Building Character
Young people need to know to be good and to do good. Few will argue with the importance
of teaching values and responsibility to our children – not only right from wrong, but specific,
affirmative values such as fairness, courage, honor, and respect for others. Beginning with
the Scout Oath and Scout Law, the Boy Scouts of America program is infused with character
-building activities that allow youth to apply abstract principles to daily living situations.

Scout Oath
When the first edition of the Boy Scout Handbook was printed in 1911, it contained a
special scout oath. For over a century, new American scouts have recited this promise:
On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey
the Scout Law;To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.
