We don't become little children. We come to God AS little children.
Little children implicitly trust those who care for them. God desires that we come to Him placing our trust in Him...in faith.

Little children have great faith. Little children trust their moms and dads no matter what. Even when they don't understand or agree with it they trust their mom and dad. Little kids always love their parents.

When a child asks their parents for something, they do not thank the purse it came from (the universe). They thank the parent.

Little children have hope for the future, but live in the present.

Little children are creators, constantly playing to learn.

The little children are a reference to their unblemished spirits; innocence, joy, curiosity, willingness to understand and learn, embracing what is good and all these wonderful qualities young children have. Jesus was saying we should strive to be like them.

How do we become a little children?

This is speaking of being reborn. Born anew at the time of our salvation. The old man is changed into a newborn Christian. And, as with all newborns, we need to grow and learn in this new life God has given us. We must learn to not lean on our old understanding, but to trust in the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, and educate us on this new path we have chosen.

The Apostle Paul showed this when he spoke of new believers not being able to feast on the meat of Gods Word, but had to be fed with milk and honey. In growing, and maturing in our Christian walk, we become more mature and with the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, we become sanctified Christians able to feast on the meat of Gods Word.

The 12 before this were talking about who would be the greatest. So if we break down some of those words its to be converted, to repent. This meant that the 12 were to conduct themselves as children of God so like Christ they should be able to call upon God as Abba Father. Now I think we all know children can believe anything.

Side note: An old, but unreliable, tradition claims that Ignatius of Antioch was that Child.

Contrasting this with what Jesus' comment to Nicodemus about being a "master of Israel," I believe this is related to our thinking beyond, metanoia, which is generally translated as repentance. It is coming to the realization that you are not the greatest among men but the least in regard to the eternal, you are but a vapor, as significant as a little fart. However, also realize you are not without value in the heart of the eternal King of Heaven, as His child.

I thank God that I still have the same Faith I did as a child when I first believed in Jesus. Yes, my Faith has increased but that belief I had in Jesus is just as strong as it is today. I've been to university and studied science, philosophy, sociology, and principles all about "reasoning." And when doubt tries to enter in and my mind desires to reason whether God is this or that. It's that child like Faith that steps in and removes it. I couldn't have asked for a better Gift from God. A belief in Him that is unwavering.

In our times today, what is the equivalent of John The Baptist Baptism (Water into Repentance) and the Baptism of Jesus Christ (with the Holy Ghost and with Fire)?

These two Baptisms will save us from facing the Damnation in Hell
