John the Baptist

“For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11:13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭16:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

johns birth

“And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. …But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭1:11-15‬ ‭

“And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

….And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people By the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; Whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭1:63-64, 66-67, 70-80‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

As it is written in the prophets, ( Malachi 3:1) Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Which shall prepare thy way before thee.

( Isaiah 40:3) The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; ( Elijah the tishbite 2kings 1:8, Malachi 4 5-6 Matt.11:13-15, mrk9:12-13, Matt 17:11-13) and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

and preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. ( he’s preaching Jesus to them already and telling them Jesus would give them the Holy Ghost when he came same message Jesus and his apostles preached only beforehand and not after )

And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: and there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:1-11, 14-15‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭24:14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:15-16, 20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls……… And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:37-41, 47‬ ‭KJV‬‬

we should be careful not to let anyone change things God established for us to believe and act upon such as baptism.

preach the word; ( what’s already there ) be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4:2-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”
‭‭John‬ ‭18:37‬ ‭

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭5:24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:3, 5‬ ‭

baptism for remission of sins is for those who believe this

“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

baptism is about being included in that death for our sins and is important according to the writings of Paul , Peter , John , Matthew , Luke . is basic doctrine according to Hebrews and mark in the end we should ask ourselves if Jesus said to get baptized in his name and be saved because I believe the gospel . Should I believe what he said and sent to everyone in creation ? Or should I consider this a man made ritual ?

John's baptism was strictly to bring Israel to repentance in anticipation of their Messiah. Christian baptism is for those who have repented and believed on the Lord Jesus Christ. We need to be very clear about these two baptisms and how they differ. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. (Mark 1:4,5)

The religious leaders of Israel failed to repent and be baptized by John. Instead they became enemies of Christ. And Christ severely pronounced woes upon them.

look brother simply follow the progression

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Which shall prepare thy way before thee.( Malachi 3:1)

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:1-2, 4, 8‬ ‭

Now john gets put in prison and jesus begins telling them who were all baptized for remission of sins

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

remember now they had all flocked to John to get baptized in water jesus is saying just what John said he spoke of water and spirit also

Here’s the thing brother what John and jesus were talking about

“and, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭1:4-5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

a few days later is is now fulfilled Jesus has baptized them with the Holy Ghost now watch after they receive the Holy Ghost the first thing Peter offers is baptism for remission of sins and a promise of the Holy Ghost just like John was saying ……

“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

……Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, (baptism of repentance for remission of sins )

and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. ( promise of receiving the Holy Ghost ) For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:2-4, 37-41‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The only difference is John said this before Jesus came forth

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

Jesus said this next in the progression

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

then after he rose he said this

wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.”

then it’s fulfilled but Peter is still calling for repentence and baptism for remission of sins just like John john also preached faith in Christ it only sounds different because he was preaching before Jesus died and rose and the others were preaching after

“and preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:7-8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease.

He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:28-36‬ ‭KJV‬‬

You see John preached faith in Christ also and baptized just like Peter did for repentance and remission of sins . Just like Jesus calls for from all people when he sends the gospel to them and says believe and get baptized and be saved there’s nothing in the Bible that ever changed baptisms function it’s before the cross and after for remission of sins it’s something believers in Jesus do

Amen !!

“Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.”
‭‭John‬ ‭7:16-17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:51‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.”
‭‭John‬ ‭12:49-50‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;

but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:15-16‬ ‭

“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:26-29‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28:18-20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭10:47-48‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Paul’s testimony of his own conversion and baptism

“And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there, came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him. And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth. And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭22:12-14, 16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

what Paul did that day hearing this witness he’s speaking here

“And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭9:18, 20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭22:16‬ ‭

what would believers do ?

You see John preached faith in Christ also and baptized just like Peter did for repentance and remission of sins .
We need to be very clear regarding this critical matter. Repentance is for the remission of sins. Baptism confirms this. Repentance is internal, while baptism is external. Water does NOT wash away sins. It is the blood of Christ that does so. And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, (Rev 1:5)

So it is erroneous to claim that baptism is for the remission of sins. And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (Luke 24:47). Those are the words of Christ Himself and He is careful not to include the word "baptism".

