NUMBER CHAPTER 26 NOTES

v 1 God speaks to Moses and Eleazar

v2 God tells them to take account for all those 20 years and older who can go to war

v5-7 Families of the Reubenites - Reuben eldest son of Jacob (Israel). They were numbered 100,730

v8 Pallu was a Reubenite v5. Eliab was the of Pallu

v9 Dathan and Abiram were the most famous of the congregation and were sons of Eliab. They are Reubenites . Interesting that they were not killed during the Korah incident and refusing to come when Moses called on them

v10 The incident of Korah was a sign

v11 The children of Korah did not die. God has grace for children. God did not kill the children of those who murmured against Him when TCOI were in the wilderness of sin? Can’t recall which area, have to go back and review

v12-14 The families of the Simeonites. They were numbered 22,200

v15-18 The families of Gad. They were numbered 40,500

v19 Er and Onan, sons of Judah, died in the land of Canaan

v20-22 The families of Judah. They were numbered 76,500

v23-25 The families of Issachar. They were numbered 64,300

v26-27 The families of Zebulun. They were numbered 60,500

v28-34 These are the families of Manasseh so of Joseph They were numbered 52,700

v35-37 These are the families of Ephriam son of Joseph. They were numbered 32,500. The total numbered of Joseph’s family was 85,200

v38-41 These are the families of Benjamin. There were numbered 45,600

v43 The families of Shuamites (a family of Dan). They were numbered 64,400

v46 Sarah was the daughter of Asher

v44-47 The families of Asher. They were numbered 53,400

v48-50 These are the families of Naphtali. They were numbered 45,400

v51 The numbered children of Israel 600,730

v52 God is speaking to Moses

v54 The inheritance is divided. Families with more people get more land

v58 Amram is Kohath’s son

v59 It appears Amram married his cousin (Jochebed)? These are Moses’ parents! Moses is a Levite! Is this why God chose the Levites? Moses, Aaron, and Miriam are sisters, not sure it said Miriam was their sister before this point. Korah and Kohath sound very similar I was like wait how does that make sense for a moment😅

v62 Those numbered of the Levite families were 23,000 - all males from a month old upward - why was this different from the 20 year old and up numbering? “for they were not numbered among the children of Israel” - I think this answers the question. Need to review why there were not given an inheritance

v63 This is the numbering of TCOI by Moses and Eleazar

v64-65 The numbering of Moses and Aaron - no man from their numbering were alive, except Caleb and Joshua - My people!

v7 God said that the daughters should get an inheritance

v8-11 God lays out the law of inheritance for TCOI

v12 God is speaking to Moses

v14 TCOI rebelled in the dessert of Zin

v17 I wonder why Moses requested this if Moses was their leader. Was it to have someone who takes over after he passes?

v18 God selected Joshua. God recognized the spirit in Joshua.

v21 Not clear if it is saying that the priests and TCOI should follow Joshua’s every command - that’s how I’m seeing it

NUMBERS CHAPTER 30

v1 Moses speaking to the leaders of the tribes of Israel

v2 God said you should not break your promise with him

v3-4 The same applies for a woman (still in her father’s house) as in v2

v5 God will forgive a woman if a vow is broken because of her father

v8 God will forgive a married woman if her husband makes her break her vow to God

v9 “But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, wherewith they have bound their souls, shall stand against her.” - not clear the meaning “shall stand against her”

v12 Not clear how this verse is different from v8

v13 “Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.” -
very interesting. This reminds me of Eve’s curse, she will obey the desires of the husband. God will forgive women who have to break vows because of their husbands

v15 If a husband does not interfere with a woman’s vows, she must keep her vows

NUMBERS CHAPTER 31 NOTES

v1 God is speaking to Moses

v2 God told Moses to avenge TCOI of the Midianites

v5 12,000 COI were armed for war

v7 They slew all the males. Was this vengeance for the Midianitish woman that was attempting to lie with a man of Israel? Have to review why God was angry with Midian

v8 Why was Balaam slain when he was a man of God? -

v9 Midian women and children were taken captive - are they now a part of TCOI? TCOI claimed their riches

v10 TCOI burned down the cities. Is this why we don’t know for sure where Midian is? Still have to research this

v15 Moses was angry with men of Israel that went to war for keeping the captives alive - not for certain, this is how I’m seeing it

v17 Wow! - I guess this answers question for v9 partly. Moses was willing to keep virgin women - are they a part of TCOI?

