Hey Everyone,

Here's another scenario for people to ponder and tell us what they would do (while subtly giving away hints about their personality in the process!)

Here's the situation:

* For marrieds: You are having in-laws, church leaders, a boss, or other important guests over for dinner for the first time. (Feel free to tell us how this actually went down in your own real life if you'd like!)

* For singles: You have been seeing a special someone for some time now, and are going to meet his/her parents for the first time. You are hosting them for dinner, and will be providing the meal on your own. (As always, real-life stories are also welcome!)

Naturally, you want to make a good first impression!

And so, THE PRESSURE IS ON!!!

Do you:

1. Plan an elaborate 7-course meal, then cook everything from scratch by yourself, including a 5-layer cake for dessert.

2. Call YOUR MAMA and ask HER to cook an elaborate 7-course meal from scratch for you --- then cleverly pass it all off as your own.

3. Shell out a small fortune on GrubHub, set up an elaborate table setting with candles (so that people can't actually see the food -- or take-out containers -- very clearly,) and try to pass THIS off as your own cooking.

4. Order the best deal at the local pizza joint and call it a day (or evening.)

5. Openly confess that your idea of cooking is popping open a cup of ramen noodles in the microwave, then offer to buy everyone dinner.

I know you all probably have other answers than the ones given, so don't be shy, and let's hear what YOU would do if YOU had to impress some V.I.D.G.'s!! (Very Important Dinner Guests.)

(I have to admit, I'd love to know if there is anyone out there who has passed off someone else's cooking as their own -- successfully -- and what happened when they actually had to come clean!)

Now, everyone knows I'm not a cook -- and my mama isn't one either -- so personally, I'm leaning towards the "Dinner Delivered By Drones" option.🍕

How about YOU? :D

So when my wife and I have had guests, we typically ask what the guests DON'T like so we don't serve it. Then we offer a small menu of sorts or a few options for them to pick what is for dinner or narrow it down to a few options that will do.

Some of the things we have served are:

1. Stuffed shells and garlic bread.
2. Grilled steaks and grilled chicken with cheddar and bacon filled potato skins and salad.
3. Cheese burgers and Hot dogs and chips.

When we have had family pot lucks, a favorite I bring are these home made pizza rolls I make.

I season hot italian sausage with salt, pepper, granulated garlic and onion, and a bit of MSG. I sautee it with very finely diced red and green peppers. I let that mixture cool and then use wontons and egg wash to wrap bits of the mixture with a bit of tomato paste and mozzarella cheese then deep fry them.

Those are a personal favorite and even if they are simple they go over well.

When we have dinner guests I'm the cook. I like to cook and can prepare some delicious dishes. The only issue I have with having guests is I have to clean up and do any other chore that's needed as my wife never lends a hand. It's been that way since the day we married.

Two meals that take a lot of work that I like to share are shredded beef burritos and street tacos de carnitas. I'll also grill rib-eye steaks, or I used to when they weren't quite so expensive...

While I've baked some pies and cakes, I rarely offer dessert.

We bypass all the problems. We invite them to dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.
Yeah. This.

I can make a great angel hair pasta with crab and garlic sauce. It will be imitation crab though, as I am allergic to the real thing.

I'm not so much on seven course meals. I'm more along the lines of making a lot of one thing, with maybe one side. Tonight's meal will be a big pot of chili.

I'm laughing, because the "Dinner Delivered By Drones" is hilarious! And creative!!

Sort of #1. I say "sort of" because I won't be doing a 7 course meal. If those folks are too fancy for me, then I probably don't know them lol. In only one relationship have I cooked something that his relatives ate and that was me bringing a dish or two to holiday dinners. My desserts seemed to always please, especially the homemade gingerbread roll I made one year.

Anyway, I'm thinking I might do poached fish, steamed broccoli, squash casserole (from a recipe I altered years ago to my liking), homemade rolls, and homemade lemon meringue pie.

If they seem like fun folks, I'd make homemade stromboli and serve homemade tiramisu mousse for dessert.

We have a place nearby called Reddy Roast. We usually get roast beef. Neither my wife nor I enjoy cooking. She is excellent, me not so much. My specialty is Fettuccine Carbon and Charcoal Chicken. Charcoal Chicken is hard to eat but good for your teeth, so I'm told. I like my visitors too much to cook for them. Like many males, I'm more comfortable at the BBQ. That way the smoke alarm does not keep going off. Our space here is very limited so BBQ is not practicable. So if it's not microwavable, it's off the menu.

A restaurant setting is probably a good idea for meeting the parents.

When I met my daughter in laws Mom and Dad, it was at a big family gathering at a park. They wanted me to meet everyone at the same time. They are a wonderful group of people!

If I'm responsible for meal prep, I'm gonna stay in my lane and grill burgers.

That is a good road and you should drive down it as often as possible.

Not that I have any vested interest in this. Just saying.

I'm a recovering chef....
I'm in a 12-step program but still having issues with that first step.

I would not have a 7 layer cake I made. That was so Last Year.
I had chocolate mouse with a few odds and ends once, and tiramisu was the other dessert....I have a LOT of tricks up my sleeve.

And yes....I did dinner and finished it right In front of them. Of course several breads to go with. Olive oil with fresh herbs I grew for dipping instead of butter.

Dinners? Not 7 courses but Paella for one meal (I had some great saffron), pork loin stuffed with apples and ginger served with a caramel sauce for another, and the other meal was beef tenderloin with a thyme tomatoes sauce and a herbed pasta primavera.
I tried my best to keep it all relaxed and comfortable because I want to KNOW these people while putting on a dog of sorts because I can.

Green tea with lemon and sugar to wash it down (our house wine) but I was liberal with the use if spirits for all the foods I cooked...even if it was church staff at the meal from the head pastor to associates. Coffee I personally blended was served with dessert.

Life in my house is never boring. We do this type of entertaining alot. Because it matters. Its the type of thing i really believe in. Good food and good company and a relaxed atmosphere....it's how real relationships are formed. And I definitely want those. Part of fulfilling the 2nd most important commandment.

Tonight was our gingerbread houses party....where I baked off a bunch of blank gingerbread houses and made frosting and bought a bunch of candy to cover them with. Then we invited a LOT of kids to cover them up with the candy and frosting. We had white Chilli, corn muffins, and cookies and sourdough bread and lots of other munchies and cocoa to go with. Lots of fun. My dad was running around taking pictures and munching on snacks.

Good memories are made with times like these.

Singles reply - There’s an old saying, “you keep them how you got them”.

Everyone wants to make a good first impression. However, the long game is best started with low expectations.

Dessert is an easy one, pie, cookies etc. Be classy, take it out of the package and put it on a nice platter

When I was cooking regularly my meals would take 30 mins or less to cook. I figure if most meals are eaten in 20 mins or less why waste a lot of time cooking them.

Now holiday meals are a different story those can take two to three days of prep work with main cooking on the holiday and then let the feasting begin.

I'm sure everyone knows what this thread REALLY is -- it's a covert reconnaissance mission to figure out who will be serving what, and where we will all want to "suddenly" show up for dinner.

For our convenience, the posters in this thread have very helpfully revealed their menu plans and now all we have to do is choose.

Next thread idea: "How to Crash/Invite Yourself Over to a CC Member's Place for Dinner, Dessert, or Drinks."

I figure if we time it just right, we're going to be eating well for at least the next two weeks -- not to mention the "to-go" plates we humbly request "for a friend."

Some of us believe in the line "I was never here" Good luck finding some of us....in my neck of the woods (it's a jungle out there) strangers ALL get one squinted eye. Asking directions WILL get you lost.
Just saying....gotta call before you come.
