The New Testament is full of verses commanding us to love each other--not a suggestion (John 13:34-35, 1 John 4:7-8, 1 Peter 4:8, 1 Corinthians 13, 1 John 4:21, etc.). The scary one is 1 John 4:7-8 where Paul says that we don't even know God if we don't love because God is love. NetChaplain wrote, "place love over doctrine (as we know over all things), because if it's not out of love it's not in faith (Gal 5:6)."

Obviously this is VERY important.

So how do we do it? Besides the obvious forgiving, being kind, etc. How do you love the people around you? I'm looking for practical ways.

I'm trying to be better at loving people, so I really appreciate any and all responses!

Chuck Swindoll taught the definition of the word "love" most commonly used in the NT is, "seeking the highest good of tyhe other person and doing what is possible for you to do to meet that need".

Jesus said to love others as one loves himself (Matt. 22:39),
so a person learns to love oneself as he/she learns to love others--and vice versa.

No one can or does Love as God does, and proven in Son going willingly to that cross first, to reconcile us all to himself, 2 Cor 5:17-20 then risen and that be where the new life to get given is at, once anyone chooses to believe and stick with it, (Col. 1:21-23) no matter what, one anyone stands and does not give up on God in belief to Son as risen, will see through the veil too eventually, not that I got it, rather now get it in the risen Son for us all to love all in truth. In being forever forgiven by God, not others as I used to think they should, but people, includes myself do not, and if try to do it as you said you are trying to do it. you are seeing you can't, Hallelujah, now see we all need the risen perfect Savior Jesus Christ the perfect Son of God for us to get new life of love to all. Not As if anyone could do perfect in the first born flesh nature first. no one can and or could, proven in the First (Old Testament) to me, God was not pleased with even the first Chosen, no one could air ever can be perfect but God, Jesus said this only n]my Father is good in Matt 19.
Now seeing that Son going willingly to the cross, without any flesh fights back, takes on all sin in his Father's sight, that Father has been pissed off about ever since Adam the first failed and all after him in the flesh, then got the first chosen and did mighty miracles for them, read Hebrews 10, they still failed. So Father finally sent Son to be in our place (everyone's deserved death place)
Son, Jesus took it all upon himself for us to be forgiven, reconciled first. For Daddy, Father, PaPa to not kill us or berate us, any one of us anymore. As if God ever did that to beign with, people, did this to themselves and still do this presently, God has no need to put any evil out to anyone, people do that to themselves and others by themselves. Anyone can do bad all by themselves, God never orchestrates it ever.
That part got done on the cross first, reconciliation to use all (Hebrews 10:10). I know this when he said It is Finished John 19:30 he meant it it is done the being under Law to do it is finished to try to do it and now able to do it through Father in love to all as Son showed us all once risen the new begins and is not easy to being unredeemed in the flesh and blood body still. Best to reckon self dead to sin Romans 6:12, please read it all that Chapter?
I asked God, what is finished? then the Journey of new life began. I see what is finished being under Law to not sin is finished, Jesus took it all away, everything took it all John 1:29 for us all 1 John 2:1-2
It is done John 19:30, he fulfilled Matthew 5:17, yet there is still verse 18. The law today is only in place for those that have not chosen belief to God Father in risen Son
Read Galatians and ask Daddy, PaPa, Father to reveal truth to you, so you can rest medicine in this love given you and see to do so, willingly, not having to thank you. Please, do not take this amazing gift for granted and not love all, including those that still do wrong, even have done to you wrong or might again, only if you let them, get away from those that do you wrong, do not associate with evil. Ask for the wall of fire to surround you from Father, thank you and learn new daily as you go out and learn new from mistakes too. God stays with us each and never beats anyone up as religionists do, and others do also, that are not of faith in Father and Son as won, those legalists, do not see or know truth yet in the risen Son for them.
God loves you, period, start right there in prayer, please see to stop the worry (Matt 6) over anything, that does not help, it brings in sin to you and anyone else trying not to sin as well, awkwardly Romans 6-7-8

Treating others like you want to be treated, and not treating them like you don't want to be treated. The highest divine law and the ultimate justice. Practice this at every level of your life and you will see Christ form within you.

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12

1 John 4:8
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

It is important to remember the source of love. Relying on mere emotion as humans is ultimately futile as we experience a whole range of emotions.

To love as He loves can only come from obeying and abiding in the Spirit.

We must come to the end of ourselves and step into the power and guidance of the Spirit.

Good point! Agape love involves commitment akin to perseverance in addition to emotion.

The Bible says charity is greater than faith, and faith works by love.

If we do not have love then our faith is no good.

Which is why Paul said he could have all faith so that he could remove mountains but if he did not have charity he is nothing.

And the love of money is the root of all evil for it neglects the poor and needy, and love is the fulling of the law which some coveting after have erred from the faith.

Which is why Jesus told the rich man to sell all he had and give to the poor and then he would be perfect to inherit heaven.

And the early Church sold all they had that was not a necessity and gave to the people that had need.

James aid if they do not have charity then their faith is dead.

John said if they do not have charity then the love of God is not in them.

Charity is love in action and can only be active by action which is why John said do not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed, works, and in truth.

And James said a person is justified by works and not faith alone.

We are saved by faith, and not by works when we first come to Christ for that is all we can do.

But after we receive the Spirit then we have to have works of love for our faith to be valid.

Mat 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Mat 5:45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Heb 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
Heb 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.

Rom 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
Rom 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

We are to love people no matter how they treat us and not retaliate back verbally, or physically, and want the best for everyone no matter how they treat us.

But our level of love will differ between people.

Some people we can hug.

Some people we can shake their hand.

Some people we only want to say hello to them.

Some people we avoid because of their behavior.

But we still have to love them, and follow peace with them, and want the best for them.

How do you love the people around you? I'm looking for practical ways.
Hi AutumnBreeze ... welcome to CC ...

I believe love toward one another is a direct result of our love for God.

1 John 4:11-12 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

If we love one another, God dwells in us and His love is perfected [Greek = teleióō – to consummate, reaching the end-stage, i.e. working through the entire process (stages) to reach the final phase (conclusion) – HELPS Word-studies] in us.

The love believers have for one another reveals that God's love is accomplishing its purpose in the life of the believer. The attire of the believer is love. Love is what the believer is to wear day in and day out.

This love is held out for all to see and partake ... and it is God's love ... not my love ... my love may fall short, but God's love will never fall short. I just gotta get out of the way so God's love can shine through.

What does "come to the end of ourselves" mean and where is this stated in the bible?
Galations 2:20 ESV
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Matthew 16:24-26
English Standard Version

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it

What does it mean to "take up my cross"?