v19 The law of purification is still stands

v23 Material things were purified

v25 God is speaking to Moses

v27-47 Allocation of what was gained from the Midianites to TCOI

v40 16,000 persons - assuming it was virgin women according to Moses instructions

v46 It was pertaining to half v43, does that mean there were 32,000 persons in total?

v47 “…Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast…” - is “man” referring to the species of man or to “male”?

v49 They were mighty warriors with God’s protection

v50 The men of war wanted to make an atonement for their souls

v7 Moses questions why they don’t want to go to the promise land

v14 Moses reminded them in the previous verses what their fathers had done and he is questioning if they want to make the same mistake and have God angry with TCOI

v15 Moses said if they do not continue to the promise land, they will receive the same punishment as their fathers

v16-22 The children of Gad and Reuben tell Moses that they will leave their families on the land they want, and the men will go to war to help TCOI reach the promise land. Moses said that they will be able to return to the land they want with their families if they carry out this mission

NUMBERS CHAPTER 35 NOTES

v2 God told TCOI to give cities to the Levites. Not clear if there were 12 tribes in addition to or including the Levites

v6 Among the cities given to the Levites, there are 6 cities of refuge. One of the 6 cities should be appointed for the manslayer - this remined when read earlier in of the man who kills a man by accident (?) can flee the city, have to go back and review

v7 The Levites were given 48 cities

v9 God is speaking to Moses

v11 Answers question in v6. One of the cities of refuge is for the person who killed someone unawares

v12 The manslayer (who killed unawares) should not die until he stands before the congregation in judgement

v14 Three of the cites of refuge were on the side of Jordan and the other 3 were in the land of Canaan

v15 The purpose of the cities of refuge

v16 A murder, someone who killed with the intention of killing someone, shall be put to death

v19 “The revenger of blood” -
I wonder who the revenger of blood is? If someone was killed, would their siblings, parents, close friends - who out of their loved ones would be designated the avenger or would it be any of these people?

v20 Is it saying that you can kill someone without hatred? Because to kill with hatred is sinful in v21

v21
Enmity meaning is the state or feeling of being actively opposed or hostile to someone or something. Not clear who is the person who killed with enmity vs the revenger of blood

v22-23 Describing someone who killed unawares

v24-28 Law between revenger of blood and someone who killed unawares

v29 “your generations”

v30 “…but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.” - Not clear what it is saying, since before it stated witness would cause a murder to die

v31
Should not take pleasure when a murder is put to death. Should love your enemies, vengeance is for God.

v32 Should not lie in wait for someone to leave the city of refuge.
Constant reminders not to have hatred and animosity in your spirit

v33 Murder defiles the land. The only way the land is cleansed by murders being killed

Ch.14
The people are complaining...again! They want to return to Egypt! *facepalm*
😅 Felt the same
Joshua and Caleb try to convince the people that the land is good and that they need not fear the people there, for the Lord is with the people. But, the people wouldn't hear it. The Lord became angry. Moses intercedes for the people. God pardons them (vs.20). But, God is also just, thus He says that the people will not see the promised land. Only Joshua and Caleb will see it. Gods tells they people they will have to wander in the wilderness for 40 years. Only their little ones and Joshua and Caleb will make itto see the promised land. As for the spies that delivered the evil report about the land, God killed them with a plague.
The people set out to take on the people of the land. Moses warns them that God is not with them and that they will fall by the sword. They don't listen and go anyway. And sure enough, the people that were in the land smote them.
I have to go back and review. Don't remember Moses telling them not to go. I thought God was saying it was destined to happen.
Ch.15

