I wasn't sure which forum to post this but since I frequent the Singles the most I thought would ask here.

OK Jesus or was it Paul, said with food and clothing we ought to be content. I think it was when he was saying in good times and bad, he learned the secret to living in Christ. And I recall James writing about how someone with rich clothing ought not to judge someone wearing rags, and make them sit apart (back row please).

The past two years of recession etc meant I hadn't bought new clothes at all. I just kept wearing my old ones, until now when I finally decided I ought to buy new clothes - and it's a new year and I need them. Many got worn out and well, in all seasons you need appropriate clothes to keep cool or warm or dry. I had not bought any new ones, and for some strange reason gave away a lot of clothes to charity because I wasn't wearing them, they didn't fit or whatever. So I ended up having NO black clothing for funerals, and had to buy a black dress and black shoes cos I literally had nothing.

Anyway I have rediscoverd the joys and perils of going clothes shopping. What about you? Another thing is - who still dress up for church? And if you are female, do you find that you still end up wearing your best on Sundays and that may be a dress or skirt, because jeans or trousers are just not feminine enough? Some churches are very traditional or strict on the dress code?

What about your going out clothes? If you want to go on dates and look nice? What do you wear? or at weddings?
What do you wear at home? Do you wear male clothes if you are male and female clothes if you are female or do you go for unisex clothing? How about uniforms?
Do you treat people different because of the clothes they are wearing?
What do you feel about hand-me downs?
Do you sew? Do you care about fashion?

Let's have a discussion about it. Answer any of the questions that you find interesting.

What you wear tells people a lot about what you think, both about yourself and about the event you are attending. A man who shows up wearing sweatpants probably isn't taking things very seriously. A woman who dresses like a prostitute... I'd avoid that girl.

Some people get pissy about this. "They JUDGE me just because I like wearing this. How dare they?!" Well yeah, it's your choice. You're free to wear what you want, within bounds of local decency laws. But you also accept the message that clothing choice conveys to others about you, whether you like it or not.

"Earl you are NOT wearing sweatpants to take me shopping!"

"Why not?"

"What will people think when they see us?"

"They'll think, gee I wish I was as comfortable as that old guy is."

I wear a plain white t-shirt and cargo shorts. The dress code only changes on special occasions.
I wear cleaner clothes when I'm going somewhere I have to be presentable, and tattered clothes with stains almost anywhere else.
I intend to wear every peice of apparel I get until it's too worn out to stay on my body anymore, and not buy new clothes until I have barely any wearable clothes left.

I wear my uniform when on duty, but apart from that I wear whatever I want. I don’t look much like navy when I’m strolling around in my neighborhood.
I served in the RAN during the Vietnam war era. We were advised not to go onshore in uniform. The military was none to popular at the time. Anyone would have thought that we started the war and had a choice to go or not.

I have some smart casual clothes that I wear when I go out or sometimes to church meetings. Mostly its jeans in winter and shorts in warmer weather. We live in an age where clothing can be cheap and is easily available. Around the house, it's more casual. And I hate wearing shoes.

I had one guy tell me that my skirts were too short, but actually the skirt was longer than the shorts all the other girls were wearing. I was not judging him on HIS clothing, plus, if he wanted me to wear longer skirts or trousers or leggings, he could offer to buy them for me - as good quality clothes are expensive and because I live in NZ where the sizing is always up - really hard to find clothes that are petite and NOT look like a child. haha

So that's why I have all these pink clothes - cargos, tops, trousers all in pink until I was thoroughly sick of wearing pink clothes. But I have no choice. Just last week the only dress in my size (it's a maxi, so it covers my legs) at the store was bright pink. I remember one guy complaining my socks were 'too pink' and I'm like...that what colour socks come in! What do you want me to wear, white socks and look like a school girl? Fishnet stockings ? A workmate once gave me fishnet stockings! Why? Another guy said when that I looked TOO much like a school girl.

So I can't win. I hate guys judging me on what I wear. I never judge them. If they want to wear rags till they fall apart and have holes in their socks, (and expect me to darn them) well that's the price for being female.
And they would also expect me to wash them if I was a wife. That's probably why I wouldn't make a good wife. I'd be like - do your own laundry, and don't mix up the colours, cos if you put a red sock in with my whites, I'm going to end up all pink anyway.

Also, I have worn trackpants to church, and nobody said anything.

