DO YOU BELIEVE IN SPEAKING IN TONG'S FOR TODAY ? AND IF NOT WHY ?
Of course … In addition to the other 8 manifestation of the spirit (not gifts).

I have been speaking in tongues for over 40 years …

I was barely a Christian when I spoke in tongues …I had never heard it done... and never even heard of it. So I had no preconceived thought or idea of what it was about.

Long story short…but, I was ready to end it with a 38 special … the night someone threw a book at me saying “I needed it more than they did”…. The book was Power in Praise (I think) and for some reason I started reading in the middle of it, or an area that talked about if you accept Jesus as your lord and savior, God will give you a heavenly language …. Just thank Him for it and start speaking ….

So I did …and He did …..I was absolutely blown away! …I probably started and stopped a hundred times before I went out at 1:00 in the morning …found some people I knew…. and they spoke in tongues also.

The benefits (at least 12) of tongues are phenomenal and I do it all the time (to myself) everyday… with the exception of our fellowship meetings where I speak in tongues and interpret.

Tongues "Of Men" and "Interpretation" as I read about it in Acts, looks to me to be a "Sign" to the early Jewish Christians, that Gentile Christians could be Filled with the Holy Spirit and Saved, therefore be Baptized. So it would be logical to me that it would cease as the Early Church became Gentile and Jews were Partially Blinded till "Time Of The Gentiles Is Full". It seems logical to me that the Early Jewish Christians were "Unlearned Men". So I guess they needed help. The Church over the last 2000 years has Matured and become "Learned". Translating Scripture and learning every language there is. So it would make sense to me if it stopped.

"Tongues of Angels"? No reason for it to stop. If a person has that Gift then no one else would know because its private.

No. I actually believe all of the Holy Spirit gifts ceased during the apostolic age. This isn't to say that miracles like healings and prophecy and speaking in tongues doesn't ever happen. It clearly does. But this modern day version of speaking in tongues is not only not of God but the very definition of the act has been completely butchered.

There's been a thousand books written on this and I'm not about to engage in arguments. I'm just going to refrain from needing some preacher spout off gobble gook as evidence of the Holy Spirit. Faith needs no evidence.

As for me, super absolutely positively.......YES
1 Cor 14:2 'or anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit'.

Benefits of Speaking in Tongues

The primary purpose of tongues is designed for the individual believer in his/her private prayer life.

It edifies the believers and is a sign → when in a group meeting and the person speaking, also interprets.

1.
To speak the wonderful works of God

Act 2:11
Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

2. To magnify God

Act 10:46
For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

3. To give thanks well

1Co 14:17
For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

4. To bring a message from God {when interpreted}

1Co 14:5& 27

5) except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

27) If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let that one interpret.

5.
Sign to the unbelievers

1Co 14:22, Mar 16:17

1Co 14
22) Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

Mar 16
17) And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

6. To edify you, build you up.

1Co 14:4, Jude 20

1Co 14:4

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

Jde 20
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the holy spirit.

7. To speak to God mysteries {divine secrets}

1Co 14:2
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

8. Makes intercession for us
Rom 8:26&27, Eph 6:18

Rom
26: Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Rom
27: And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God

Eph 6:18
18. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

9. Your proof in the senses world that you are born again.

1Co 12:3
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the holy spirit.

10. To have the spirit bear witness with our spirit – Similar to #9

Rom 8:16

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

11. To know you are a joint-heir with Christ.

Rom 8:17

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

12. To strengthen you with might in the inner man

Eph 3:16

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his spirit in the inner man;

Hmm...seems to me that "faith" without evidence is not faith it is delusion.

YES

Though its rare to meet other christians that do so however God hears when I speak with Him, and does not mind.

I know that some people believe Christians should not speak at all, in any tongue, especially women and we are to remain silent at all times.

I believe God can cause anyone He wants to speak in unknown languages, yes. But what passes for tongues these days isn't the Biblical gift of languages, it's a cheap imitation known as ecstatic utterances; and no, it's not from God.

I believe in the gift, but I do not believe it is for every Christian, nor is it required to be. A good friend had Spanish-only speaking people understand him when he spoke in English at a jail Bible study which is one manifestation. Their interpreter stopped interpretting as he too heard in Spanish. This only happened once.

You sound like you feel very strongly about it, the most relevant being that you "believe all of the Holy Spirit gifts ceased during the apostolic age". What does this mean? What's the "Apostolic Age"? Why do you believe it ended and all spiritual gifts ended?

I just go by the basics... speaking in tongues happened in Acts and in the churches afterward. Pual emphasized that the speaking in tongues that only God understands should be done in private for the reason it doesn't edify the church members present, and that unbelievers visiting will likely think the 'not-understood-speaking' person is out of their mind.

I'm just aware of what's in the bible, so I'm at a loss regarding what you're saying. I don't have a position on what you said, I'm just asking if you can tell me What's the "Apostolic Age"? Why do you believe it and all spiritual gifts ended?

No. I believe that the gift of tongues ceased in the first century. As already mentioned, what passes as tongues today is just jibberish.

And no, I am not going to debate it.

A more pertinent question is this "Did anyone said to be 'filled with the Holy Spirit' in Scripture speak in tongues -- other than on the day of Pentecost?"
