There are 3 uses for the beautiful gift of tongues:
(Note: the gift of tongues is the only one of the nine spiritual gifts (of the Holy Spirit) that the believer can use at their own choosing, the other 8 gifts are as HE wills. 1Cor 12v7-11, 1Cor 14v4,18, Jude v20,21).
Uses:
1) The main use of the gift of tongues is for private prayer (including intercession, 1Tim 2v1-8) and for building up one's faith. Matt 6v6, 7v7-11, Luke 11v9-13, Rom 8v26-28, 1Cor 14v2,4,18, Jude v20,21. Paul thought VERY highly of this wonderful gift and it was the means of his tremendous apostolic ministry that was accompanied by the Lord doing mighty signs, wonders and miracles through to confirm the truth that he spoke. John 14v12-14, Rom 15v18-20, 1Cor 14v18, 2Cor 12v12,13.
2) As a sign to unbelievers (as on the Day of Pentecost). Acts 2v1-39, 1Cor 14v22.
3) As an utterance given under the prompting of the Holy Spirit in a Church gathering that should be interpreted so that the assembly is edified, this operation of the gift of tongues and the interpretation of tongues is equivalent to the gift of prophecy. 1Cor 14v5,27.
And MOST importantly we need to remember that "all things be done decently and in order" in the Church meeting! 1Cor 14v26,40.
Those of you who rubbish God's wonderful gifts, DON'T throw the baby out with the bath water, embrace and seek the Giver of them so as to be a channel for them to meet the needs of a needy Church and world! John 14v12-14, 15v1-9, 1Cor 12v7-28,31, 13v13, 1Cor 14v1.