Last Sunday, I did not go to church as I didn't have anything suitable to wear. So I went shopping, and managed to find two dresses that fit on sale. One had strawberries on them, and another had wombats. I hope people don't think I look like a prostitute in the strawberry dress. Well at least it wasn't a cherry dress.

Next week I'm going to wear skinny jeans to church, and see if anyone comments. They might make me sit at the back, especially if I wear my big church hat.

Asians do not wear shoes in the house. We wear slippers. It's an unspoken rule. Don't wear your dirty shoes inside.

If you don't know that rule, you don't belong to the Asian club. Also, Jesus was always washing peoples feet. I remember I asked one (non asian) guy to take his shoes off, and he was offended. He didn't want people to see his feet.

Just wear glasses with your normal clothes. Then you'll always look smart casual.

I worked for a gardening company and we had uniform - guys and gals had the same. Sometimes we got muddy in uniform, cos you know, it rains and soil can turn into mud while working. Anyway one lady asked if the company has a laundry and washes our uniforms for us. I'm like?? That doesn't happen anymore. We have to wash our own uniforms!

When I worked in a bookstore, we had these green, white and black polo shirts with the branding on them. We looked like elves. We had to supply our own black shoes, and black bottoms. I would change out of the uniform when finishing my shift, because who walks around in their uniform when not working?

I notice Mormons have a uniform when they go on their 'missions" i.e annoy people by knocking on doors and invading others property. It's always a crisp white shirt and navy trousers, and a name tag with 'Jesus Christ, latter day saints' on them.

Has anyone gone to church barefoot? I think hippies did, but they don't do that anymore, or wear flowers in their hair.
I went to a pacific Island church, and the women were always wearing flowers in their hair. If you wear one on your left, you are free, on the right, you are taken. I think..or could be the other way round.

They would pluck a fresh flower everyday - could be hibiscus, or gardenia. You can do that in the tropics.

Women in richer countries just wear gold rings with diamonds on them, pearls, and other costly array. If you are hindu, you'll wear a bindi and a sari, but you might get chucked out of a western church for wearing all your gold embroidery.

Some sects/cults ask tell their women how to do their hair and never cut it, and wear a drab uniform of long dress with ruffles. These women look like handmaids. Nuns have a habit, of course. I don't know how or why that came about. Mother Teresa always wore a plain white and blue sari to fit in with the hindus in Calcutta.

No, it's just they can't afford better clothes. Sweatpants and prostitute female clothing is all that's on offer at the Warehouse.

Some people are poor you know Lynx. All their money is going on rent and food. Nothing left for clothing.

A good quality skirt or dress can be anywhere from $120 - $650 . I mean, designer clothes, ACCEPTABLE designers, have to make money, otherwise, they wouldn't design clothes, and we females would all just wear sacks with holes cut out of them.

Events.
Weddings..in western weddings, brides always wear white. In Chinese weddings, brides always wear red. I would think at a Western/Asian wedding that the brides could compromise and wear pink.

And then you wonder why girls wear so much pink clothing.

I distinctly remember going to a friends birthday party when I was 9 or 10 years old, and wearing a pink ruffle ra-ra skirt, as it was in the 1980s and puffy skirts were trendy. I was popular for wearing that skirt, and all the girls wanted me to wear it all the time.

Actually it was a hand-me down, as back then we couldn't afford clothes in my family of 4 children, but I didn't tell people this. Kids knew anyway, cos I would wear the same clothes for a week, and pants that got holes in the knees.

Yea fond memories about clothes as a child. It was like Dolly Parton and the coat of many colours. I was sure laughed at for wearing 'poor' clothes.

Does anyone here knit or crochet. I do/did, but it would take me too long now cos of other things I have to do. You have to find the right pattern, and learn the stitches. I knit cardigans and jumpers cos need warm clothes. The yarn has to be real wool though. I wouldn't knit acrylics. I don't like wearing plastic.

Ok I have a lot to say about clothing! I guess because its something I need to wear everyday, and I can't just walk around naked in my living room like Alanis Morrisette.

Exactly. In that region, dressing in that manner tells people you are poor.

What region.
The way you say it, it's like you are judging people for being poor. Poor people don't choose to be poor. They'd much rather be rich. But circumstances often don't allow them to be.

Honestly, this irritates me the way you judge people.

Coming from you, I'll take that as a compliment.
