Unlike opossums, racoons can carry rabies and pass it on before they manifest the symptoms, so I've been told. If you want to get one you know is clean, check exotic animal breeders and wildlife rescues/rehabs. You might run across newly weened captive bred babies for sale. State laws vary on wildlife sales, but there are auctions and breeders of most everything these days.

I had pet raccoons as a child :D I looked after two of them for four years :)
