in recent years, if there is a product at the grocery store that sometimes isn't always available, then you see that product stocked well, i buy many packages but never purchase all of them as that would be selfish. the North Country Clairemont New Hampshire bacon, lately, sometimes is unavailable. so i'll buy 10 or 12 packages of it when it is. same thing with the Saratoga Himalayan salt potato chips. what do think on this?

I don't see anything wrong with this. 10 or 12 packages isn't a lot, especially since the store probably has 100s of the product. What could be selfish is if there is a big sale like Black Friday and then someone stocks up on the deals, leaving no deals for others.

Heh... This topic is near and dear to my heart.

There is a salvage grocery I frequent. I don't go there to save money. I go there to find neat things you will never see at the regular grocery store. I've tried lots of stuff - cashew fruit juice (yes there is a cashew fruit) chocolate fig bars, caramel mustard dip, rice flour balls with sweet bean paste in the middle, even a chocolate bar that is shaped specifically to fit in a sports coat pocket.

But when I find something I like, I'll buy all they got. Because I'll never, ever find it again.

Do I think that's greedy? No. There's plenty of other food on the shelves. Most people don't even like the stuff I want.

Now if I bought up all of something that I knew everyone wanted, then sold it at a higher price because I knew they would pay for it... THAT would be greedy.

More like the Lord ensured it would be there when you saw it ? Make sure you thank Him.:)(y)

We have not because we ask not, we ask and receive not because we ask amiss.

this particular bacon, North Country, is difficult to get. many times there's none at all. actually, every time i'm at the bacon station, i tell everyone that N.C. is the best bacon around. i end up being a silent salesman for the store. i turned a lot of people on to it. it's expensive but we don't care.

Supply chain is a complex issue. Lots of interruptions are always possible....so are damaged goods delivery.

But....yes, its selfish behavior.

It's just a product....you could be satisfied with something else. Sausage perhaps.

I make my own so I sometimes go without....and when I make it I always share....its part of my planning when I make anything from corned beef to breakfast sausage. (Trained chef....still in recovery)

And as far as it being missing in your store....
The meat manager doesn't order anything....he doesn't get to create his layout of his counter/case. That is all done by computers these days based upon cash register sales. And guess what? The cash register is doing the ordering and your binge buying is part of the reason its hit or miss in the store.

I think that the store may have a whole bunch more of the product in the back. So empty the shelf if you want to. Also, if demand is high, the store will be happy to stock more of the product since the more they sell the more money they make.

I was a grocery store vendor for years....
Meat managers dont get a lot of say anymore about what to order or what goes where in their case. They may only get one case in.....its bacon....it always sells.

But what bulk buying does is cause a flag in the program of recorded sales as a straw buyer is coming in.

Record labels figured this out decades ago.....where album sales are artificially increased by straw buyers to help make an album go gold.....gets more radio airtime and everything.

Same thing with meat.....

My parents always gave the example of budgeting in a little extra for things that are on sale that you can always use but won't go bad (like paper products,) or things that might be a rarer find and need to be stocked up on.

I used to clean out a shelf of everything I needed or wanted to buy as well if I had the money.

But a post here on CC from a member I highly respect changed my mind.

This CC member wrote that they were caring for other members of their family all with just their own paycheck, and they often didn't have the money to get some of the things they needed, only to find the shelves empty when they finally did have the money.

This person ended their post by asking readers to please consider leaving a few items for others who can't get there right away or don't have the money when things are fully stocked. I've been on both sides of the coin, so this struck a chord in my heart.

Now I usually leave a few items on the shelf and pray that it helps the next person. I see this as similar to when Boaz commanded his servants to purposely pull out extra grain and leave it in the fields for Ruth to pick up for herself and her mother-in-law, Naomi.

But, this is just my own personal conviction.

We people in the USA tend to be too self absorbed especially when we can afford things and are unaware about others that cant necessarily afford things.

And its across the board with every product on the market....and several that aren't.

Tamiflu is a prime example. It's made from star anise....and since this is not a popular spice like pepper....limited supply.
A USA company bought almost all of the star anise groves (assistance provided by our government)
Then built the factories cheaply and without ALL the safeguards. (Volatile Chemistry in nitrogen flushed environment) of course they blew up.
Then on top of this the government forced the company to back order all other nations orders for the drug while the USA warehouses billions of doses of the medicine. All paid for by your tax dollars.

This is just one example....of thousands of examples.

You dont have to be wealthy to cause economic imbalances and bullying behavior. You just have to want it and be fearful of going without.

We're getting a bit extreme here. The op specifically said he doesn't buy everything on the shelf.

He has many opportunities. I pop by there twice a week.

Duh, of course He has opportunities, Her created you, He knows everything about you, including if and when He nay take you home early so you won't hurt yourself by being a chronic dork, same as all of us.
If we claim to be His, we are no longer our own.
you can only "stop by" if it is in His will your heart keeps beating.
best wishes

In the interest of getting back on topic...

One of the ladies who runs the salvage grocery told me there are some people who stop by every day, and buy everything in stock if they find something they like.

I can't imagine they eat that much that fast, unless they have a big family. I wonder where they put it all...

i disagree a bit. it's not "just" a product. this is the best bacon ever around here. many say so. no, not going to be satisfied with any other bacon. since i moved out of my mom's house, i've been able to purchase the food i want. i also get the best sausage for breakfast. remember, i said i do not buy all the packages on the shelf, i always leave some. in this start, department managers tell the store manager what they are out of. if it's the same product week to week, it's ordered by way of a particular department, not computers.

that is the simple truth, ubiquitously.
