Not super surprising news. There have been gay comic book heroes for some time now. It's just been that up till more recent times their homosexuality was ignored by writers. And now it's being highlighted.
And turning a previously hetero character gay isn't new, either. This was heavily pushed in Sesame Street years ago with Burt and Ernie.
In fact not much new stuff is released, now they simply remake old stories and add change characters female, gay or black. Ghostbusters for example, changing to an all female version. Or Thor changing to a female version. Or even Thor adding a using a black character in the mythology of an all white country/race.
The Flash TV show highlighted multiple gay relationships. And that also meant the Supergirl show (connected to The Flash show) was also supporting those relationships.
So none of this is really new or surprising. It's been going on for years now.
Note I'm neither sexist nor racist, but merely highlighting the way culture has changed to promote and pacify certain views.
