Visible planets (evening, April 2023)

Venus, the brightest planet, dominates the western sky after sunset each night.
In fact, Venus will continue to dazzle you for months. And it will be very close to
the delicate Pleiades star cluster on April 10 and 11. Don’t miss the waxing crescent
moon near Venus on April 23. By month’s end Venus will set over three hours after sunset.

Mars is high in the evening sky, noticeably red in color but fading in brightness, setting a
few hours after midnight. By month’s end, Mars will blend in with the other 1st-magnitude
stars, as it shrinks and fades after its recent opposition on December 8, 2022, when Earth
flew between Mars and the sun. Now Earth is fleeing ahead of Mars in our smaller, faster
orbit around the sun. And as a result, Mars is fading day by day. The moon will sweep past
Mars on April 26. By month’s end, Mars will set over an hour after midnight.

Mercury returns to the evening sky in its best evening apparition of 2023 for the Northern
Hemisphere. Start looking for it about 30 minutes after sunset. At greatest elongation it
sets over an hour after sunset. It’ll disappear from the evening sky after mid-month.

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
