Okay, so...the dictionary says that firmament just means heaven or sky, so that's what I'll tell them it is.

ok

not a bad way of going about it

Genesis 1:7

“And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.”

so there is water above heaven?

or above "the sky"?

The earth's atmosphere around it
The solar system has a atmoshere around it

Its an ancient word for a complex system we mostly call atmosphere, including sky, water cycle and the visibility of stars.

The firmament is what our lives turn into after we repent of our sin.

firmament — an expanse - a beating out as a plate of metal: a name given to the atmosphere from its appearing to an observer to be the vault of heaven, supporting the weight of the watery clouds. By the creation of an atmosphere, the lighter parts of the waters which overspread the earth‘s surface were drawn up and suspended in the visible heavens, while the larger and heavier mass remained below. The air was thus “in the midst of the waters,” that is, separated them; and this being the apparent use of it, is the only one mentioned, although the atmosphere serves other uses

The firmament is the unseen faith principle .I beleive we could say summed up in the prescription for rightly dividing the world of God to help us find the spiritual meanings hid in parables. The signified language of God.

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.2 Corinthian 4:18

Right from the beginning we are learning about the faith of our faithful Creator ,not seen .

The firmament and heaven are used interchangeably in the bible. We have two Hebrew words for them.

First mentioned in Gen. 1:6:
Firmament = H7549
רָקִיעַ
râqı̂ya‛
raw-kee'-ah
From H7554; properly an expanse, that is, the firmament or (apparently) visible arch of the sky: - firmament.

First mentioned in Gen. 1:1:
Heaven = H8064
שָׁמֶה שָׁמַיִם
shâmayim shâmeh
shaw-mah'-yim, shaw-meh'
The second form being dual of an unused singular; from an unused root meaning to be lofty; the sky (as aloft; the dual perhaps alluding to the visible arch in which the clouds move, as well as to the higher ether where the celestial bodies revolve): - air, X astrologer, heaven (-s).

It seems firmament pretty much just means the sky. So does heaven, but it can include the solar system or universe. We should not draw too many conclusions about where God is. Let's just say that His abode is in the heavenly realm, like another dimension. We also have angels all around us in this heavenly dimension.