Ch.16
Korah and his followers rebel against Moses and Aaron.
"When Moses heard of the dangerous unbelief of Israel, he and Aaron fell on their faces before God. At the dangerous rebellion of Korah, Moses once again fell on his face in a humble posture of prayer."
"Dathan and Abiram are co-conspirators with Korah. They would not meet with Moses, nor answer his challenge. Instead, they accused Moses of wanting to kill the people of God.
I completely missed this part. You mind sharing what verse?
After the words of Dathan and Abiram, Moses was very angry. He knew he had done nothing to deserve their accusations. Moses did the right thing. Moses left the situation to God.
Moses allowed the rebels to take the position they desired – the position of priest. Sometimes the best judgment on the divisive and rebellious is to let them lead. Moses and Aaron stood against more than 250.
The glory of the Lord appeared unto all the congregation. And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.
Once again, Moses and Aaron humbled themselves before God. With great love, they asked God to spare all the congregation.
It was said Moses was the meekest man in all the land. I agree very humble. Thankful to Moses for continuing God's mercy🙏
God warns that the people need to get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.
And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
The ground opened under them and swallowed them up. They went alive down into the realm of the dead.
Was there a verse that mentioned "realm of the dead"?
This was God’s judgment upon Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and their families.
The next day the people murmured against Moses and Aaron, "Ye have killed the people of the Lord."
The Lord tells Moses to get away from the congregation that he may consume them.
Moses tells Aaron to take incense and make atonement for the people, as a plague had begun among the people for their murmuring. The plague was stayed. They that died in the plague were 14,700.
Ch.17

Ch.18

Ch.19
Ordinance of the red heifer.
Heifer is a young female cow that hasn't given birth.
Instructions/laws given for having touched a dead person and being unclean.

Ch. 20
The people came into the desert of Zin and dwelt in Kadesh. Miriam died there and was buried.
No water could be found, so what do the people do? They murmur. That seems to be their biggest talent.
😂
Moses and Aaron go to the tabernacle and fall on their faces. The Lord tells Moses to take his rod and bring forth water from a rock to water the people and their flocks. Moses gathers the people, lifts his hands, and strikes the rock twice. Water came out abundantly.
The Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
"Moses’ sinful attitude and action were rooted in unbelief. He didn’t really believe God when the LORD told him to speak to the rock and not to strike it."
I didn't get this part because Moses had done this sign before. Why would we have doubted God? I did not see a verse stating Moses doubted God. I need to go back and review.
As a result, the Lord told Moses and Aaron that wouldn't be allowed to enter into the promised land.
Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom, to ask him to let the people pass through his land. He would not allow them to pass through, he said he'd come out with a sword against them if they pass through. So the people turned from there and went to mount Hor.
Aaron is taken up to mount Hor. His garments are given to his son Eleazar. Aaron died on mount Hor, the people mourned 30 days.
From what I read I thought it was only Aaron that doubted God between Moses and Aaron that is why God had him die. I also needed to review where Aaron showed doubt in God because I didn't remember a specific verse stating he doubted God other than God stating it and his punishment.
Ch.21

Ch.22

Ch.23
This is a very comical chapter. Balaam tells Balak to build him 7 alters and prepare offerings, which he does. And Balak and Balaam offered up a bull and a ram on each altar.
The Lord puts words into Balaam's mouth and instead of cursing Israel, he blesses Israel. Balak says, What?! I brought you here to curse my enemies, not bless them! Grrrr
😅
So Balak takes Balaam to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar. The Lord puts words in Balaam's mouth again and again he didn't curse Israel.
So Balak took Balaam to another place (hasn't this guy learned yet?), this time he takes him to the top or Peor. Again, Balaam has Balak build him 7 alters and prepare offerings.
Yes, after the second time I was like this guy😅
I will have supper shortly and I will read your posts from earlier. Thank you for your responses!
My pleasure!😀
Hoping you are well and safe this evening.
I'm getting better, hope to get caught up today🙏 Hope you're doing well yourself😀

I'm not entirely sure, but maybe Rooker gets it from Exodus 32:15.
15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
Interesting, thanks!
"Now, a redemption, or, exchange was going to take place. The Levites would now replace the firstborn sons as “God’s own” and would be put to work caring for the house of the Lord (tabernacle). However, there was a problem. There are 273 more Israelite firstborns than there are Levite males to substitute for them. Therefore, God required a payment of 5 shekels for each of the 273 extra firstborns. This money was paid to Aaron and the priests for the ministry of the Lord and the glorification of His work." (source: livinghopemc)
I'm not sure that answers the question any better
It's a very clear explanation of what happened, it's much appreciated!
Rather, "wash them off into the bitter water," in order to transfer the venom of the curses to the water.
Blot them out with the bitter water - In order to transfer the curses to the water. The action was symbolic.
Interesting, thanks!
Forgive me if I missed anything... 'cause I probably did. Feel free to point out what I missed.
I appreciate any input, thank you🙏
It's 6am in the center of the country.
Hoping you feel much better today! 🙏

Bade is the past tense of bid. Bid means wish. They wished to stone them (Joshua and Caleb) with stones.
Is that what you meant?
Exactly what I meant, thank you😀
Exodus 34:6-7
6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
and
Exodus 20:5
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.
Clearly this is why we need to read the Bible daily😅 Thank you!
Yes, I took it as the wicked men were the men in vs. 2. He wanted the rest of the people get step away from them so they would not be harmed.