We need to be very clear regarding this critical matter. Repentance is for the remission of sins. Baptism confirms this. Repentance is internal, while baptism is external. I very much agree this is a critical matter, most critical. I believe since it's so critical Satan is doing his best to confuse us.

These are also the words of Jesus Himself Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
It's my understanding that being added to Christ is how we gain access to the blood that forgives our sins. God has given us several conversions so we can see what people were taught and did to be added to Christ.

Yes, repentance for the forgiveness of sins did begin at Jerusalem on Pentecost. Peter said Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

It's my understanding it takes both repentance and baptism for the believe to be added to Christ in order to receive the Holy Spirit.

Of all those who heard the gospel on Pentecost, notice which ones were added to Christ.
Acts 2:41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

I would hope so yes

But those passages say we were baptised INTO CHRIST, INTO HIS DEATH, INTO HIS BODY, AND AGAIN INTO CHRIST.

it had nothing to do with water or being baptized in water in jesus name..

I disagree that it has nothing to do with water. It has everything to do with being baptized in the name of Jesus.

Yes, those passages say we're baptized into Christ. On the day of Pentecost, of all those who heard the gospel, which ones were added to Christ?
Acts 2:41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

When the bible says we were baptized INTO CHRIST. it means just that, we were placed into Christ

to add water to the passage is to add to the word of God

yes. but these people were already baptized into Christ BEFORE they were baptized into water.

which is how it must be..

When the bible says we were baptized INTO CHRIST. it means just that, we were placed into Christ

to add water to the passage is to add to the word of God
This is incorrect. To be baptized into Christ is to be baptized in the name of Jesus, which is water.

yes. but these people were already baptized into Christ BEFORE they were baptized into water..
I suggest you're reading into this passage what you want to see. ONLY those who were baptized (in the name of Jesus) were added.

Which of these is true?

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

This is incorrect.

to be baptised in water is to be baptised in water

to be baptized in christ is to be baptized in christ.

its no different than the children of Israel being baptized into moses..

Actually, you are still wrong.. Only those who recieved the gift of the spirit and remission of sin were added to the church.

this is accomplished by GOD baptizing us into Christ, and his death, where our sins are redeemed by the blood.

then on account of having receive remission of sin, they were baptized in water.

John 3: 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 3: 34 For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. 35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. 36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Notice. not one mention of baptism..

if your going to use mark 16, you have to make mark 16 and john 3 agree.. they must not contradict

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; ( Elijah the tishbite 2kings 1:8, Malachi 4 5-6 Matt.11:13-15, mrk9:12-13, Matt 17:11-13) and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

and preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;

I assume that you are talking about water baptism. It is not a man made ritual, however, neither is it essential to forgiveness of sins. We get baptised because we are forgiven. Baptism signifies death to world, an important step in progress in the Christian life.

Suppose a believer dies before he is baptised? Some Australians on death row were saved in an Indonesian prison. The authorities refused permission for them to be baptised before they were executed. Are they in hell? No way. How about the ignorant? I knew nothing of baptism for months after I was born again. I know that I was forgiven and accepted by God as His child (John 1:12).

The idea of baptisimal regeneration is a fine example of how not to interpret scripture. It takes a few verses out of context and makes a false doctrine out of them. Believers should be baptised, but that does not mean that they must. We are still saved by God's grace, not by what we do.

to add water to the passage is to add to the word of God
absolutely wrong.

Baptism was ALWAYS about water baptism. Jesus added the spiritual immersion to the water immersion. This is evidenced by all the examples given after Jesus' resurrection that show water baptism as essential.
When the people of Jesus time were talking baptism, they knew and understood that it was immersion in water. That's the only definition there WAS of it, except for the act of pickling something.

If a person was told to be baptized, they looked for water.... period.

The spiritual aspect was added to the physical aspect by Jesus' sacrifice.
