Life is rough, humor relieves people, helps them cope in a difficult situation, and lifts up the spirit. My grandma was joking while she was having a heart attack, she made jokes riding to the hospital and afterwards, she made all the staff and doctors laugh while she was fighting for her life! You've just got people who find a funny angle in every situation. I'm a lot like her, although not everyone copes in the same way. I don't think the intent was to offend but just to put some laughter into a grim day. This whole thing must be very mentally taxing on the nurses and they need a bit of lightheartedness.