I don't know if this helps any...
"Just as with the priests, this was a trade-off. The Levites did not have the best of both worlds; they did not have a personal inheritance of land as the other tribes did.
Those who are supported through the giving of God’s people should expect that they would not have the best of both worlds; they will not be wealthy in this life, though if possible, they should be comfortable. It is wrong for the congregation to keep the pastor “humble” through poverty, and just as wrong for the pastor to use the gifts of God’s people to live above God’s people."
This is a great note, thanks😀
Here's an interesting article...
"According to Jewish interpretation of the Old Testament Law, burial had to occur within 24 hours (Deut. 21:23). This was partly due to the climate in Israel, and partly because the body was considered to be ceremonially unclean and therefore had to be prepared for burial as soon as possible.
Shortly after death, family members came to mourn and prepare the body." source: https://www.thattheworldmayknow.com/burial-practices

"If only we had died when our brethren died before the Lord: Their contention led them to make outrageous statements, and they spoke as those who have no trust in God. The older generation of unbelief was almost dead, and now the younger generation started to act like the unbelieving generation. They openly doubted God’s promise that He would lead them into the land of promise."

"Unbelief has many forms. It was easy to see Israel’s unbelief in Numbers 14 when they refused to trust God and enter Canaan. Here, Moses was also unbelieving, but in different circumstances. Moses did not trust God to correct His people, so he took it upon himself to do so at a time when God did not want to correct Israel. Moses acted more like an Egyptian prince than a servant of the LORD."
Definitely need to go back and review this, thank you😀
Not in my personal belief. People (including Moses) are different than angels.

There should be more on the topic of vows coming up very soon.

Unfortunately, it is a book that is lost to us in the current time.
How did you come to this conclusion?
Some suggest that Jethro, Zipporah’s father, was actually from Ethiopia but had moved to Midian, making Zipporah an Ethiopian by birth but one who had lived in Midian. We aren't entirely sure of this though. Sometimes, assumptions have to be made.
Thanks for clarifying! Where did the speculation come from that Jethro was Ethiopian? I just realized that Jethro is Reuel, have to review his origin of lineage. Wasn't he of Isreal? I could be way off here, I need to go back and review
The more you look into Balaam, the more you find that he really isn't a good guy. He isn't mentioned much more after this part of the Bible, but we will run into him again. I guess I'll refrain from saying more for right now, I'll leave it until we briefly run into him again.
Thank you for no spoilers🙏
Yes, only the donkey sees the angel until the Lord allows Balaam to see the angel.

To be continued....

A general name of the kings of the Amalekites; apparently like Pharaoh for the Egyptian kings. (source: ATS Bible Dictionary)
Thank you, great to know!
"...he also shall perish—that is, the conqueror of Asher and Eber, namely, the Greek and Roman empires." (source: Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary)
Interesting, thank you!
Whilst the heads of the people were deliberating on the subject, and the whole congregation was assembled before the tabernacle, weeping on account of the divine wrath, there came an Israelite, a prince of the tribe of Simeon, who brought a Midianitish woman, the daughter of a Midianitish chief (Numbers 25:14), to his brethren, i.e., into the camp of the Israelites, before the eyes of Moses and all the congregation, to commit adultery with her in his tent. This shameless wickedness, in which the depth of the corruption that had penetrated into the congregation came to light, inflamed the zeal of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the high priest, to such an extent, that he seized a spear, and rushing into the tent of the adulterer, pierced both of them through in the very act. (source: Keil and Delitzsch OT Commentary)
Interesting thank you! How come this has added words from the original text?
Also, it's been speculated that Balaam persuaded the Midianites to seduce the Israelites into intermarriage with them in order to provoke Jehovah’s anger.
How did they come to this conclusion with what has been read thus far? Is it from what still needs to be read that supports this claim?
Hoping your Monday finds you feeling better! Hopefully, your week will be off to a smashing start!
You're awesome thank you! Hope you're having a great week thus far😀
