admin or the mods because I think they know better

well then so clever you figured it out :geek:

it is really clever how some men try to tell Christian women they are still under a curse...because that is what it was...not a commandment

and by the way, adultery applies to men also. in fact, Jesus said that if you just look with lust...you have comitted adultery

the law is fulfilled by Christ and there is no male or female in Him

maybe do some research on the word 'covenant' and what it means and how God uses it

you have an agenda as certain men in the forum have illustrated they join with you

it's so interesting how some will say we are no longer partakers of the OT but will attempt to force women under it nonetheless
