A friend shared this with me and I'm concerned that a lot of people will suffer power outages. At this point it's hard to say what and where the weather will be worst. I heard everything from below zero to possibly 70mph winds! Trees bring down power lines and furnaces only function with electric. Let's pray for God to stop the Arctic weather from going anywhere but back where it won't harm anyone.

We have had very cold weather here for the last few days, with a huge snowfall starting Sunday, with the worst of it yesterday.

I do not recall it ever getting down to -11 Celsius here before, but it surely has

I just looked it up now and it is not as rare as I'd thought :geek: Just last year: December 27, 2021: -16 C  (4 F)

December 20, 2008: -15 C (5 F); January 06, 1993, December 29, 1990, and November 27, 1985: -14 C (6 F)

Going back to the year 1900, the coldest ever was December 29, 1968: -18 C (0 F) source

When God gives you lemons, make lemonade. When God gives you snow, make snow angels.

I saw people making snow angels the other day and it occurred to me
that I will not be laying down in the snow to do any such thing

Point taken. Go sledding instead.
It was very sunny here today even @ -11 C and I should have gone out and scraped the snow and ice off my car, but...

Nope! I did no such thing. Tomorrow I work, and will have to do it then :D

Where I was born and raised, minus 20 was not unusual winter weather, with lots and lots of snow :)

That's not unusual for down here for a few days to a week, But later in the winter. The wind and possibility of 2 feet of snow with the storm is a serious combination. Did you get much wind?

My motto too: never do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

I was thinking about posting in that "What unnecessarily complicates life?" thread, with my answer being "procrastination." ;):D
I see it as very forward thinking. If the Lord returns, it didn't need to be done.

It was bitter cold walking from my car to my building when I was coming home
from work Monday @ 3:30 PM :geek: I am not sure what the wind chill factor was...

Even as cold as it is, I still have a window open...

I normally have two open, but closed one :)

It's only -9 C now!

The computer generated 500 millibar (mb) atmospheric model charts feature a line known as the 540 line. While not 100% accurate, it's used as a rule of thumb for freezing precipitation forecasting. Snow is typically not forecasted to occur south of the 540. When the distance between the 540 mb line and the surface is less than or equal to 5,400 meters, it means the air temperate is below freezing, thus snow is possible as long as there isn't a warmer layer below.

With this information in mind, you can look at these charts at NOAA to begin testing your DIY snow forecasts.

https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/medr/medr500.shtml

If these are accurate then there won't be a blizzard, at least south of North Dakota, through Christmas.

Polar vortexes worse than this have hit. It seems Texas is where people get the worst of it. The power companies don't seem to prepare adequately in Texas. At least that is the impression the news gives. Then they really try and soak the people for their own poor planning is what it sounds like.

The weather forecast on this side of PA said -40°F below is expected with strong sustained winds. That's Fahrenheit and I didn't hear if actual or wind chill. Either way, that's south pole weather. Wow!

Read what I said to Magenta. Tree limbs in this wooded zone knock down dozens of power lines and it's like someone spending days in a big chest freezer. Texas had several big issues, but never get what happened last year. The people were victims of the system.
